WWE News: SPOILERS - Smackdown TV taping report - Detailed second report on Superstars (1/28) and Smackdown (1/29) results

WWE Smackdown TV taping report
January 26, 2010
Cincinnati, Ohio
Report by Richard Houghland, Torch reader
The only Superstars match at last night's taping was Matt Hardy, with Khali and Singh, against David Hart Smith, with the Hart Dynasty. (WWE taped two Superstars match at Monday's Raw taping (SPOILERS).)
Superstars taped for Thursday (1/28)
(1) D.H. Smith (w/Tyson Kidd and Natalya) beat Matt Hardy (w/Great Khali and Ranjin Singh). Decent, but not memorable match won by Smith when Natalya distracted Khali and Singh allowing Smith to pin Hardy. (*)
Khali then cleared the ring of Harts to check on his partner and his condition right before he threw him over the top rope and continued Pogo dancing to his theme music.
Smackdown taped for Friday (1/29)
While Hornswoggle kept the crowd occupied shooting them with the t-shirt gun, a swarm of refs transformed the Superstars ring into the Smackdown set. DX then came out, thankfully without the little guy, tossing more goodies to the crowd. This got everybody all riled up for the start of the show.
Before Triple H could get his second sentence out, Rey Mysterio cut in on DX's dance to confront HBK for disrespecting him on Raw by thinking Rey wasn't going to beat Taker. HBK slammed Rey verbally and was joined by Hunter for a staredown that was interrupted by the Straight Edge Society. Hunter got in his usual gay joke along with references to Britney Spears, Amy Winehouse, the squirrel living on Punk's chin, and someone from the SES not smelling too god. Not having enough personalities involved, they threw Teddy Long into the mix, as he canceled the Tag Team title match. So, no, DX did not drop the belts as expected last night. Instead we get HBK vs. Rey in the main event and Triple H vs. Punk right now. Although HBK returned to the back, Gallows and Serena stayed at ringside.
(1) Triple H beat C.M. Punk (w/Luke Gallows and Serena) via DQ. Hunter controlled the early match before Punk retaliated with a leg scissors and sleeper for a good portion of the match. Punk was disqualified when Serena broke up Hunter's third try at a Pedigree by going for a piggyback ride. The SES beat down Hunter until HBK made the save just before Punk could shave Hunter's head (as if that would happen).
(2) Chris Jericho beat R-Truth. Jericho and R-Truth came out to respectable pops and had a good, albeit short match. Jericho was more sparkly as he apparently bought a bedazzler and jazzed up his boots and trunks. Both wrestlers hit their usual trademarks and Jericho was always working the crowd. Jericho was pinned when R-Truth rolled him up after a failed codebreaker.
(3) IC champion Drew McIntyre beat John Morrison in a No DQ match to retain the IC Title. Morrison got the biggest pop other than Rey or Taker and cut a great promo to boot. Although McIntyre succeeded in using the Singapore cane, he couldn't nail JoMo with the belt or the ring steps he threw at him. As they rumbled in the crowd, one fan was so happy to be on screen he completely ignored the two wrestlers brawling not two feet away. Morrison seemed to have clinched the match when he hip-tossed Drew onto the base of the ringside stairs (post-production will have to add a bang, as it made no noticeable sound on impact), but McIntyre was able to block an attempted Starship Pain and follow it with his double underhook DDT onto the IC belt for the win. Good match, especially for Drew.
In the lowlight of the night, Women's champ Michelle McCool came out bragging about running Mickie James out of WWE and issuing an open challenge to any diva in the back. Mickie's music played, but the fans got Layla in a fat suit and pig snout instead.
(4) Women's champion Michelle McCool vs. Layla happened. Lay-Cool rooted around the ring in a mockery of a match, ending it just as fans started a "this is boring" chant. All the energy created by the previous match was sucked out into the cold Cincinnati air. A zero star match because you can't give negative stars, can you?
They made a big announcement of next date in Cincinnati. Why was the date of May 22 important? Because all three brands will be there. Could it be the annual WWE Draft?
(5) Shawn Michaels beat Rey Mysterio via DQ. The main event of Rey Mysterio vs. HBK presented a simple equation. Take two faces who can't afford a clean loss right before a major PPV, stir in a room full of wrestlers wanting to make a statement in the last big show before the Rumble, and a non-finish is what do get. It was good seeing HBK in a match where he was actually the biggest dog in the fight. This match was like the Roadrunner against Speedy Gonzalez. Rey flipped HBK out of the ring with a head scissors and HBK was able to apply the figure four. After lots of good action, Rey finally nailed his 619, which HBK over-sold. But over-selling allowed him the necessary space to hit a superkick on Rey, who was airbore after a springboard senton. Before either man could regain control, Batista speared HBK and the ref signaled for the bell indicating Rey was DQ'd. The result was not announced, though.
Post-match: Triple H clotheslined Batista and himself over the top rope onto the floor. GONG lights out GONG lights on GONG. Taker was in the ring behind both Rey and HBK and he grabbed both of them before hitting the double chokeslam. Not wanting to be left out, Jericho rushed the ring for his own chokeslam. The SES also came out, but they were smart enough to stay out of Taker's reach.
After the taping: the announcers left as Teddy came out and made the dark match a six-man tag with DX and Taker vs. Gallows, Punk, and Jericho. Batista left selling a leg injury.
Dark Main Event: World Hvt. champion The Undertaker & Unified tag champions DX (Shawn Michaels & Triple H) beat C.M. Punk & Chris Jericho & Luke Gallows. The dark match was very short with HBK taking another beat down before hot-tagging Triple H, who cleared the ring of everybody but Jericho, who was promptly chokeslammed by Undertaker for the pin.
After the dark match, Hunter was flipping his wristbands to the crowd ringside when he made eye contact with the pyro guy. He juked a move just as the flamer shot a spout of flame up, scaring the crowd and maybe Hunter a little too. Boys will be boys and at least we didn't have to sit through another Horny routine.
Overall, a very enjoyable evening of sports entertainment, except for the too-loud pyro and flames that you could feel 150 feet away. As for the merchandise, it was $10 for DX glowsticks, $20-25 for t-shirts, and $10 for a program.
