WWE CEO/chairman Vince McMahon granted a rare interview this week, with Acorn Newspapers in Connecticut, talking about WrestleMania 26, possibly wrestling his last match on Sunday, and TNA bringing their programming to Monday nights on Spike TV.

McMahon said he doesn't view TNA as competition and blasted the promotion for drawing "a fraction of the audience" compared to WWE Raw and the heavy amount of blood featured on Impact.

“We’re in different businesses. We're in the entertainment business and they’re in the ‘pro wrasslin’ business," McMahon said, with a flashback to his take on WCW. "It’s different markets. When they moved to Monday nights, they threw the kitchen sink at us and only did a fraction of our audience. It doesn’t speak well for the type of product they're trying to present with the tawdry, blood-soaked action. I don’t think that’s what the culture wants these days."

McMahon defended WWE's PG-TV product, saying: "At heart I think we’ve always been a bit of a family affair. If you look at the audience for our live events you will see fathers and sons and mothers and sons and brothers and sisters. This is something an entire family can go out and enjoy together. It’s a lot like baseball in that respect."

McMahon also suggested his match against Bret Hart on Sunday could be his last wrestling match - heavy emphasis on "could" - as he would prefer to focus on his backstage role producing WWE's TV shows.

"I really much more prefer working behind the scenes as a director and a producer than being part of the action. I do hope this will be my last time in the ring, but I say that after every match I’m in," McMahon said. "I’m 64 years old and while I’m in great physical condition and I never want to say never, I really don’t want to do this again."

McMahon also talked about bringing WrestleMania to a level where it's an event at the level of a Super Bowl or the Oscar's, but he added it's not quite to where he wants it to be yet.

"It has grown into everything I ever wanted it to be, but we’re still not there yet," McMahon said. "There’s more that can be done, but it’s grown every year into something that people can’t miss."

Caldwell's Analysis: It's always interesting to read into what Vince McMahon has to say in his rare public interviews. TNA would analyze McMahon's take on the blood as him finding a way to knock TNA when he can't use blood on his PG-rated shows. From my perspective, TNA has really over-done the blood. It's like having a big, fun toy the other kid can't use, yet they over-use it to the point where it's not fun anymore. Do we really need to see Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, and Kurt Angle bleeding every-other-week? No. It kills the effect.

As for the culture part of what McMahon said, there's a segment of the culture paying big money for UFC fights that feature tons of blood. However, there's also a market for WWE's version of pro wrestling with kids and families filling arenas to see the circus when it comes to town, so he has a valid point in that respect. With UFC, though, blood is a result of the action in the ring. It's like a football player walking to the sidelines with blood spewing out of his mouth as a result of the action on the field. With TNA, it's been excessive at times where the blood doesn't have the sense of being the direct result of what's happening inside a worked wrestling match. It's been a geek show at times and TNA has hurt their ability to use blood at the right time to enhance business.
