Former WWE wrestler Tyler Reks (Gabe Tufts) says he made the decision to leave WWE on a four-hour drive from Summerslam in Los Angeles to Raw in Fresno, California last week.
Reks told Arda Ocal and Jimmy Korderas of The Score network that there was no specific breaking point. He said it was a collection of wanting to be at home with his wife and newborn daughter, not wanting to be an absentee father like many people in the wrestling business, and wanting to cut things off before WWE put steam behind his new program with Curt Hawkins.
Reks said he first began seriously considering leaving WWE around April when he was gone for three weeks, which included the bi-annual European Tour. In the background, Reks began working on a new Internet marketing company to have a fall-back plan.
The final straw for him was Summerslam weekend when his family joined him in Los Angeles, but he couldn't do much with his family because of WWE commitments such as Fan Axxess and a three-hour dance class with Hawkins to prepare for their new "Magic Mike" inspired gimmick. After Summerslam, Reks was alone in the car for the four-hour drive to Raw when he prayed and decided it was time to end his career.
Reks said he has no plans to appear on the independents or do any other type of wrestling going forward, calling it a complete retirement. He said he was offered an international gig in Holland, but turned it down because he doesn't ever want to spend another night away from his wife and daughter again.
Reks also described how his final Monday in WWE went. Reks says he met with WWE's new VP of Talent Relations, Jane Geddes, and asked for his release from the company. He says he spent the rest of Monday deciding how to break the news to Hawkins. When it came time to try on new costumes for their gimmick, Reks pulled Hawkins aside to break the news to him. Reks talked up Hawkins's response, saying Hawkins was very understanding even if his departure could jeopardize their new TV opportunity.
- Also in the interview, Reks details his new company, says he still plans to keep his hair, and covers other topics in the audio below.
