The following are additional news items from WWE's quarterly conference call with investors held Thursday:
- There was no significant update on the proposed WWE Network. The only real shift in WWE Network talk came from WWE CFO George Barrios stressing both domestic and international opportunities for a Network.
Barrios maintained the company's recent stance that they believe there is "potential for a meaningful subscriber base and significant economic opportunities" domestically as well as "sizable opportunities in international markets."
During the Q&A portion of the conference call, WWE CEO Vince McMahon was asked if increased management expenses relative to previous quarters is a sign that WWE is getting closer to a Network launch.
"Every quarter, we get closer and closer," McMahon said. "We're making investments that are necessary to bring that to fruition as soon as possible."
- WWE maintained an 18-month window for their Top 4 TV licensing deals to be negotiated and renewed, plus a proposed Network to be launched. However, the TV licensing deals and Network partnership talks are "separate discussions" with different business partners,.
WWE feels confident they can increase the value of their TV licensing deals for Raw, Smackdown, etc. based on recent TV deals for NASCAR, the Rose Bowl on ESPN, and NFL deals. "The value of content is driving upward," Barrios said. "Especially with compelling content with broad appeal."
During the Q&A portion, McMahon went so far as to say WWE is "poised more than any show out there to garner what we would hope would be double or who knows."
McMahon also floated the idea of WWE content appearing on sports network broadcasters who are looking to add content.
"I think our content is far more compelling than any one particular sport available," McMahon said. "This is the last great franchise (and) sports networks will look at WWE in terms of the entertainment value. To have that as far as a sports portfolio, opens up far greater revenue opportunities."
- Regarding the Performance Center launch in Orlando, Fla., Barrios said the incremental cost was not significant. Barrios cited that WWE was already operating a facility in Tampa, the cost per-square-foot is less at the Performance Center, and there is "no material change" in the cost of expanding the Developmental talent roster from a range of 50-100 wrestlers to 80-100.
- In the licensing department, Barrios noted that higher toy sales in the U.S. was offset by a decline in video game revenue. This is captured by shipments of WWE's annual franchise video game declining by 65 percent due to THQ going out of business.
Barrios noted that WWE anticipates an improved licensing picture in the second-half of the year as part of WWE's new video game deal with 2K Sports, who will be releasing "WWE 2K14" in the fourth quarter.
- In the movies division, Barrios said they will likely recognize revenue from five Q1 & Q2 movie releases in the second-half of the year. Included will be WWE's box-office success, "The Call." Barrios said the movie is expected to top out at $52 million in total revenue, with $5.9 million profit to WWE on an investment of $1.0 million.
During the Q&A, McMahon said WWE believes they "finally have the correct model" for the films division. "Our risk is a lot less. It's also a change of management," McMahon said. "We're far more selective ... to find what best fits what we do and our audience to bring our audience to these films. Not that it's just WWE fans going to the theater; it's not. We need to broaden our footprint in everything we do."
Asked about utilizing WWE stars in the movies, McMahon said it makes the most sense to feature WWE stars in secondary roles for the theatrical releases. "On a smaller scale, in terms of direct-to-DVD, some of our talent can star and be the star," McMahon said. "In terms of larger theatrical releases, it's important to have supporting - major supporting roles - as talent develops skills for starring roles."
