Rising WWE star Roman Reigns has been pulled from the Night of Champions PPV on Sunday to undergo "emergency surgery."

WWE made the announcement Saturday morning via text blast, noting Reigns has already undergone the surgery and will not be facing Seth Rollins on the PPV.

According to WWE, Reigns's surgery was to repair an "incarcerated hernia," which can be a serious situation where blood flow is restricted in the lower abdominal region.

WWE did not offer a recovery time. WWE says it will be decided by a local surgeon in Nashville who performed the surgery and WWE physician Dr. Chris Amann. Reigns was already in Nashville for Night of Champions when the situation occurred.

Caldwell's Analysis: This sounds like a serious surgery, so most importantly everyone is hopeful Reigns is healthy coming out of this. Looking at where WWE goes from here, Reigns already beat his PPV opponent on Monday's Raw, so it allows WWE to set up a suitable replacement angle where Dean Ambrose returns to attack Rollins one night before Ambrose's advertised return on Raw.

As for Reigns, depending on the recovery time and his health going forward, this could be a good thing for his career, as it will allow WWE to pull back on the character, re-evaluate how they're booking Reigns at this stage of his rise to a top spot, and whether they should still push forward with a march to the WrestleMania 31 main event. As we talked about on Thursday's Livecast, perhaps WWE should reconsider a goal of WM32 to allow Reigns more room to breathe over the next year-and-a-half, find his identity as a singles wrestler and on the mic, and allow the booking to unfold at a more reasonable pace so the audience does not reject Reigns once he arrives at a top spot.
