WWE Raw Reax #2: "Chris Jericho is the single greatest thing on any wrestling show right now." Aug 19, 2008 - 1:29:06 PM
Matt Hoffman of Glendale, Ariz. (5.0): Best match: C.M. Punk vs. Chris Jericho. Worst Match: Batista vs. Paul Burchil. For a post-PPV show, I was very disappointed. The Jericho promo was money, but, why did they wait to show Punk until shortly after the second hour start? The endless array of squashes almost reminded me of WWF Superstars. Although, the last match was good, the outcome was all wrong. Punk needs the win more than Jericho would be hurt by the loss. Finally, this championship scramble looks to give every appearance of a "clusterflop." (Thank you edited version of "Heartbreak Ridge"). I've seen it once, it was on Raw, and was for the Hardcore Title. It was stupid then, and it's worse now. I hate to say this, but, they should go with an old stand-by... The Elimination Chamber.
Bryan Cullers of Chicago, Ill. (5.0): Best Match: C.M. Punk vs. Chris Jericho. Worst Match: Tag Champs being destroyed. If you looked up the defintion of average in the dictionary you would find this weeks edition of Raw as an example. I think it says something when a person like me who has been a WWE fan for 11 years, has Raw come to town and I feel no urgency to attend the show at all. This week's show had some good, but a lot more that was not so good. I'm actually fine with Batista's squash of Paul Birchill because Batista needed to look strong and Birchill needs to find something else to do fo a living. I'm sorry , but the guy sucks to me. The womens match was decent and went longer than two minutes for a change. It was great to see Kofi Kingston get his heat back after unjustly losing his IC Title at SummerSlam. I know I'm in the minority, but I just don't find Santino Marella that entertaining. Sure he's funny, but he is the worst worker not named Khali in the company. I say cut Santino and bring up Colt Cabana; he is funny and he can work. Speaking of things that need to go, If I see one more handicap match with John Cena I am going to throw up. Tonight's debacle was made even worse by the fact that he squashed the world tag team champions. Seriously, I mean how can I "suspend my disbelief" when you have a guy whose punches could not break an egg shell beat two men at once. Chris Jericho's opening promo and match with C.M. Punk once again showed why he might be the best performer in the game today. His facial expressions and mannerism are on the money and he knows exactly what to do to get the crowd boo him. With Unforgiven coming up am I the only one who feels like C.M. Punk's title reign is coming to an end ? If it does it will really be a shame because he is the most original act that has come on the WWE scene in a long time.
Alex Roberts in the UK (7.0): Best Match: Jericho vs. Punk. Worst Match: Batista vs. Burchill. Chris Jericho is the single greatest thing on any wrestling show right now, his show opening promo was phenomenal and he helped C.M. Punk produce his greatest WWE match to date in the Raw main event. The time has undoubtedly come to consider Jericho for another run with the World Title. Perhaps the time has come to abandon any plans for a Cena-Batista title match at WrestleMania and go with Michaels challenging Jericho instead. A Michaels return at The Rumble to set up a Mania main event with Jericho is no doubt a long shot (at best) but I live in hope. Raw away from Chris Jericho was a little hit and miss. Paul Burchill has held on longer than I thought he would, but he finally seems to be on the verge of release (a TNA run no doubt beckons) after his farewell squash at the hands of Batista. I'm not really sure what that match did for Batista nor do I know what the point of him being beaten down by Kane 24-hours after beating Cena was. And is it not a bit odd that Batista is close enough to Mysterio to get beaten down seeking to extract revenge on Kane but not close enough to ask where he's been for the past few weeks? And why didn't he actually ask where Mysterio is now? After a fantastic reveal last week, WWE dropped the ball on this angle this week. Once again I'm disappointed that Jamie Noble's push has come to a screeching halt; two squashes in as many weeks is not good. Cena beating Simply Priceless isn't all bad, admittedly they should never have lost that match, what with them being tag champs and all but at least they were given some time to shine and hit some offence, which is more than we've come to expect in these situations. Not enough Santino and Phoenix this week although a D-Lo vs. Santino feud should be interesting if that's the direction they're going. On one final note, have the WWE writers been stealing ideas from Vince Russo? What the hell is the Unforgiven main event all about? Why are standard traditional matches frowned upon so much within modern wrestling?
