THE HOT NEWS MEMO: WWE's new social media rules for Twitter, Facebook, MySpace effective immediately (satire) Sep 27, 2009 - 7:50:15 PM
PWTorch.com obtained the following Hot News memo sent out to WWE talent via the P.R. department at WWE HQ.
From: WWE executive staff
To: WWE talent, staff, personnel
CC: Vince McMahon, Linda McMahon's campaign manager
Date: Sun, Sep 27, 2009 at 5:05 PM
Subject: Social Media policy
In light of the NBA planning to enforce "minimal" social media guidelines and restrictions, we at World Wrestling Entertainment would like to provide WWE talent, staff, and personnel with proper guidelines to use social media in a safe and friendly environment to connect with the WWE Universe.
(1) Do not Drink and Tweet. Thank you letters may be referred to WWE talent Chris Jericho and Chavo Guerrero.
(2) Do not post pictures of drinking activity. We promote a family-friendly, family-oriented band of sports entertainment aimed towards kids who gobble up John Cena t-shirts. We will not tolerate negative publicity while Linda McMahon is dropping $30 million on a Senate ad campaign.
(3) Do not post pictures of yourself mingling with common individuals. WWE superstars are to be larger than life. Associating with commoners reduces your marketability and hurts the wellness (no pun intended) of the company.
(4) Do not post pictures of yourself in compromising positions that could bring undue negative press on WWE.
(5) Do not acknowledge other wrestling promotions. WWE is the only existing sports entertainment promotion.
(6) Do not acknowledge "wrestling media" with "direct messages," "Re-Tweets," responding to Tweets, or linking to URLs of website news stories. WWE.com is the only website that covers sports entertainment.
(7) Do plug WWE merchandise. It will not increase your monthly royalty check, but we're in this together to contribute to the overall wellness (no pun intended) of the company.
(8) Do post pictures of yourself with RAW celebrity guest hosts to draw mainstream attention, but do not draw attention to being a "fan" of the particular host. We do not want to convey to the general public that our superstars are marks.
(9) Do not defend or discuss WWE storylines. Thank you letters may be referred to Chavo Guerrero.
(10) Most importantly, have fun interacting with the WWE Universe!
