New Japan G1 Climax Results
August 8, 2014
Kanagawa, Japan
Report by James Caldwell, PWTorch assistant editor

(1) Shelton Benjamin beat Honma. Sadly, no victory for Honma in the G1 tournament. Honma tried a top-rope version of his Santino-like falling headbutt, but Shelton moved, then hit Paydirt for the win.

(2) Yujiro Takahashi beat Toru Yano. Bullet Club's bad-boy came prepared with an athletic cup to block Yano's trademark low-blow before scoring the win.

(3) Lance Archer beat Hirooki Goto in a hard-hitting, physical match. Very good match that concluded with Archer hitting his crucifix powerbomb finisher for the win.

(4) Karl Anderson beat Naito with the Stun Gun. Definitely not Naito's year after winning G1 last year.

(5) Tomohiro Ishii beat Yuji Nagata. Another very physical match. Both men sold injuries, but Ishii fought through shoulder pain to win with a big brainbuster.

[Intermission]

(6) Doc Gallows beat Shibata. Surprising result that stunned the crowd, ending Shibata's quest to get into one of the top two spots in the A Block.

(7) Shinsuke Nakamura beat Bad Luck Fale. Nakamura needed two Boma Ye running knee strikes to Fale's head to get the three count. Very good big man vs. top star match with numerous counters and reversals. Nakamura is on fire right now.

(8) A.J. Styles beat Togi Makabe. Very nice finish with Makabe trying a top-rope move, but Styles hit the Pele Kick and Makabe ducked down right into position to take a Super Styles Clash. Nice match.

(9) Davey Boy Smith, Jr. beat Tanahashi. Another very good match. It seemed to be the deal where Smith posed a serious threat to Tanahashi, who would eventually make the comeback and win, but Smith nailed a sit-out powerbomb to win moments after wearing down Tanahashi with an impressive Tiger Suplex. Big night for TAKA, who managed N. American wrestlers Smith, Archer, and Benjamin to victories on the same show.

(10) Kazuchika Okada beat Minoru Suzuki. Okada wanted to prove his toughness against the hard-striking veteran Suzuki, who punched Okada right in the face late in the match, but Okada recovered and nailed the Rainmaker lariat for the pin and the win. Another really good match with the crowd invested all the way.

G1 Climax Finalists: Tanahashi and Nakamura from the A Block and Okada and Styles from the B Block. Upon further review, it's just the block winners against each other in the Finals, which means Nakamura vs. Okada in the finals and Styles vs. Tanahashi in a "third place match" on Sunday.
