U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon has released a new campaign ad with a light-hearted take on her previous "regular job" as WWE CEO. The new ad is an apparent attempt to downplay criticism of WWE that has fueled coverage of her Senate campaign in Connecticut.

The timing of the new ad with McMahon's spin on her WWE background is interesting. Earlier this week, the New Haven Register published a comprehensive report on WWE's history of health and safety concerns under McMahon's watch. Also, Martha Hart, the widow of former WWE wrestler Owen Hart, filed a lawsuit against WWE, Linda McMahon, and Vince McMahon in Connecticut earlier this week.

In the new campaign, McMahon limits the conversation to concerns over WWE's TV content rather than addressing the real issues in play related to wrestler health.

"Before I decided to run for the Senate, I had a regular job," McMahon says in the opening. This is followed by clips of WWE wrestlers in action. "Okay, maybe not a regular job," McMahon says with a half-smile in an attempt at light humor.

"I was CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment - a soap opera that entertains millions every week. And everyone gets in on the action," she continues. This leads to clips of her past involvement in WWE TV storylines.

"That isn't real...but our problems are," she says. McMahon then begins a political speech on the "real problems" in Connecticut that she will attempt to address if elected to Senate.

Caldwell's Analysis: The campaign ad is McMahon's latest attempt to downplay her WWE background to potential Connecticut voters. By attempting to "own the WWE story," McMahon is hoping enough voters are satisfied with a very rudimentary attempt to address concerns over her WWE background so that it will become a non-issue when the Senate race ramps up later this year. This week, McMahon's campaign apparently felt the need to throw some water on the issues with McMahon in the fire related to her WWE background.
