Former WWE CEO Linda McMahon was the subject of an investigative report by the Hartford Courant over the weekend that drew attention to what seems to be misleading or downright dishonest responses to a series of questions from the Connecticut Board of Education when she joined the BOE last year.

McMahon resigned from the position last week, citing a conflict with her Senate campaign over new rules established for BOE members who are also involved in politics.

The Courant obtained the BOE questionnaire filed in January 2009 where McMahon responded "no" to the following five questions.

(1) Have you been publicly identified, in person, or by virtue of an organizational association, with a particularly controversial national, state, or local issue?

(2) Have you submitted oral or written views to any governmental authority or the news media on any particular controversial issue other than in an official government capacity?

(3) Have you ever written any books or articles?

(4) Have you ever had any association with a person or group or business venture which could be used, even unfairly, to impugn or question your character and qualifications for the requested appointment?

(5) Is there anything in the past involving you or any member of your immediate family which would be a source of embarrassment if it were to become public knowledge?

To a reasonable person, the questions seem cut-and-dry and should be answered "yes." McMahon has certainly been associated with controversial issues related to her family and WWE, her company was involved in a federal steroid investigation, she spoke on-the-record with Congress on steroids two years ago, and the McMahons owning a powerboat named "Sexy Bitch" certainly fits the description for #5.

McMahon responded to the Courant report by essentially saying she was adding her own qualifications to the questions. The Courant reported the following response by McMahon:

"McMahon said she stood by her answers. She said that she had responded to the questions 'from the standpoint' that her association with the WWE was so well-known, and its activities were so much part of the public record, that the questionnaire was seeking 'anything that would have been unknown about me' outside of the WWE."

McMahon's Senate campaign spokesman Ed Patru added: "From our perspective — and from the perspective of a reasonable person — the purpose of the questionnaire was to ascertain things that were unknown, and certainly those who were involved in the confirmation process were well aware of WWE's congressional testimony and programming content. She answered all of the questions against the backdrop of surprises. Her experience with WWE has pretty much been an open book; it's been very public in most every respect."

Caldwell's Analysis: Patru has been anything but reasonable responding to these types of issues during the Senate campaign, so it's pretty laughable he would try to say how a "reasonable person" should interpret the questions. This latest revelation - from a BOE questionnaire - is another example of McMahon trying to play by her own rules and avoid direct questions on her WWE background. It's rather fitting since we've seen this play out time and time again during the Senate campaign.
