KELLER'S TAKE: Seven changes WWE could make to spark Raw if ratings remain under 3.0 for several weeks

After tonight's show, it might be worth considering what moves WWE might make if they have a string of several Raw's that fail to reach the 3.0 rating mark. (Last week they sunk below 3.0, a rarity for the program on a non-holiday Monday.) Up against a competitive Chicago Bears vs. Green Bay Packers divisional rivalry game on ESPN with a pre-taped episode of Raw sandwiched between frustratingly close and overpriced off-brand PPVs, well, it wouldn't be a shock to see another sub-3.0 rating this week. If that happens, and keeps happening, what could WWE do? That question was asked on today's PWTorch Livecast. Here are some options:

-Bring Jim Ross back. Add some vitality to the announcing and that babyface leader speaking on behalf of the product that Raw is missing with this tweener role that Michael Cole is in. Plus Ross's voice is linked to Raw's best years. Plus he can enhance a solid storyline and elevate an emerging star with his unmatched commentary. If only Ross were available on payroll. Oh wait, he is.

-Move to Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Vince McMahon told me back when Nitro was kicking Raw's tail in the ratings that he would consider a move to another night if he felt it would help Raw. He wouldn't be happy about it, but he said he'd do it for the sake of the company and of course for the fans. In this case it wouldn't be moving away from Nitro, but rather moving away from Monday Night Football.

-Combine the rosters of Raw and Smackdown and make every show a Supershow. Of course, that feeling would wear off after a couple weeks if it meant anything to begin with, and then they'd be left with four hours of programming to fill each week utilizing the same roster twice a week, thus putting at risk further overexposure of the top acts and giving fans extra reason to skip Raw and just watch Smackdown instead to see John Cena, Randy Orton, Sheamus, and whoever else is considered a top star on the Raw roster.

-Change the show's stale format. WWE has Booking 101 down pretty well after these years, but it feels like McMahon can write these shows in his sleep. There's never a reason to offer a surprise just for the sake of a surprise if it doesn't make storyline sense, but that feeling of "anything can happen" seems to be missing. The Nexus angle was so well received because it felt like a break from the structure and format that has become too familiar. Finding a new formula and questioning all rules regarding the structure and pacing of the show might bring fans back to see something that feels new and less familiar.

-Introduce and push smaller, more athletically exciting talent. There's more excitement on one 30 second commercial for the Dragon Gate PPV than there is on a 125 minute episode of Raw. It may not be Vince McMahon's thing, but a lot of fans love the dazzling athleticism, especially when featured in a context that matters such as with a title at steak. Nitro beat Raw in great part because of the cruiserweights doing moves almost no U.S. fans had ever seen before. Ultimo Dragon, Jushin Liger, Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero, Psicosis, Juventud Guerrera, and that mix of fresh young exciting talent gave new energy to wrestling on Monday nights. Someone needs to tell McMahon that approach is worth trying and comes at a relatively cheap price.

-Acquire more wrestlers with name value. Get anyone from the free agent market possible and make plays for some TNA wrestlers when their deals expire. Kevin Nash, Mick Foley, Booker T, Buff Bagwell, Sting, Goldberg, Dallas Page... anyone with name recognition who can make cameos, guest appearances, or full-fledged all-out participate in a match. Heck, they could buy TNA and acquire all of their talent. Just stay away from anyone who has a chance of dying due to their lifestyles or is likely to fail a Wellness Test, of course. So there's at least one name to scratch off that list.

-Or... just bring Stephanie McMahon and Vince McMahon back as central characters on the TV show right after the election. Have the family feud become the centerpiece of Raw, with Stephanie revealed as the mystery G.M. and Vince fighting to control her power-hungry daughter with Triple H getting the benefit of every one of her decisions en route to trying to take over WWE from the Vince-backed babyface Randy Orton. This option could breath life into WWE and is the most likely to be tried, but I'd take all of the previous options over this one.
