Trivia: Five questions on Chris Jericho - ECW, Mexico, WCW salary, Goldberg, early WWE plans Nov 26, 2007 - 11:18:04 AM
Torch Trivia is back! Ian Hunter here, breaking the wall down. Sorry, no pyro, no lightshow, no theme music. But at least I'm not going to blow it out of proportion like WWE did with the "Jerichode." We're bringing back the trivia on a weekly basis with five questions for you every Monday. So while we're on the subject, let's start off this week focusing on the early career of the returning Y2J, Chris Jericho.
Chris Jericho [artist Grant Gould (c) PWTorch]
1. Many people credit Jericho for his work in the New Japan promotion, especially his classic match for the Super J Cup against Chris Benoit. But few recognize him for his work in Mexico (specifically the EMLL) that helped him gain his experience and made him a name to see in Japan. During his time there he had several high class matches with Último Dragón and even won the NWA Middleweight Championship. So our question to you is what name did Jericho go by in Mexico?
A: Oro
B: Corazón de León
C: Atlantis
D: Mano Negra
E: Relámpago de Asesino
2. Even though he spent less than a year in the promotion, Jericho gained a lot of credibility in ECW. He won the Television Title once, had classic matches against people like Lance Storm and 2 Cold Scorpio, and gained respect from the fans faster than many other names who came through the promotion. In fact, his time spent there is what got him noticed by WCW in the first place. But he probably wouldn't have even made it to ECW without the help of one man vouching for him to Paul Heyman. Who was this?
A: Sabu
B: Terry Funk
C: Lance Storm
D: Mick Foley
E: Rob Van Dam
3. When Jericho was in talks with WCW, he had a set goal in mind of what yearly salary he'd like to make as a performer so he could make a decent living as a wrestler. He originally wanted $100,000 a year. In an interview with the now defunct show "WWE Confidential" about the fall of WCW, Jericho revealed he was offered a much higher salary than $100,000, and took it immediately. Upon reflection he said "I left the meeting thinking ‘did I just screw myself?'" How much was Jericho's original 1996 contract for?
4. One of his funniest moments, and in some respects a highlight of Jericho's time in WCW, was his false-feud with Goldberg. At Fall Brawl '98, Jericho made fun of the company's star by being escorted around the arena by security (who got lost), came out to fireworks (that didn't work right), and won the match against a fake Goldberg (who was two feet too short). He even made fun of Goldberg's undefeated streak by doing this three more times on television and claiming he was 4-0 against Goldberg. But the real matchup between the two never came to be, due to a problem Jericho had with WCW management's plans for the match. Because of this the match never too place, the two didn't wrestle each other until five years later when Goldberg came to WWE. What was the original problem?
A: They wanted Goldberg to squash Jericho in two minutes.
B: They wanted Goldberg to win the Television Championship.
C: They wanted to air the match on Nitro instead of a PPV event.
D: They wanted Jericho to join the NWO at the end of the match.
E: They wanted Jericho to win the World Title only to lose it to Hogan later that night.
5. When Jericho first came to the WWF, management wasn't quite sure what they we're going to do with him other than they wanted him to become Intercontinental Champion within the first six months of his arrival. So in building up to his eventual feud with Chyna (who was fighting with Jeff Jarrett at the time), they had him attack a number of former I.C. champs with the help of his bodyguard Mr. Hughes. In all his attacks, he eventually "brutally injured" one wrestler in a First Blood match, leading to that man's departure from the WWF. Who was this?
A: Ken Shamrock
B: Goldust
C: D-Lo Brown
D: Val Venis
E: Road Dogg
