Ask the Specialists Roundtable #13

- Question from Zach in Ohio: Quite simply, which Shield member turns on his teammates and joins Evolution to play the Orton/Batista 10 years ago role?

- "Falls Count Anywhere" Tony Donofrio (@TonyDonofrio) responds: Hopefully, none of them do. The Shield has been a special group in WWE for the past 18 months. When WWE does decide to break them up, it should be from internal strife and not because one of them defects to a group that was relevant a decade ago. I say that with no disrespect to Evolution; I just feel that the reformation of the group isn't long-term and will be around for a few months, at best.

The Shield may go down as this generations Four Horsemen, NWO/DX, or Evolution. Let them continue to write their own story rather than throwing one of them into a group that has only been brought back to help get the group, both collectively and the three of them individually, over.

- "Mr. PPV" Nathan Kyght responds: Interesting, and while I think there is a long run in The Shield as a babyface group, this is also a tangible option. Based on the booking I'd say that Roman Reigns is the WWE"s plan for a major babyface name, and I don't see Seth Rollins having a major impact as a singles heel. He's too natural a babyface as well. So that leaves us with Dean Ambrose.

While I don't see Ambrose fitting into the Evolution gimmick (flashy suits, women, clubs, etc., I'm basing this all on their Titantron video), he's a great talker and seems to have that heel charisma where a sneer comes a little more natural than a fiery hero comeback. I'm not sure that WWE is going to go in the direction you're thinking, but if they do, Ambrose strikes me as the only way to go.

- "Hits & Misses" Jon Mezzera responds: Hopefully none of them.

- "Common Fan" Jimmy Eaton (@TheCommonFan) responds: Good question, Zach. I'm not sure if I see that happening any time soon but if I had a gun to my head, I would probably say Seth Rollins. Ambrose seems like more of a loose cannon character and Reigns seems prone for a break-out face run. Regardless, I'm enjoying the story and where things are headed. WWE seems really behind The Shield and at their young age that means great things for WWE.

- "Instant Reaction" Ben Tucker (@BTuckerTorch) responds: I don't see any of The Shield turning heel to join Evolution. The only one of the three that would fit in with the Evolution image would be Roman Reigns, and it wouldn't be healthy for WWE's next potential number one face of the company to flip between face and heel multiple times before receiving the push of his career.

- "Showstopper" Shawn Valentino responds: Thank you for your question, Zach. The Shield is one of the best acts to arrive in wrestling in years, and it is one of the few things in wrestling with a cool factor. I cannot imagine that any of them would join Evolution because I see the return of the faction as very temporary. That being said, if they continue to remain on the show, I would like a young star to join them, and it would fit the gimmick because the group would have evolved ten years later to have the same function of helping a rising talent.

I have listened to the impact of Evolution be mocked on podcasts, but I genuinely believe that they are the best faction in history. They may have not been the most popular or memorable, but it was executed brilliantly and did not overstay their welcome. The Four Horsemen, NWO, and DX were much bigger, but they had too many horrible variations and had more bad years than they did good. Evolution accomplished its goal of keeping an aging talent relevant, establishing the centerpiece star, and helping guide two younger talents to stardom.

I believe if they decide to keep the faction around, then they should definitely add a select star that fits the image to help build to become a main event player. Dolph Ziggler is lost right now, and he may fit in if they put him in a suit and take away some of the color. There are an array of talents in NXT that may be groomed into position to join Triple H and company. I would not mind seeing Evolution stick around if they can create a new star as they did years ago. It would be simple evolution.
