Torch Trivia: How much do you know about prior Kings Of The Ring? Apr 23, 2008 - 1:30:00 PM
Dun! Dun-Dun-Dun!!! Ian Hunter here, walking on out to the red, white and blue. No, not the American flag, but ol’ Union Jack. It appears our manly man Lord William Regal got a promotion to King this week. RAW was three hours this week and since they weren’t celebrating anything special, I knew it was going to be a bad show, so I didn’t watch most of it. Tuning in only when I cared to, and after seeing the matches I think I’m glad I did that. When I saw the promo for that final match, I knew instantly Regal was going to win because it’s obvious no one in management really likes C.M. Punk. I mean, he won the WrestleMania throwaway match. Did you really expect to see King Cookie Monster? But the question is, what kind of crown will Regal hold over the next year? A Hart crown, or a Duggan crown. So in tribute to his win, this weeks trivia will be about King Of The Ring. But first, we need to answer last week’s questions.
1: Mike Chioda was the referee to replace Hebner. If you listen to the footage carefully, you can almost make out Chioda’s voice yelling at Hebner that he’s getting up too soon.
2: E. Jim Ross, who was in talent relations at the time, got roughly 200 phone calls that night from people all across the board asking him what happened. I can only imagine what his answer was all night long to the calls he did take.
3: E. D.O.A. More specifically, the Harris Brothers. Triple H commented on the act years later on the Michaels DVD. Too bad they were gone within a year of that act and got nothing in return.
4: B. The Undertaker was the one who got Vince to open the door. Makes you wonder if he did walk out, what would have happened with him? Would he have gone to WCW or retired? Oh well.
5: C: DiBiase, who at the time was a minister of a born-again church tried to get the two together in 2004 to hash things out and more or less “forgive and forget”. Hart wasn’t up for either.
It appears a lot of people knew most of what happened, but not all. We only have one winner this week and a lot of close calls. Congrats to Jeff Patrus for getting them all right. Your prize… a Canadian flag that Michaels shoved up his nose. Yeah, it’s not much to look at, and you’ll probably wanna wash it, but there you go. It’s a new week and it’s time to crown us some winners! Answer the questions and email your answers to TorchTrivia@gmail.com. We'll post the names of those who got ALL FIVE correct. Good luck to you all!
1. Now earlier I made reference to the Duggan Crown. A term used by wrestling fans to describe wrestlers who were poor Kings in the WWF/E. Named of course after Hacksaw Jim Duggan. In hindsight the term King was used the WWF to give a position of “glory” to a wrestler who didn’t quite fit the mold of what management would consider “championship material”. Harley Race (a former NWA Champion) won the crown in 1986 and proudly held the crown until he underwent surgery for a hernia, and the company crowned a new King. Race tried to win it back, but couldn’t, and the crown eventually went to Duggan after Race left for WCW. Who was the King between Race and Duggan?
A. Ted DiBiase
B. Tito Santana
C. Greg Valentine
D. Haku
E. Don Muraco
2. Next will be a write-in question. Now King Of The Ring was a tournament long before the official PPV in 1993. It was that tournament that crowned Race king to begin with. But until 1993 the reception and crown were used rarely in the actual tournament. Which is why the entire point of it being an unofficial championship became the norm. In the years before it became a prize to behold in the company, only two men won the tournament before actually getting the crown. Name both men.
3. Now once the tournament kicked into gear every year, there have been good kings and horrible kings. Good kings usually wear the Hart crown, defined by both Hart brothers who won in 1993 and 1994. We’re going to skip over the first and focus on Owen. Owen had probably the easier half of the bracket. He defeated Doink to qualify, beat Tatanka in easy fashion, had a decent high flying match with the 1-2-3 Kid, and then took on Razor Ramon in the finals. But Owen couldn’t make it to the end on his own, he needed a little help. Who came to Owen’s aid to help him win the tournament?
A. Jim Neidart
B. Davey Boy Smith
C. Koko B. Ware
D. Bret Hart
E. I.R.S.
4. Now one of the first really bad kings was King Mabel. Or as we know him today… Big Daddy V. Aside from being a former tag-team champion as part of Men On A Mission (and later a hardcore champion as Viscera), Mabel is the definition of a Duggan Crown holder. No major achievements other than being a gimmick character for the majority of his WWF/E career, no big singles championships, and no long-term recognition of his achievements. The only big claim to fame he could take during his time as King was putting one wrestler out of action for a period of time. Who was this?
A. Shawn Michaels
B. Savio Vega
C. Deisel
D. Psycho Sid
E. The Undertaker
5. Down the road after Austin and Hunter became Kings, the tournament was viewed as a platform for people to take off to the next level with their careers. Some went onto winning their first major singles championships, while others became more infamous for the characters they portrayed. But of course not every King is a winner and many have flopped over the years. Either due to the fact that the tournament win was unnecessary, or that it did nothing for their career. Which of these men had already won either the Intercontinental or World Championship before their tournament win?
A. Edge
B. Kurt Angle
C. Billy Gunn
D. Ken Shamrock
E. Brock Lesnar
