CALDWELL: WWE made smart decision bumping John Morrison vs. Dolph Ziggler from the Breaking Point PPV

WWE made the right decision pulling John Morrison vs. Dolph Ziggler from the Breaking Point PPV line-up this Sunday. The match-up between two of WWE's top young stars will one day be a special match, so their encounter should be treated as a bigger deal than a quick addition to the PPV line-up after last week's Smackdown.

To digress for a second, WWE didn't exactly adhere to "truth in advertising" by quietly removing the match from the PPV line-up while pushing folks to order the PPV in advance on their website. Also of note, the incentive for ordering in advance is a Triple H plush bear. Yes, a Triple H plush bear. There's a joke there somewhere, but back on point.

Morrison vs. Ziggler alone probably would have sold a handful of PPVs for Sunday. Ziggler is coming off a star-making performance at Summerslam against Rey Mysterio. Morrison was just elevated to superstar status on Smackdown last week against Rey Mysterio.

Instead of boosting the Breaking Point PPV by "just a handful," WWE is looking down the road to sell a lot more than a handful of PPV buys. Morrison vs. Ziggler could be very special as a semi-main PPV event match.

It's tough to simply leave them off the PPV card, though. Morrison has been Mr. TV Star, but he's consistently been left off PPVs, including Summerslam.

An opening tag match with Morrison & a top young babyface from Raw vs. Dolph & a top young heel from Raw would be a nice "bonus match" to achieve both goals of fulfilling the Dolph vs. Morrison advertising while saving that important singles match-up for a future date.

WWE made the right decision to pull the singles match. Dolph vs. Morrison could be special and WWE has plans to elevate both as main event stars. It will be disappointing for many fans if both are completely left off the card on Sunday, but the match-up will have more value in the long-term.

Torch reader Bryan S. asks: What excuse are they going to give since Ziggler won a match to specifically receive a title shot at Breaking Point? And why is someone getting a title shot before a guy who had to earn a title shot anyway? I know that Rey had to lose the belt...but as someone just watching the show I don't understand (a) What Morrison did to get a title shot before Ziggler, who had to earn one and (b) What Morrison being champion has to do with Ziggler now not getting the shot that he had to earn in the first place.

Caldwell responds: I could have written an entire additional column on the illogical steps WWE has taken, but I just chose to focus on WWE's booking decision itself. Morrison is a TV star right now, no doubt. More people are seeing him in a position to succeed on TV, which is better than him being on PPV just for the sake of having him on PPV. I would prefer to see him on PPV more often, but if the timing isn't right, then it's not worth it right now.
