Ian Hunter here, walking on out to that surfer guitar rift from the SumerSlam PPV. At least, the one they used once before they started cramming soundtracks down our throat from various artists who weren’t worth mentioning. The PPV came and went this past weekend to a decent amount of fanfare and actually ended on a decent high note. Now in the aftermath of two poor title matches, a so-so battle of the Raw main eventers, and one of the better Cell matches we’ve seen in years, we take one last look back at the past in our final week of SummerSlam trivia. Bur first, we need to answer last week’s questions.
1: D. All of Bret’s brothers were in the ring, but Stu was no where to be seen.
2: B. Who else would it be but Mick? Surprisingly all accounts say it didn’t take much convincing on his part to get Undertaker on board.
3: Todd Pettengill made his last official WWF appearance at SummerSlam ’97. He has since gone on to have a comedy CD career. …I think.
4: C. Ron “Farooq” Simmons was due to make his way to the ring to further his feud with The Rock. But plans were changed a week before for him to start teaming with Brashaw down the road.
5: D. The match would have been a First Blood Match, but after the reaction they got from the first version of this match, McMahon just took the same match and upped the ante.
I have no idea what happened this week, but when I checked my email I had NO ONE ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS!!! Lots of spam, but no responses. Don’t know what happened, but if it happens again this week, we may have to switch emails. So for those of you who knew all and mailed it in, give yourself a pat on the back, Barry Horowitz style. Anyway, let’s move onto our final week of SummerSlam trivia. Answer the questions and email your answers to TorchTrivia@gmail.com. We'll post the names of those who got ALL FIVE correct. Good luck to you all!
1. SummerSlam 2000 brought about the change in the logo… and that’s about it. With Austin still on the shelf, the WWF was recycling previous matches over and over with different outcomes. Undertaker against Kane, another TLC match, Benoit against Jericho in a 2/3 falls match (which stole the show in some eyes), and a triple threat match for the WWF title with The Rock, Triple H and Kurt Angle. In the midst of all this was a Hardcore title match between Shane McMahon and Steve Blackman. One of Blackman’s finest moment, he beat the living rag doll from pillar to post (even with Test and Albert running in for half the match), concluding in a 40 foot drop from the top of the set to the floor, followed by an elbow drop from Blackman. Out question to you, who originally helped him with the belt from Blackman in the first place?
A. Test & Albert
B. Triple H
C. Kurt Angle
D. Edge & Christian
E. Al Snow
2. Next will be a write-in. 2001 was the SummerSlam of the Invasion. Aside from Jeff Hardy vs. Rob Van Dam in a ladder match, the majority of the PPV (main event’s included) was pretty forgettable. Seriously, before going on, name one other match from this event without looking it up. Can’t, can ya. Anyway, the big two title matches were The Rock vs. Booker T for the WCW title, and Austin vs. Kurt Angle for the WWF Title, making it the first and only PPV where both promotions’ major championships were defended on the same card. The Rock beat Booker for his title, but Angle and Austin had what was pretty much a twenty minute brawl. If not for the WCW angle this could have been a much better match, but was sadly tainted with controversy in a disqualification. Who cost Kurt Angle the match?
3. We already covered the crap that was 2002, so let’s move onto 2003. Shane O’Mac was back and beating the hell out of Eric Bischoff, Kurt Angle was still in his heated war with Brock Lesnar walking away with the WWE title, and the Elimination Chamber made it’s second appearance for the World title. The six men put into this match were Triple H, Goldberg, Chris Jericho, Randy Orton, Kevin Nash and Shawn Michaels. Admittedly, the company had other ideas headed into SummerSlam for the world title, as it was originally going to be a Fatal-4-Way, then talk of a cage match was tossed around. Finally it was decided to go all the way and bring back the Chamber, which required them to add more people. Which of these men was a last minute addition to make the match full?
A. Goldberg
B. Randy Orton
C. Kevin Nash
D. Shawn Michaels
E. Chris Jericho
4. Next will be another write-in. 2005 is actually regarded as one of the more embarrassing SummerSlam events to date. A number of the feuds were considered lackluster and not very entertaining on paper. Batista beat JBL, Cena beat Jericho, Kurt Angle beat Eugene, and Rey Mysterio beat Eddie Guerrero in a “custody-ladder match.” In all, a very predictable PPV for most. But the match that everyone wanted to see was Hulk Hogan vs. Shawn Michaels. Word went around that the two were going to be in a series of matches where they would each win one and the final winner would be decided later. But Hogan bailed out on the deal citing a knee injury and demanded he win the match. So Shawn, not to be outdone by the politics, made Hogan look like a fool by overselling every single hit. Everything from doing tumbles from a shove, to falling out of the ring from a shoulderblock. At the end of this whole ordeal Shawn went up to Hogan and said one famous line. What did he say?
5. One more write-in question for you. Last year saw a number of circumstances and changes in WWE. Beth Phoenix made her PPV debut, Steve Austin made a cameo appearance for a beer drinking contest with (of all people ) MVP and Matt Hardy, Booker T made his last WWE PPV appearance, and Triple H made his return to the ring after yet another surgery. In fact, let’s focus on that for a second. Hunter has been no stranger to surgery, having his legs worked on a number of times just to be able to walk, let alone perform in the ring. Upon the announcement of his return, WWE immediately started to release promos for his return that invoked memories of an old 1970’s television show. What show was this? A quick hint, it’s also been used as a metaphor for another WWF/E wrestler in the past.
