Ask the Specialists Roundtable #76
- Question from Jeff in Michigan: If Brock Lesnar leaves after WrestleMania, will Paul Heyman simply retire or stay with WWE? Could he resume his managing of Cesaro or an NXT star?
- "Hits & Misses" Jon Mezzera responds: I don't know the man, but I doubt he would just retire. WWE has found other ways to use him in between appearances by Lesnar like working with C.M. Punk and then Cesaro. I certainly hope he would find the next Paul Heyman Guy and that WWE will do a better job with that than they did with Curtis Axel, Ryback, or Cesaro. I hope that Lesnar remains in WWE, but if not at least Heyman should, as he can really help to get over some new heel wrestler, or help to elevate a current heel to the top of the roster.
- "Mr. PPV" Nathan Kyght responds: Good question. My instinct is that Heyman will stick around, but I'd rather see him used to elevate an NXT talent. Heyman and Prince Devitt (Finn Balor) for example would be very intriguing...
- "Common Fan" Jimmy Eaton (@TheCommonFan) responds: Hi Jeff, I think he may stick around and could become the mouthpiece for a Rollins or Reigns (If a heel turn occurs). He's too valuable of an asset for people that aren't as strong on the mic, so I'd love to see him take someone like Cesaro back under his wing. Will it happen? Doubtful, and who knows if he may take a break himself. He's certainly deserved it.
Regardless of what he does or who he manages (I'd personally like to see a stable that can ultimately replace The Authority), he'll be a fantastic talent that everyone loves to watch, listen to, and for kids to boo. He is after all, the One behind the One in 21-and-1.
- "Mr. TV" Justin James (@Justin_M_James) responds: I have no special insight into Paul Heyman’s future plans. Could he resume managing Cesaro? I guess so, but it didn’t work out the first time. Neither did his managing of Curtis Axel and Ryback. In fact, it’s pretty clear by now that Heyman can’t make new stars in the current WWE environment.
What Heyman does well is act as the background noise for a great talker (C.M. Punk) or as the mouthpiece for someone who isn’t there (Brock Lesnar). When Heyman shares screen space with someone else, there’s no room for that “someone else” (Ryback, Curtis Axel, Cesaro) and the only one who gets over is Heyman. I’d pair Heyman with someone who is already a stand-out, but needs to get to the next level. Seth Rollins would be my pick.
- "Instant Reaction" Ben Tucker (@BTuckerTorch) responds: If I had to guess, I would think that Heyman would stay as an active manager with WWE. Without Lesnar, Heyman's talents could be much better used bringing up a fresh wrestler. If this means Cesaro or an NXT star, I don't know. Potentially it could end up being Reigns. Whoever it is, though, you can't help but expect a rocket to be strapped onto their back.
- "Showstopper" Shawn Valentino responds: Thanks for your question, Jeff. I believe that if Lesnar leaves WWE, then Heyman will still be employed in some capacity. He is easily the best promo in wrestling today, and his skills can definitely be used to help another talent get over. I am not sure who they can place him with, but Heyman is too talented not to be utilized to help a younger wrestler that needs a mouthpiece.
It has been proven that you cannot just put any wrestler and make him a Heyman Guy, but I think that if you get the right talent with him, it can be tremendous. I would like to see Rollins and Heyman together because his managerial skills seem to work best with main event talent, and he and Seth would have a fascinating dynamic.
