Ask the Specialists Roundtable #63

- Question from Matt in Sydney, Australia: With Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns the likely WrestleMania main event, who do you see John Cena facing at WM31?

- "Hits & Misses" Jon Mezzera responds: If Cena is looking to work with someone younger and newer like he did with Bray Wyatt last year, it could be a guy like Cesaro if he starts to get more of a push. It could also be Seth Rollins. That might be more likely at this point. As long as it isn't a triple threat against Randy Orton and Batista, I'll be happy.

- "Mr. PPV" Nathan Kyght responds: Anybody but Hulk Hogan, despite Hogan's full court media press to create buzz for that match earlier this year. I still think there's a lot of money in Cena vs. The Undertaker if Taker is going to come back (although subtracting the Streak factor knocks it down a few notches). If Taker does come back, though, I think it's most likely to have a one-off match with Sting. So Cena is still out in the cold. If it's up to me, I book Cena vs. Daniel Bryan in the third match from the top, and give the lead in an aggressive/friendly tone.

- "Falls Count Anywhere" Tony Donofrio (@TonyDonofrio) responds: With WWE only having one true World champion now, that’s a very big question. This past year, Cena took a “step back” and feuded with Bray Wyatt and had a match on what could be considered the WM undercard. I think the bigger picture here is that it’s going to be up to the WWE braintrust to start to develop important upper card feuds that don’t revolve around the WWE World Title and mid-card feuds that fans can get excited about.

The biggest evidence of this is this year's Night of Champions card, which in essence was a “one-match card” with nothing to really get behind other than Cena and Brock Lesnar for the title. There’s plenty of time for WWE to line up an opponent for Cena for WM31, but it will be interesting to see if WWE can create enough interest in those stories that don’t revolve around the title. However, top names on the list could be Rusev, Cesaro, or even Seth Rollins at this point.

- "Common Fan" Jimmy Eaton (@TheCommonFan) responds: I believe that is the likely main event or co-main event. It's very early to tell who Cena will face, maybe a solid feud with Seth Rollins is possible? Very hard to say this far out but whoever it is, it will definitely be a top draw in the eyes of WWE. I can see C.M. Punk or Hulk Hogan as very long, long shots as well.

- "Instant Reaction" Ben Tucker (@BTuckerTorch) responds: I don't see an obvious slot for Cena at WrestleMania 31. Chances are he'll end up developing more of a tangible issue with The Authority, so a Cena-Triple H semi-main event wouldn't be out of the question. Perhaps elevating Seth Rollins into such a big spotlight with Cena could materialize as well, but it's too far out to say for sure right now.

- "Mr. TV" Justin James (@Justin_M_James) responds: Cena vs. Seth Rollins or Cena vs. Triple H in a "final end to The Authority" match makes sense to me. Please don't let it involve Kane or Randy Orton (who has faced Cena far too many times). Cena vs. Undertaker is always out there, though I have no desire to see Undertaker again in a ring. I think if they get Undertaker in a ring, it needs to be with Sting.

- "Showstopper" Shawn Valentino responds: Thank you for your question, Matt. I believe there are many directions they can take John Cena at WrestleMania 31. People do not realize it, but Cena has not been in the main event at Mania for at least half of his years at the top. I think you may see him in a match against a rising star like Seth Rollins or a legend like Sting. There is also the chance that he can be part of some special tag match with Hogan and Sting versus a team of villains. Then there is the possibility of a returning C.M. Punk or Daniel Bryan taking on Cena. I believe it is good for Cena to fight in a lower card match because it gives him the chance to do something creative, and it allows a younger wrestler like Reigns to prove himself.
