Overnight, former WWE CEO Linda McMahon's chances of winning the Connecticut Senate race improved thanks to a report in the New York Times.

The Times reported that Richard Blumenthal, the Democratic candidate for the Connecticut Senate, has "exaggerated" or "misrepresented" or "misled potential voters" on his Vietnam War record. The report has gained considerable interest overnight, with newspapers picking up the Times report and questioning Blumenthal's credibility.

McMahon responded by circulating the Times report to her constituents. McMahon's Republican opponent, Rob Simmons, issued a statement saying he is "deeply troubled" by the allegations against Blumenthal.

"As someone who served, I respect Richard Blumenthal for wearing the uniform, but I am deeply troubled by allegations that he has misrepresented his service," Simmons said. "Too many have sacrificed too much to have their valor stolen in this way. I hope Mr. Blumenthal steps forward and forthrightly addresses the questions that have arisen about this matter."

Months ago, McMahon was thought to have zero chance against the popular State Attorney General in Connecticut if she won the Republican nomination. It remains to be seen whether a chink in the armor will affect Blumenthal, but it improves McMahon's chances against Blumenthal if they meet in the general election.

McMahon's record isn't exactly spot-free. McMahon and her campaign have yet to truly account for McMahon's role as head of WWE business for most of the last 25 years. That includes overseeing a professional wrestling industry with an abnormally high rate of early deaths, historical steroid and prescription drug abuse, and the recent report on McMahon allegedly impeding a federal investigation in 1989 by tipping off infamous WWE steroid doctor George Zahorian that he would soon be investigated.

Looming in four days is the Republican Convention in Hartford, Connecticut where McMahon and Simmons will meet head to head at the Hartford Convention Center trying to sway delegates. The convention, which runs May 21 and 22, will help decide which Republican candidate gets a shot at Blumenthal, who appears to be more vulnerable than he was a few months ago.
