TORCH TRIVIA 2/21: Answer to who Goldberg challenged to a match on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno 10 years ago Feb 22, 2009 - 6:19:19 AM
Original question: Ten years ago on the February 19, 1999 edition of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, wrestler Bill Goldberg appeared on the show with Calista Flockhart and actor Kevin Costner. Who did Goldberg issue an open challenge to for a wrestling match?
(a) Hulk Hogan
(b) Dennis Rodman
(c) Steve Austin
(d) The Rock
The answer is (c) Steve Austin. At the end of the interview, Goldberg challenged Steve Austin to a match. He said since he began wrestling people have called him an Austin rip-off and offered to put up $100,000 of his own money to settle it once and for all. Austin responded on the Howard Stern radio show by saying he wouldn't accept the challenge. He called Goldberg Ted Turner's version of himself (Austin) and mentioned their similar look to back up his claim.
Torch Trivia expert Dusty Robinson provides some context: "It was a publicity ploy by Eric Bischoff and Kevin Nash. Goldberg didn't want to do it, feeling it would make him look like a lesser star and rightfully so. He did it, but with such a lack of enthusiasm that it came off as lame."
