Former WWE champion "The Rock" Dwayne Johnson said on tonight's "Late Show with David Letterman" on CBS that he won't be returning to WWE for a match, but to "do something fun" like guest-hosting. Johnson didn't establish when he'll be returning, but he talked favorably about wrestling throughout the interview.

Letterman asked Johnson if he would be "stepping back into that world" and Johnson replied, "Not necessarily for a match, but that (WWE) provided me a great platform and if I went back, it would probably be in the capacity of hosting and having a good time."

Johnson talked positively about wrestling, especially the adrenaline rush and "pop" coming out to a live wrestling audience being like nothing else in entertainment. Letterman bringing up the subject of "big time wrestling" drew a strong applause from the audience.

Letterman also poked him a bit about trying to drop "The Rock" from his marketing title. "I'll always be The Rock," Johnson said, which drew a loud applause. "I got to tell you, it's so cool to have Colin Powell come up to you and say, 'Hey, how you doing Rock? To me, it's the coolest damn nickname on the planet."

Johnson spent some time talking about his family's heritage in wrestling, referencing his father, Rocky Johnson, working for Vince McMahon's father and being one-half of the first Black tag team champions. That drew a strong applause from the audience as well.

Letterman then asked why he doesn't go by "Rock Johnson," which Johnson laughed off. He said he's never thought of that before and he quipped they could start something right here on the Late Show.

Letterman referenced "The Wrestler" movie and Johnson shared a story about his father trying to discourage him from getting into the wrestling business in the '90s. Johnson recalled his father telling him to look at their small, two-bedroom apartment in Tampa, Fla. and realize this is all he had after 35 years in wrestling. Johnson then drew a laugh saying his father now takes credit for all of his success.

Part one of the two-part segment then ended with a photo of Rocky Johnson on the way to commercial. After the commercial, Johnson plugged his "Tooth Fairy" movie that comes out on Friday and they wrapped up the segment.

Caldwell's Analysis: Good interview, as Letterman seemed prepared to talk wrestling with Johnson, who was also a good sport about talking about his previous career. Johnson handles these interviews very well with the right balance of seriousness and humor at times to keep the audience tuned in. The interview was also vastly different from Johnson's appearance on Jay Leno last week when there was zero wrestling talk.
