My uncle has been in the engineering field for 30+ years. He's worked with all kinds of people, been around the world to different job sites, and dealt with all kinds of challenges that are not mentioned in a handbook or a textbook.
Now, he oversees his engineering department and trains new, college-age workers coming into the field. They know the latest technology, they know the programs, they know how to manipulate lines and circles and graphs and use all kinds of cool tools to create designs and structural lay-outs.
The problem is they don't have real-life, in-the-trenches experience. What happens when a piece of equipment doesn't fit? What happens when a problem arises that was not considered when drawing up the blueprint? What happens when a vendor doesn't have an item, it won't be ready for two months, and the deadline is in one month?
...
And, so, WWE is opening a new, state-of-the-art Performance Center. The Center has all the technology, all the fixings, everything to make an aspiring WWE star succeed.
The idea is to "eliminate all of the excuses." Not enough in-ring time? Here's seven rings. Not enough work-out machines to get your pump in? Here's a giant training facility. No place to practice promos? Here's a giant media room with real-time feedback.
"You walk in this video room and with the touch of a button on an iPad screen, you can work on your character and your promo any time you want. That was a mirror for us," Triple H told Brian Fritz of BetweentheRopes.com at Thursday's Performance Center opening. "It was looking into a mirror and yelling at yourself and talking to yourself and cutting promos on yourself. That's how you did it, right? Technology allows that to happen. Technology allows that what happens here to be seen immediately by the executives in the company."
But, as Brian Fritz noted in his question to Triple H, there is "something to that aspect of world experience," which WWE is attempting to make up for with the Performance Center.
Now, independent wrestlers coming up in the industry have their sights set on WWE, especially as the company stocks up on talent to fill an 80-120 person NXT roster. But, is the next wave of talent truly ready?
Many independent wrestlers have international and domestic wrestling experience, but a precedent has been set that there is a shorter path to (a) getting noticed by WWE and (b) getting your foot in the door. And, WWE is eager for new talent, as they believe they can mold the next wave of wrestlers into the characters they're looking for.
But, it means wrestlers are learning one way to perform, one way to cut a promo, and one way to work a match, which could lead to struggles when having to adjust on the fly.
Curtis Axel has all the tools, the pedigree, and the look, but he talks on the mic like he has eight people in his head. Antonio Cesaro has the size, the wrestling skills, and the look, but he wrestles in the ring like he has eight people in his head.
WWE attempting to define "pro wrestling" in their vision runs the risk of watering down their own product over time. Especially when wrestlers do not have that real-world experience to know their characters, organically tell a story that drives PPVs and ticket sales, and adjust when something goes off-script.
What happens when a crowd in California is bored in Segment 7? What happens when a crowd in New York is bored in Segment 7? What happens when two minutes of a comeback needs to be cut out? What happens when a fan runs into the ring? What happens when a crowd is doing the wave? That's learned from years of experience in the field and knowing how to adjust to curveballs.
WWE believes the Performance Center will make up for the lack of experience. In fact, they're putting a $3.5 million investment behind it. But, can all of the tools and advancements that technology provides overcome real experience? In both WWE and outside of WWE, the story will be told in years to come on who wins this battle.
