The U.S. Senate campaign for former WWE CEO Linda McMahon has released a new TV ad attempting to make light of her wrestling background. It's the second attempt to downplay the "wrestling issue" in McMahon's Senate campaign in Connecticut.

The 30-second ad features two upper-class women having a "conversation" about McMahon's wrestling background, with the purpose being to make it seem like her background is a non-issue with "typical Connecticut voters."

The set-up for the new TV ad is two women hear a radio advertisement for McMahon while driving in a car, then engage in a "conversation" about McMahon as a Senate candidate. The conversation goes:

Woman in passenger seat: "So, what do you think about Linda McMahon?"

Woman in driver's seat: "Well, I like what she's saying."

PS: "What about the wrestling stuff?"

DS: (laughs) "Not exactly my cup of tea."

PS: "It's...a soap opera."

DS: "Really?"

PS: "Look, she tamed the...traveling show world of professional wrestling, turned it into a global company, and created 500 jobs here in Connecticut."

DS: "All right, so think she can shake things up in Washington?"

PS: "Oh yeah."



Caldwell's Analysis: The TV spot is laughable on two completely different levels. It doesn't come across like a real conversation and could make even the most uninformed voter think McMahon has something to hide with her wrestling background. Second, it's another attempt to make light of the very serious health-related concerns McMahon left behind as former WWE CEO. The issue isn't "oh, wrestling is just a scripted soap opera." The issue is historical and current health concerns that McMahon has yet to truly address. Attempting to make light of her "wrestling background" when there are dead bodies and broken-down wrestlers along the path that helped make the McMahons their fortune to fund this Senate campaign is a poor representation of McMahon's character. The TV spot comes across like a failed attempt to "own" her wrestling background.
