Ask the Specialists Roundtable #10

- Question from PWTorch reader Ryan Berglund: My question is regarding The Miz's future in WWE. As a wrestler it has been a while since he has been in an interesting storyline. There has been the rumor of him joining forces with Dolph Ziggler as two guys who were tired of being stuck in the mid-card. If that happens, than for the time being my point is moot. But outside of wrestler, Miz has become a real asset to the company with his movie roles, media appearances, and the like. Do you see Miz following the paths of Tensai, who is now announcing under his real name Jason Albert, and Alex Riley just to name a few. Thanks guys, keep up the good work.

- "Mr. PPV" Nathan Kyght responds: This is a tough one for me. I'm sure he's a nice enough guy (he came across as very likable on Chris Jericho's podcast), but honestly? I find The Miz as a character to be a completely skippable part of any WWE broadcast. It's been a long time since he's done anything of note, his style on the mic draws go-away heat, and aside from the fact that he's a "name" that can be booked on TV shows, I really don't see much of an upside anymore.

Do I think he'd be okay on commentary? Well, whenever I've heard him before it's been unremarkable, and I don't see him replacing anyone on the main roster. Move him to commentary on NXT? Sure, why not? But in terms of Miz being a major deal, barring a big overhaul of his current character, I just don't see the point. I also have heard buzz that Dolph Ziggler and Miz may form a group who complains about their role in the company, but really, how much is that going to get over? Two guys telling the crowd they're not very successful? I don't see it.

- "Falls Count Anywhere" Tony Donofrio (@TonyDonofrio) responds: Miz has turned out to be a very good ambassador outside the ring for WWE. His willingness to do several media appearances wherever he's needed probably will keep him in the mix with WWE for a very long time. Whether that means he is on the active roster, as a broadcaster for WWE Network Specials, or as a commentator remains to be seen. Because of his loyalty to WWE, he could turn out to be the next JBL in terms of how he keeps a close relationship with the company as he goes forward.

- "Common Fan" Jimmy Eaton (@TheCommonFan) responds: I can definitely see The Miz slipping into that kind of role. Does he have value as a wrestler? Sure, I thought he was fine in his WM angle with John Cena. Unfortunately he, like Ziggler, have yet to find their groove with odd tweener roles. I think his role outside the ring is part of the reason he stays employed. I feel bad at times for guys like him in in those positions, but ultimately it just comes down to right place, right time. You can see flashes and then they move back to the end of the line.

With the WWE Network, I see fewer immediate releases of talent who work hard and instead WWE finding them a role somewhere else like you mention, be it the pre-shows or other Network hosting/commentary roles. Thanks for the question!

- "Instant Reaction" Ben Tucker (@BTuckerTorch) responds: This is probably the direction Miz will eventually go in, but he still seems to have a lot of miles left on his bump card. It's really a shame that WWE doesn't do more with him; he's a legitimate talent that belongs in the upper mid-card at the very least. Too bad he was blamed for a poor Survivor Series buyrate two-and-a-half-years ago.

- "Showstopper" Shawn Valentino responds: Thank you for your question, Ryan. I believe that The Miz will always have a role within the WWE organization, but I do not see him returning to the main event picture anytime soon. He definitely will not follow the path of Tensai because he has more charisma and a more defined character, but I am quite sure he has seen his last WrestleMania World Championship match.

I think guys like Miz are valuable precisely because they are good corporate assets, but he can also play a better role on the main show if booked better. His face turn was ill-conceived and executed worse. Miz's character is too tone deaf and goofy to be taken seriously, but he can play a more mature heel if he tweaks his own performance. I personally thought he was at his best when he had Alex Riley as his sidekick, and there is a chance they can rekindle that dynamic with another underling.
