It appears the show has a good-sized crowd.
Drew Gulak and Timothy Thatcher both came out to good reaction for the opening match. Gulak asked for the mic and said wrestlers like him, Thatcher, and Busick were trying to bring wrestling back to the front and center of the picture. He talked about how wrestling had lost its integrity. He said winning is the only thing that matters in wrestling and he hopes the locker room and his peers hear him. He said if fans can feel a performance in the ring, it becomes real to them.

Thatcher got an ankle lock once again. Gulak got to his feet and teased a Fujiwara arm bar, but ended up grabbing an ankle lock. Thatcher fired right back and went for a kimura, but Gulak ended up locking him in a crucifix pin for the win. Leonard noted that Gulak was now 4-0 against Thatcher.
WINNER: Drew Gulak.
Star rating: (***1/2) – This was another very good technical wrestling match between these two. I like that they’re moving towards a story where Gulak has Thatcher’s number, as he moved to 4-0 against him with this victory. It’s a lot of fun watching these two go hold for hold on the mat, but if they wrestle again in the future, I’m hoping the matches become more personal in nature. Thatcher needs to show more fire to get his 0-4 record against Gulak over.
(2) Tommy End vs. Biff Busick. Leonard mentioned that End had been endorsed by Chris Hero. He also mentioned that End was a hot commodity in Europe with a reputation for being a devastating striker. Leonard then discussed that End had been kickboxing since he was 9-years-old. End managed to slip out of a rear naked choke attempt from Busick. They went back and forth and End obliterated Busick with a kick to the chest. He then nailed him with a huge forearm and the fans gasped. Busick ducked a running knee and hit his Judo throw into a rear naked choke combination. End tried to roll over and escape, but Busick held on and the ref called for the bell when End passed out.
Post-match, Busick got on the mic and called out Hero. He said the man he had endorsed had gotten choked out. Busick said the same thing would happen to Hero tomorrow. Busick said Hero fears the choke, but more importantly he fears Biff Busick. Busick then left the ring. End got a big ovation from the fans after he recovered.
WINNER: Biff Busick.
Star rating: (***) – This was a good match. End’s strikes are unbelievable to the point that I couldn’t believe Busick absorbed a roundhouse kick to the head and then finished off End a short time later to end the match. I think the story of the match would have been more interesting if they had hammered home that Busick would be sending a message to Hero by beating End, who he endorsed to come into EVOLVE.
Ethan Page came out and cut a promo. He said the fans were probably wondering why the new grabbed the mic. Page said he wanted to thank Johnny Gargano for endorsing him. The fans applauded. Page said he had watched Gargano make this company and had learned so much from what he had done in the WWN Live universe. He said he hoped he made Gargano proud this weekend. Chris Hero was out next to a mixed reaction from the sounds of things, but then the fans broke out into a big Hero chant as he went around the ring bumping elbows with the fans at ringside. The announcers mentioned that Thatcher was watching from the stage.
WINNER: Chris Hero.
Star rating: (**) – It was hard to get into this match. Hero didn’t come off like a heel at all here and the fans cheered him most of the match. Hero took a lot of the offense and it didn’t seem like Page had a shot to win the match at any point during the contest. Page has shown he has a lot of potential, so this was disappointing the way the match came off.
The Premier Athlete Brand came out and Cage got a good response. Rich Swann then came out singing “All Night Long” with A.R. Fox and Uhaa Nation. The fans began clapping as Fox was singing the entire song. Uhaa and Fox danced behind Swann as he sang down the entrance way. The fans stood up and clapped as Swann made his way around the ring singing the song. Swann then had the fans sing the chorus. This is awesome. Swann danced with Nation and Swann. They tried to get Andrea to dance, but she wasn’t having it. Fox, Swann, and Uhaa then danced together to close their entrance and the fans stood and applauded. Ricochet teased leaving, but then came back smiling.
(4) The Premier Athlete Brand (Caleb Konley & Brian Cage & T.J. Perkins w/So Cal Val & Andrea) vs. Ricochet & Rich Swann & Uhaa Nation. Swann hit a 450 off the second rope on Konley. Nation then hit the Uhaa combination on Konley for the win.
Andrea nailed Nation and Swann with a double low blow as they celebrated their win. Konley ended up hitting Swann with the Open The United Gate belt. The fans booed a little bit as the PAB stood tall in the ring after the match. Val berated Perkins after the match and told him he screwed everything up. Perkins put his hand in Val’s face and walked away.
WINNERS: Rich Swann & Uhaa Nation & Ricochet.
Star rating: (***1/4) – The match started out a bit slowly and there wasn’t a lot of heat until things picked up. There was some spectacular fast-paced action during the second half of the match, but the fans seemed apathetic to the PAB here. The post-match activity was a head scratcher, as Perkins seemingly left the PAB after just joining them when he got sick of Val getting in his face after the match.

The fans started a half-hearted chant for both men.

He said he hopes Galloway wins because he will be the man left standing to lead the company into the future. The fans applauded as Gargano left the ring.
WINNER: Johnny Gargano to retain the Open the Freedom Gate Championship
Star rating: (***1/4) – The first half of the match really dragged with a long heat segment on Fox that the crowd was dead for. If they had cut a portion of the match out, this would have been excellent. Things then really picked up shortly after Fox mounted his comeback and they had some great exchanges down the stretch, including an insane dive through the ropes by Gargano on Fox that sent both men through the guardrail. They built to some good near falls down the stretch before Gargano put Fox away in spectacular fashion.

He said EVOLVE never disappoints to close the show.
Winner: Drew Galloway to retain the EVOLVE Championship
Star rating: (***) – The match was solid, but the crowd just didn’t invest in the action. They had some good intense exchanges, but the match didn’t seem to build to a crescendo before Galloway finished off Black when they were heading towards the next gear. The post-match mic work from Gargano and Galloway was outstanding and did a great job of setting the stage for their title vs. title match on Saturday.
Quick overall thoughts: (6.0) - There were a number of good matches on the show, but something seemed to be missing from them to take things to the next level. The lack of heated rivals clashing on the show seemed to be a factor for a lack of response to parts of the matches on this card from the crowd, as the wrestlers had to work awfully hard to get the crowd into things at times.
One example of this would be Hero’s mannerisms during his match with Page. Hero is a heel, but he wrestled and acted like a babyface during his match with Page and then transitioned to a heel for his post-match segment with Busick.
Swann’s entrance with Nation and Ricochet with Swann singing “All Night Long” was fantastic. The Six-Man Tag was very good down the stretch after an ordinary start and ended up being one of the best matches on the card. The post-match activity with The PAB after they lost left me scratching my head, though. The gimmick hasn’t been enjoyable for the most part since it began and Perkins leaving the stable after one night due to So Cal Val berating him after the match overshadowed the hot finish.
The semi-main event and main event were both good matches, but not at the level you would expect. Gargano vs. Fox took a long time to get going, but once they kicked things into high gear down the stretch the fans got into the action. Galloway and Black also had a good match, but it wasn’t the type of blow-away main event needed to take the show to an overall higher level. The match featured some good action, but they didn’t tell a story the fans could invest in and simply went back and forth for most of the match until Galloway hit his finish out of nowhere when the match seemed to be just kicking into a higher gear.
The show closed on a high note with Galloway doing some really good mic work to set up his title vs. title match with Gargano on Saturday. They had a heated exchange on the mic and eventually began brawling, but were quickly separated. This was a great way to close the show and I can’t wait to see their match on Saturday.
This show gets a mild recommendation. There are a number of good matches on the card, but nothing was truly worth going out of your way to see. The show did do a good job of setting up the big matches for the rest of the weekend, especially Hero-Busick and Gargano vs. Galloway.
