WWE Summerslam PPV live report
August 15, 2010
Los Angeles, Calif. at Staples Center

After the PPV went off the air with John Cena pulling out the win for Team WWE over Nexus in the main event, Cena visited with people ringside, shook hands, and signed autographs. It was the typical "send the crowd happy" conclusion to the PPV and live event.

PPV observations

(1) Dolph Ziggler vs. Kofi Kingston. During the match, when the crowd chanted for Kofi, Vickie Guerrero yelled back at the fans to try to draw more heat on the match. I'm not sure if this was picked up on TV.

(2) Melina vs. Alicia Fox. During the match, a lone sailor in the crowd, perhaps on leave, randomly yelled, "I love you Alicia!" It was pretty audibly during a slow point int he match.

(3) Big Show vs. Straight Edge Society. In-person, it looked like C.M. Punk's famously strange chest hair has been replaced by new tattoos. They didn't do Luke Gallows any favors with pinkish tights that looked quite effeminate. And poor Joey Mercury was tossed around like a ragdoll.

Miz Promo - This had to be #2 moment of the night. Miz riled up the crowd, especially with his line that "John Cena said I'm the only superstar who can see him." Miz also had some crowd support and there were a surprising number of people wearing Miz t-shirts.

(4) Randy Orton vs. Sheamus. Sheamus getting himself DQ'ed was a crowd-killing finish that did in the middle of Summerslam. It didn't seem like the right time for a cop-out ending to a WWE Title match. Sheamus keeping his belt continued the tough night for Lakers fans who first had to listen to Miz cut a promo on the Lakers, then watched the "Celtic Warrior" retain. The only thing missing was Shaquille O'Neal in Celtics green and there may have been a riot.

(5) Kane vs. Rey Mysterio. Everyone in the crowd was waiting for The Undertaker and they made it a point to show the audience the empty casket several times. Kane seemed to be laboring a bit when rolling the casket down the aisle, which was our first clue that Taker was in there. The crowd popped big time, of course, when Taker appeared, but, again, they were disappointed by Kane getting the best of him. I guess you really can't be at your best after spending a couple of months in a "vegetative state."

(6) Team WWE vs. Team Nexus. By the time the main event rolled around, you had to think Team Raw would win the match. The fans had not received much in the way of happy endings up until this point. While John Cena had the usual mixed crowd reception, Bret Hart got the biggest pop the whole evening. Regarding the Daniel Bryan surprise, some people in the crowd were happy, but others were disappointed that Triple H didn't come out to "save Raw." There were some "Daniel Bryan" crowd chants and he gave a good account of himself during the match. Chris Jericho was also popular with the crowd. As a quasi-face for the match, most of the crowd enjoyed being permitted to cheer for him. As for Team Nexus, Wade Barrett has it - whatever it is. Of course, there is no mistaking that the WWE star is John Cena, who pulled out the win to send the crowd home happy.

All in all, Summerslam had its ups and downs, but the main event match told a good story to end the PPV.
