WWE reported their latest Network subscriber count of 731,000 as of September 30 (the end of Third Quarter 2014 business).

This represents a slight net gain of 64,000 subscribers from 667,000 reported in mid-May and net gain of 31,000 subscribers from 700,000 at the end of the second quarter.

In WWE's comparative chart, WWE reported only a net gain of 3,000 U.S. subscribers in Q3. International sources provided 28,000 subs to complete the difference between 700k and 731k.

Concerning raw Network subscribers, WWE says they acquired 286,000 subscriptions in the quarter, which means a large, undisclosed number of original subscribers dropped off when the first wave of six-month subscriptions came due in August.

- The Network generated $22.4 million in "subscription revenue" based on an average of 723,000 paid subscribers during the quarter.

In the second quarter, reported Network revenue of $19.4 million.

- The overall picture points to why WWE is (a) adding sponsor ads on the Network and (b) going to a $9.99/month pricing plan with no commitment required to attempt to entice as many subscriptions as possible.

WWE still needs to reach a break-even point of about 1.0 million subscribers, even after management noted "significant cost savings achieved to date."

WWE added: "The rate of WWE Network subscriber adoption is a critical determinant of the Company’s projected future financial performance."

Caldwell's Analysis: The biggest takeaway is that WWE says they acquired 286,000 subs in the quarter - 30,000 of which were international, leaving 256,000 domestic - but they only net-gained 3,000 domestic subs in the quarter. That's a big chunk of subscriptions coming due and not being renewing.
