WWE News: Linda McMahon says steroids were a "significant problem" in WWE prior to Wellness Policy

Former WWE CEO Linda McMahon acknowledged steroids were a "significant problem" in WWE prior to the company re-establishing a drug testing policy in 2006. McMahon also discussed the current state of the company's Wellness Policy in a mainstream interview.

"It's as good as it can be for today," McMahon told thehill.com in an interview that will reach politicians and potential voters in Connecticut. "But as technology advances and more is known and developed, we'll continue to develop our policy, as we have done over the years."

McMahon also gave the classic answer on why performance-enhancing drugs are unnecessary in WWE, while ignoring the real issue of steroid use for cosmetic purposes giving wrestlers a competitive advantage over their peers.

"Unlike football or baseball or basketball, where steroids can actually enhance performance, they do nothing to enhance performance in WWE," McMahon said, avoiding the actual real issue. According to The Hill, McMahon added that it is largely about a wrestler’s "charisma, the ability to connect with the audience, and how successfully they can act and perform within the storyline."

The Hill's report added that McMahon's increased notoriety as a front-runner for Connecticut Senate and her $50 million campaign budget will have the result of her opponents becoming "increasingly focused on where that money came from."

Caldwell's Analysis: It would be great to see a WWE executive actually address the real use of steroids in pro wrestling for the competitive advantage it could give a wrestler to earn a higher slot on the card, which means bigger paydays and more incentive to use performance-enhancing drugs for cosmetic reasons. We know PED use does not impact a wrestler's ability to "win" or "lose" a match, but it can give a wrestler a competitive advantage by looking more impressive on TV. It's quite clear the main reason why Batista is being presented as a credible threat to The Undertaker right now on WWE TV is because of his size (no matter whether he is taking steroids or not). Otherwise, McMahon would have to say with a straight face that Batista is more charismatic than someone like C.M. Punk, who was not built up to be a credible threat to The Undertaker during their recent feud because he isn't Batista's size.

As for why McMahon would address the topic in the interview, McMahon is trying - key word - to take ownership over one of the key issues that will come up during her campaign. She's looking to downplay the issue of steroids while she oversaw the company and show her "problem-solving skills" by acknowledging there was an issue prior to the Wellness Policy, then painting a picture that she helped solve the issue.
