We had an interesting conversation on Thursday's PWTorch Livecast on how WWE could shake up the WrestleMania 30 line-up, save face before WWE Network launches, and re-energize WrestleMania Season.
The shake-up centers on Daniel Bryan, Randy Orton, Batista, and the WWE World Title.
Step 1 is Bryan wins the WWE Title in the Elimination Chamber match. Step 2 is Bryan defeats Orton the next night on Raw to take care of Orton's title re-match. The set-up would be Orton is incensed and wants his title back now. Plus, The Authority can't stand the sight of Bryan as WWE champion even for one day. Bryan would then retain the WWE World Title in the Raw main event, setting up Bryan in jeopardy for six weeks leading to a clash with Batista at Mania.
The post-Chamber Raw is important for a number of reasons, including being the night that WWE launches the Network. Does WWE want people feeling down on the product, which a locked-in Orton vs. Batista title match at WM30 would create? Or, does WWE want back-to-back "feel good nights" when the Network launches?
Getting Orton's title re-match out of the way would avoid the triple threat scenario at Mania. It's not out of the realm of possibility, as Batista would easily slide into a tweener role, but WWE is not in the business of triple threat title matches in the Mania main event in this era.
Leading to WrestleMania, it sets up a scenario for The Authority to embrace Batista as their new hand-picked "Face of WWE," replacing Orton, who has frustrated The Authority for months and months. Hunter, in-character, went so far as to call Orton "like a child" in his storyline-driven sit-down interview with Michael Cole this week.
It would also put Batista in his more-natural role as a heel, especially after his first night back on the job in January included embracing the evil, dastardly Authority. It's a lasting image that could be played up on the Road to WrestleMania.
It would also capture what PWTorch editor Wade Keller exclusively reported on the VIP website that Orton might be pushed down the ladder at Mania if he does indeed drop the title at the Chamber PPV. (VIP Report on why HERE.)
Bottom line is Orton vs. Batista is a very tough sell. It would also require Alberto Del Rio to put forth the greatest work of his career getting the entire audience to embrace and like Batista going into, at, and through the Chamber PPV.
Yes, Bryan finally winning the WWE World Title at WrestleMania to complete his journey that started at Summerslam would be ideal. But, unless WWE pulls a WrestleMania 9 and has Bryan win the title in an impromptu match after Orton-Batista at WM30, this represents the best scenario to addresses some obvious problems.
And, it can be accomplished. Bryan gets one big celebration at the Chamber PPV, WWE builds heat for six weeks leading to WM30, including the inevitable Bryan vs. Kane match, and Bryan gets to conquer another big mountain in the main event of WM30.
Coming out of WM30, instead of having a lukewarm WWE champion in Batista, WWE would have a solid lead face champ and a number of heels lined up to go after Bryan, starting with Batista again at Extreme Rules.
Of course, this entire scenario for Bryan could be written for John Cena, who is also in the Chamber and is still the #1 star in WWE. But, Cena vs. Batista at WrestleMania 30? That's a completely new discussion.
