WWE News: BBC News reports on Kofi Kingston's heritage from Africa Jul 2, 2008 - 7:11:40 AM
In an article published in BBC Focus on Africa magazine, Kofi Kingston's identity is revealed as Kofi Sarkodie-Mensah from the West African country of Ghana. Kofi is the son of prominent parents, who struggle with his TV character of a faux Jamaican wrestler.
Kofi's mother, who is the head of a Ghanaian-American organization in the U.S., has told Kofi, "Your cousins watch you on TV in Ghana and want to know why you don't say you're from Ghana." Kofi's reply is that it's simply business, as WWE decided fans would connect with a wrestler billed from Jamaica more than Ghana.
"She's very happy I am doing what I want to do," Kofi says of his mother. "But I don't think she knows how big wrestling really is."
Kofi says he was expected to follow in his father's footsteps of joining the academic world, but he knew it wasn't for him his first day in a cubicle.
"I know it is a very anti-intellectual thing," Kofi's father says about Kofi choosing wrestling over academics, but I think everybody should get up in the morning and be excited about what they do."
