Ask the Specialists Roundtable #73

- Question from Mike Sullivan: What do you think of a scenario of The Undertaker being a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble, winning, then getting the opportunity to avenge his loss at WrestleMania in a WWE Title match against Brock Lesnar? It would be an incredible final match to cap his career, especially if he were to win, then retire.

- "Mr. TV" Justin James (@Justin_M_James) responds: Mike, I’m in the “the loss at ‘Mania should be Undertaker’s last match” camp, sorry! That said, if I wanted to see him make a comeback, your plan makes some sense, though I’d want to announce him for the Rumble or at least tease him to get the best possible benefit from it.

- "Hits & Misses" Jon Mezzera responds: No. Did you watch his match with Lesnar at last year's WrestleMania? I don't want to see that again. I think Undertaker should have retired after his second Mania match against Triple H. His match the next year against C.M. Punk was good, but not special. He had something special beyond The Streak going with Shawn Michaels and Triple H. It wasn't special afterwards, and last year it was hard to watch. I don't want to see a re-match. I don't really want to see Undertaker wrestle period.

Now, I am going to WrestleMania this year for the first time, so part of me would love to see his final match live. I'm worried that this is going to be a very lame year to see it live and that Sting vs. Triple H is going to be the only special attraction (as in no Rock, Undertaker, Austin, etc.) and that it will suck. It is 10 years too late for Sting and I have zero desire to see him wrestle. So maybe even seeing a bad Undertaker match would be cool just to say that I saw him wrestle his last match. But, I would much rather see Lesnar defending the title against an opponent who can have a great main event match with like Daniel Bryan.

- "Mr. PPV" Nathan Kyght responds: Good question, Mike. My gut says that if Undertaker comes back, it's Undertaker vs. Bray Wyatt. But, who knows? I certainly think your idea is a good one, but I think that Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns will be the 'Mania main event (although I'd prefer Daniel Bryan vs. Brock Lesnar).

- "Falls Count Anywhere" Tony Donofrio (@TonyDonofrio) responds: Considering the frailty of The Undertaker at this point in his career, I don’t want him anywhere near the WWE World Heavyweight Title. Two years ago against C.M. Punk, Taker still looked like he could go and had a great match with Punk; possibly the last true great match of his career. Last year at WrestleMania, it was painfully obvious that Taker was “running on empty." I can only imagine what type of performance we could potentially see from Taker this year.

I certainly wouldn’t want to see him with Brock Lesnar again; title or no title. I would legitimately fear for the long-term health of Mark Calloway after that one. If this is going to be Undertaker’s last match, I hope that it is announced that way and he can ride off into the sunset officially next year with what would be a huge Hall of Fame send-off in Dallas, Texas. At this point, since The Streak has already been broken, I don’t see the harm in Taker putting over a younger talent this year. I also have no desire to see Taker vs. Sting at this point in their careers. Back in 2011? Yes. 2015? Please, no.

- "Common Fan" Jimmy Eaton (@TheCommonFan) responds: Hi Mike. With all due respect, I hate that idea. I have a friend at my job who wants Sting to come in and be involved in the Rumble match and I compare it to that. The older, more "special attraction" guys have no business in the Rumble, in my opinion. Lesnar and Taker wasn't great the first go-around (although I enjoyed it more than some), and while the revenge plot is simple, it would completely destroy Lesnar winning in the first place. He probably should go out on top but it doesn't look like that's in the cards and I'm sure if I had to take a guess, he's okay with that. Thanks for the question, though!

- "Instant Reaction" Ben Tucker (@BTuckerTorch) responds: I don't see this as a good plan. If Lesnar is leaving, then the (quickly disappearing) heat from ending The Streak should be transferred to a rising star, not given right back to the first guy. What's the point then?

- "Showstopper" Shawn Valentino responds: Thanks for your question, Mike. I do not like the idea. Last year's Lesnar-Undertaker program was awful and I do not think he needs to retire with the World Championship. Lesnar's character was booked so weak for most of the Royal Rumble build-up that WWE made him seem like a lame duck champion. In a sense, he should already have lost the gold to John Cena. I think Taker may have another Mania match in him, but it will not be the same without the aura of the winning streak. The idea of his final match being a re-match of one of the worst moments in wrestling history is not appealing at all.
