You can't see me, my time is now. Now! Ian Hunter here, coming out dressed like a ghetto mallrat and acting like a twelve year old foster child with ADHD. I know what you're thinking, insulting Cena two weeks in a row, don't I have anything original? I do, but to be honest, I wouldn't need to do it if he didn't make it so easy. Every time I think I can walk away and go to someone else, he comes out to that music (which I have to say, whenever I hear those trumpets, I suddenly crave a taco) and looks at me through my television as if to say "No, Ian, here's another target on my back. Take aim." Like this week for example, there's only two words to describe that last segment... character filler. Who the hell has an arm wrestling contest anymore? This isn't Over The Top. They're horrible time wasters. (Well, maybe beer drinking contests are neck and neck. Damned TNA.) So I thought, why the hell not? This week we're doing trivia on arm wrestling contests in pro wrestling. But first, we need to answer last week's questions.
1: E. Jake was taking on Hulk Hogan. They did three matches, one taped and two dark shows. Jake got cheers at all three. Since Hogan was the company hero at the time, having Jake take him on with that kind of reaction was a no-no. So Jake was pushed to the Honky Tonk Man while Hogan continued his journey to Andre.
2: C. Randy Savage never got the treatment. In fact, Savage appeared with Sting in the rafters once. But Savage went to the NWO before Sting started doing his tests. Although that didn't stop Sting from beaning him with a bat down the road.
3: A. Flash Funk took on Miavia and defeated him May 26th, 1997. It was his last match before joining the Nation.
4: B. Dreamer took ten shots to the back. As he would later talk about on the ECW DVD, he wanted to stop after the second shot but kept going because he knew they were doing something special. Audience members even begged him to stop, but he took the shots anyway. It's currently one of the most sought after clips from the early days of ECW.
5. B. Kurt Angle changed places with Austin. While Angle had already turned heel by joining the Alliance, the deal was that he was actually working with McMahon, and therefore was still a good guy in waiting. Some guessed Jericho, but really Jericho's heel turn wasn't set to happen until Armageddon.
Sadly this week, no winners. And most everyone got more than one wrong, showing that this week was harder than previous weeks. So we'll have to try again this week to find some trivia masters. Answer the questions and email your answers to TorchTrivia@gmail.com. We’ll post the names of those who got ALL FIVE correct. Good luck to you all!
1. The first Clash Of The Champions of 1993 would be one of the last acts of Bill Watts's reign of horror over WCW, and it shows why. It would be one of the lowest rated Clash events during the run, in part to Jesse Ventura's arm wrestling contest during the event, which ratings wise was the lowest point in the event. Which with all due respect, can't be blamed on Ventura, but more on the booking. Tony Atlas, one of the best body builders in wrestling and flatout strongest men to grace the squared circle, lost the match. Who did he lose to?
A. Big Van Vader
B. Barry Windham
C. Vinnie Vegas
D. Arn Anderson
E. Ron Simmons
2. The 1995 Great American Bash used an arm wrestling match for filler, not just on the card but for episodes to come down the line on television. Dave Sullivan, the storyline lesser brother of the southern legend Kevin Sullivan, took on the then struggling Diamond Dallas Page. In standard fashion, DDP looked like he was going to be the victor. Then in a moment where Bobby Heenan called "a surge of retard strength", he turned the tides on Page and won. What did he win?
A. $10,000.
B. A shot at the TV Title.
C. A date with Kimberly.
D. Page to be his slave.
E. A public apology from Page.
3. Women arm wrestling matches are common place, especially among "lesser" professionals who have a hard time carrying a match. Sable, Tori, Jackie, Ivory, they all fell to it. But probably one of the worst was Terri vs. The Kat. It was pretty much a chance for Jerry Lawler to make as many sex jokes as he could in one night while adding fuel to what little of a feud these two were having at the time. But of course this was the attitude era, so they didn't just do it once. No my friends, they did it twice. The first time they did it was on Smackdown in early 2000, Terri won and was promptly attacked by Kat in the corner with a bad bronco buster. The second was at a PPV event months later where Kat won, despite clearly seeing Kat lift her second hand up from the pole, therefore giving her no leverage. What PPV was the second one at?
A. Summerslam
B. Backlash
C. Insurrextion
D. No Mercy
E. King Of The Ring
4. Probably one of the worst arm wrestling events to happen in recent times (with the exception of Cena-Henry) was Triple H and Scott Steiner. Steiner had just barely made his was back to the WWE after his contract with Turner was done, and much like they've done with other stars coming in from that kind of position, they started him off near the top and put him against Triple H. Part of this horribly stiff feud involved an arm wrestling match where Steiner toyed with Hunter and eventually beat him badly. Our question to you, who was in Triple H's corner that night?
A. Vince McMahon
B. Eric Bischoff
C. Stephanie McMahon
D. Ric Flair
E. X-Pac
5. Did you know Arn Anderson had to arm wrestle in WCW once? (What is it with WCW and arm wrestling?) Arn got into a bit of a scuffle one evening with Malenko over being part of the Four Horsemen and what it meant, when Bischoff came down to the ring and decided to cause trouble by asking what kind of man Arn was. After a boring tiraid from Uncle Eric, the two agreed to arm wrestle, because that's the best they could come up with. The following week Arn comes in with Malenko, and Eric hops on down with an nWo member to not only take his place but win very quickly. Who was the replacement?
A. Buff Bagwell
B. Scott Norton
C. The Disciple
D. V. K. Wallstreet
E. Brian Adams
