The main Republican party opponent for former WWE CEO Linda McMahon in the Connecticut Senate race, Richard Simmons, sent a very-detailed and well-researched letter to McMahon today seeking answers to ten key questions related to the history of health issues that have plagued the pro wrestling business under McMahon's watch as WWE CEO.
"You can help clear the air by answering the ten questions I have enclosed," Simmons said. "While not comprehensive in addressing each of the variety of scandals which have encompassed you and the WWE over the years, your forthright answers will help begin to give Republicans a better understanding of your competitiveness in a general election and your worthiness to represent our Party and state."
The questions follow Sunday's Hearst Newspaper report seeking answers on why the U.S. government did not follow up on Congressman Henry Waxman's request for independent oversight in WWE's Wellness Policy.
Simmons's first question sought answers on why Congress's recommendation for more oversight was squashed:
"It has been reported that the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy has to date not acted on Congress's request of last year for further investigation into the WWE's failure to adequately address the pervasive abuse of steroids in your organization. Is the White House's failure to pursue this investigation a consequence of your political support for Rahm Emanuel?"
The fourth question was related to Eddie "Umaga" Fatu's cause of death being determined this week as a lethal mixture of painkillers, muscle relaxers, and anti-depressants.
"Is it really possible that Fatu, a known drug addict who ultimately died of his addiction, passed all of WWE's drug testing with flying colors for nearly two years before your decision to suddenly release him on a only a second strike, and will you release all the results of Fatu's drug tests to prove it? Further, given Fatu's issues, is it true that WWE had sought and or secured an agreement for services by Fatu in the days prior to his death and will you provide supporting documentation?"
Questions five and ten cut to the heart of McMahon's Senate campaign being funded by her personal wealth, citing WWE's lax drug-testing from 1996 to 2006 when WWE's entertainment empire boomed, WWE went public on the New York Stock Exchange, and they bought out their competition (WCW) while an epidemic of wrestlers dying young sprouted up in the industry.
"Despite your extraordinary personal wealth, you claimed that for financial reasons you were forced to eliminate drug testing in the WWE for a decade between 1996 and 2006. Testing was reinstituted only after the high profile death of WWE performer Eddie Guerrero. How much did you save by eliminating drug testing and, given the enormous cost in lives and health of your performers, was it worth it?"
Question six mocked Vince McMahon's admission to Congress that he is not subject to the Wellness Policy, further asking whether Triple H, the son-in-law, is also not subject to Wellness Testing.
Chris Benoit came up in Question 7, with Simmons asking Linda McMahon to explain the drug-testing results prior to the Benoit Family Tragedy in June 2007.
"Why did you choose to allow Chris Benoit to continue abusing steroids despite repeatedly violating your steroid policy, do you think enforcement of the WWE's policy against Benoit might have saved him and his family, and knowing of Benoit's repeated abuse of steroids, why, in the immediate wake of the incident, did you go on Good Morning America and lay responsibility for the tragedy on Benoit's son?"
The questions cover a broad range range of questions in various forms that Linda McMahon has effectively dodged and avoided during her Senate campaign. It will be interesting to see how, if, and in what forum McMahon responds to the questions that cut to the very core of her ability - financially-speaking - to run for Senator.
