WWE News: Eric Bischoff cuts a promo on Matt Hardy - calls him a "friggin goof" Jan 11, 2009 - 3:08:28 PM
Earlier this week, we reported first on Matt Hardy's myspace blog describing this generation of pro wrestlers as "smarter" and "more responsible" than the generation of stars in the 1980s that are depicted in "The Wrestler" movie.
Eric Bischoff, former WCW president and WWE on-air authority figure, responded to Hardy's claims in his latest blog. Bischoff didn't pull any punches cutting a promo on Hardy for his beliefs.
"Matt, you are a friggin goof," Bischoff said. "Your recent recap of your 'lifestyle' frames you as a candidate to the Jake Roberts Hall of Fame."
Bischoff said Hardy's suggestion that his generation is more responsible "makes me sick." Bischoff didn't explain why, but opted for a personal attack on Hardy to discredit the current ECW champion.
"You are a mid-card talent that should be grateful to even get a check every other week," Bischoff said. "And rather than looking down your nose at previous generations of professional wrestlers, donate a portion of your check to one of them and ask them to point out all the parallels between your current career path/lifestyle and theirs. It would be the smartest and most responsible thing you could do."
Eric nailed it on the head. Give the championship to someone worthy like
Orton or even back to Punk.

Bischoff = 100% right
tho i dont believe matt should be a mid card talent. V1 was brilliant and
should of gone a lot farther. regardless, he is upper mid card at best.

i gotta go with eric on this. its ironic matt is saying this stuff
considering his brother got suspended less than a year ago for the 2nd
time. matt himself parties alot alongside his brother. he wouldnt know
anything about what the business was like backthen anyways. those guys
worked more, took alot more stuff and went through alot more than anyone
could imagine. i personally would like to hear someone like the Undertaker
talk about this kind of stuff. what the hell does matt hardy know about
anything?

What the hell do you know about anything? I'd say Matt Hardy knows more
about the wrestling biz than Bischoff,or any of us on this site seeing how
the guy is actually a wrestler.
The fact that he calls Matt Hardy, who is one of the top champions in WWE a
mid card talent that's lucky to have a job shows how irrelevant he is these
days.

Well put Mike...unlike Bischoff, Hardy actually HAS a job in the rasslin'
business, which would automatically give what he says more credibility than
Bischoff.

Yeah...Matt knows more about wrestling than Eric...obviously if you think
that, you are a moron!
Everything Bischoff said is right. Matt is a life-time mid-carder and the
wrestlers today do still take drugs, drink, party and act like kids who got
into Daddy's liquor cabinet. If the business is as clean as all the guys in
WWE who claim so, why are guys still dropping down dead, getting suspended
for wellness policy stuff, getting fines for drugs and so on?
Wrestlers are wrestlers, they will always be druggies and drinkers for the
most part, it will never change regardless of what WWE or anybody else do
to try and change it.

I think I'm pretty justified in saying that Matt knows more about the
wrestling business than Bischoff does, although I probably should have been
more clear and said from a lifestyle point of view. Yes, Bischoff was the
President of WCW at one time, but besides the occasional match, he made
ridiculous contracts and was an on air authority figure that didn't
wrestle.
I'd imagine Eric knows a lot about the lifestyle of a wrestler from being
around them backstage, but you can't compare a guy like Bischoff and a guy
like Matt Hardy, who has been on the road, all around the world, taking
bumps along the way (no pun intended) for about 15 years.
I can only imagine that if Edge,Christian and The Hardy Boyz weren't under
WWE contract at the time, Bischoff would have offered them the biggest
contracts of their lives after No Mercy 1999.

Hardy knows more about wrestling than Bischoff? why? because he's a
wrestler?
Bischoff worked backstage with talent. Bischoff's signing of the Great
Muta alone should tell you something about the man's talent scouting
ability.
I agree Matt is talented, and fun to watch. But if Matt Hardy knows so
much, why did just a few short years ago, he lose his job over letting
personal affairs get in the way of business matters?
Boy, THAT speaks to how responsible this generation of wrestlers is.

Mike,
You do realise that Eric Bischoff worked in the AWA prior to going to WCW.
He's been in the wrestling business far longer than Matt has been so I
think he would know more about the previous generation of wrestlers. He was
working with these guys while Matt & his brother Jeff were kids watching it
on television.
Bischoff may have run WCW into the ground but he still knows more about
that previous generation of wrestlers than Matt does. Sorry, I like Matt
Hardy myself but if Eric Bischoff says he is a "goof" then maybe he is.

As so many of you have pointed out, Bischoff is not a true "wrester".
However, neither is J.R., yet how many would argue over his wrestling
knowledge? It is the same for Eric Bischoff. He has been there and done
that many times over. He has more than enough right to say what he did
about Matt.

... I will bet, however, that for every Bishoff that can wipe the mat with
Hardy, experience-wise, there is a wrestler who can destroy Bishoff with
how lousy he ran WCW. To each his own. Second of all, I have a sneaking
suspicion Matt didn't exactly say what he actually meant. Responsibility
can mean a lot of things. Having said that, in this case Bishoff had a
clean field to pummel Hardy's ill-concieved comments.
WJS
11 Jan 2009, 22:36
There is a reason why WCW went under and part of that reason was Bischoff
having no clue who the true mid carders were. If I were Hardy I would take
it as a compliment. After all Bischoff did say guys like Benoit, Jericho
and Guerrero were mid carders and would never make it as main eventers.
"Bischoff worked backstage with talent. Bischoff's signing of the Great
Muta alone should tell you something about the man's talent scouting
ability."
Let's not forget Zeus, Lochness, Warrior, shall I go on?

Good for Bischoff. He told Hardy what needed to be said. I never
understood why Matt Hardy has a title; put it on a wrestler who is more
deserving and one that can put on a good match week after week.
Mike

Maybe I am being a little hard and possibly misinformed about Bischoff and
his experience, but I don't think his comments were right.

Bischoff has been in the "biz" far longer then either Hardy. Just because
Eric, doesnt wrestle( and he did a few matches) he probally has more
knowlledge in his pinky then those goof ball Hardys. How do you run a
wrestling company but not know how the "biz" is? Even if Eric has never
done a drug, seroid, drank etc he still has had to deal with wrestlers who
have those problems/addictions
Steve
12 Jan 2009, 05:13
Bischoff only knows what the big stars go through. When he ran WCW, he
clearly spent his time with Hall, Nash, Hogan. Besides the NWO, he ran WCW
into the ground. He does not know what the "kids" are doing. For everyone
putting Matt down, he worked from jobber to get here, which is how it used
to be, not like a Lesnar or Lashley, Matt is dedicated to the biz.

Matt Hardy a top champion? Being ecw champ is like being the champion of
sunday night heat, or velocity. ecw is the not ready for raw cast and
anyone who thinks that title elevates matt to the same pecking order as
HHH, orton, cena, and batista is living in a fantasy world. i know what ur
thinking, a title with such great champions as chavo and mark henry HAS to
elevate you to a top main even star *groan*. Eric may have ran wcw into the
ground, but he has been in wrestling since his awa days. saying matt hardy
has more experience in and around the business is so ignorant it makes my
head spin.
Mike
12 Jan 2009, 09:58
But the question here is does Eric know more about the current generation
of wrestlers and what they go through better than someone who is actually a
wrestler? Obviously if I were starting up a promotion tomorrow I'd pick
Eric Bischoff over Matt Hardy to run it, it's a no brainer.
Matt to some extent gave a good "company man" response to the movie one
could assume, but you also have to assume he knows what he's talking
about.
Without trying to sound like I'm backpedaling I really meant that Matt
knows more about the industry from the point of view of a wrestler, which
is what Bischoff appears to be calling into question.

Matt Hardy is okay...he shouldn't be the ECW champ though

Riiiight, Matt. And what was Jeff doing again?
The Natural
22 Jan 2009, 05:51
Eric who? If he needs mid carder's look no further than THE NEW BLOOD past
matches with the WCW. And what exactly is Hulk Hogan's CWC. What a way to
put a stamp on your brilliant career Hogan and Bishoff. Remember kid's The
NWO died a long time ago, and are any of you "mark's" staying up all night
with these superstar's and dancin' a little longer with them ,cause if not
get out of your high chairs and just enjoy what it really is
....entertainment.

Matt Hardy is awesome. He has been through so much in his career and really
deserves to be a top champion. His words were taken way out of context, he
wasn't insulting anyone. He was just saying that IN HIS OPINION (Which i
believe everyone is entitled to) wrestling has evolved since the 80s. There
is no denying the truth in his statement, whether you agree or disagree. Of
course the business has evolved in 20+ years. Sure people are still doing
drugs and drinking a lot, but the point is with all of the wellness checks
it is not as bad as it was back then. Plus, who is bischoff to be ripping
Matt Hardy for his sleep schedule? As long as he is able to do his job week
after week it doesnt matter if he is sleeping or not. Give the guy a break.
If you don't like what he says, don't read it. I for one, enjoy his blogs
and how in touch with his fans he really is. You show me anyone else who is
as open with their fan base as Matt Hardy is with his because I don't think
its possible.
