TORCH MONTHLY AWARD VOTING: Results for Best/Worst in pro wrestling for July - John Morrison and C.M. Punk dominate

PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO BOOKMARK US & VISIT US DAILY

We've tallied up the totals from the best and worst in pro wrestling during the month of July 2009 in ten monthly categories.

We'll track these throughout the year and keep a running tally to look back in December to see whether the stars at the beginning of the year are still the stars at the end of the year.

PunkCMArt_130GG_7.jpg
MVP of the Month
(1) C.M. Punk (53 percent)

(2) Chris Jericho (15 percent)
(3) Jeff Hardy (12 percent)
(4) John Morrison (8 percent)
(5) Kurt Angle (5 percent)
Punk won MVP of the Month for the second straight month. This time, his percentage of votes was 53 percent compared to 43 percent last month. Chris Jericho came in second place again, this time with 15 percent of the vote compared to 32 percent in June.

Best Wrestler of the Month
(1) John Morrison (56 percent)

(2) C.M. Punk (13 percent)
(3) Jeff Hardy (12 percent)
(4) A.J. Styles (7 percent)
(5) Rey Mysterio (4 percent)
John Morrison finally moved to the top of the Best Wrestler poll, ending Chris Jericho's two month streak. We did not include Jericho in the Best Wrestler poll this month, but I imagine he would have cut into Morrison's majority vote this month.

Best Tag Team of the Month
(1) Chris Jericho & Edge (28 percent)

(2) Beer Money, Inc. (20 percent)
(3) Cryme Tyme (12 percent)
(4) Chris Jericho & Big Show (11 percent)
(5) Hart Dynasty (10 percent)
Chris Jericho & Edge prevented Beer Money from winning for the third straight month, as the two team flip-flopped first and second place despite Edge being out of action for half of the month.

Female Wrestler of the Month
(1) Mickie James (23 percent)

(2) Tara (18 percent)
(3) Melina (11 percent)
(4) Gail Kim (11 percent)
(5) Michelle McCool (9 percent)
Mickie James won the Best Female category for the first time in 2009. She came in second place in May and had two other finishes in fourth place prior to July. Tara moved up from third place in June when she debuted with TNA up to second place this month.

Match of the Month
(1) Jeff Hardy vs. John Morrison - 7/31 Smackdown (48 percent)

(2) Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho IV - 7/10 Smackdown (13 percent)
(3) Jeff Hardy vs. C.M. Punk - Night of Champions PPV (12 percent)
(4) John Morrison vs. C.M. Punk II - 7/17 Smackdown (7 percent)
(5t) Sarita vs. Alissa Flash - 7/16 TNA Impact (5 percent)
(5t) Bryan Danielson vs. Tyler Black - 7/25 ROH TV (5 percent)
Chris Jericho was out of the top matches after dominating May and June. Part of that can be attributed to him being featured more on the Raw brand, which means fewer opportunities to have a stand-out wrestling match. Smackdown has owned the category in 2009, as evidenced by the brand having three TV matches and one PPV match in the Top Four. If the Danielson vs. Black match was seen by more eyeballs, it would have moved up close to the Hardy vs. Punk range to compete for more votes.

Promos of the Month
(1) C.M. Punk's "straight edge" promos on Hardy & Fans (60 percent)

(2) Miz's "I'm Awesome" promos on John Cena (28 percent)
(3) Chris Jericho calls Edge weak after Edge's injury (10 percent)
(4) Chris Jericho's weekly promos on Raw guest hosts (8 percent)
(5) Ted DiBiase, Jr. slaps Ted DiBiase, Sr. (5 percent)
C.M. Punk doubled his percentage for the Best Promos award. Punk won in June with 30 percent for his "I'm not a heel" promos after cashing in the MITB briefcase on Jeff Hardy. This month, Punk grabbed 60 percent for his "straight edge" themed promos.

PPV/TV episode/Event of the Month
(1) 7/31 WWE Smackdown - Hardy vs. Morrison (38 percent)

(2) WWE Night of Champions PPV (24 percent)
(3) 7/27 WWE Raw hosted by Shaq (8 percent)
(4) 7/24 WWE Smackdown - Night of Champions build-up (7 percent)
(5t) 7/26 Dragon Gate USA debut (6 percent)
(5t) 7/25 ROH TV - Danielson vs. Black (6 percent)
Last month, we allowed the entire series of Smackdown episodes during June to win the category. We listed individual episodes this month and the July 31 episode won hands down for the Smackdown brand.

Best Angle/Storyline of the Month
(1) C.M. Punk's "straight-edge" World Title run/feud vs. Hardy (68 percent)

(2) Jeff Jarrett eliminated from TNA picture (12 percent)
(3) Chris Jericho teases new tag partner (5 percent)
(4) Ric Flair vs. Bret Hart public War of Words (4 percent)
Last month, C.M. Punk scored 55 percent of the vote for his program as the "tweener" World champ not falling on one side of the fence or the other. This month, Punk established himself as more of a heel, leading to a resounding 68 percent of the vote for being involved in the Best Storyline of the month.

Rising Star of the Month
(1) John Morrison (67 percent)

(2) Dolph Ziggler (9 percent)
(3) Zack Ryder (6 percent)
(4) Hernandez (5 percent)
(5) Alissa Flash (3 percent)
John Morrison won last month with 44 percent. He had a very, very good month to increase his percentage to 67 percent this month. It was simply Morrison's month to shine.

Crashing Star of the Month
(1) Jeff Jarrett (22 percent)

(2) The Brian Kendrick (19 percent)
(3) The Miz (15 percent)
(4) TNA creative team (13 percent)
(5) Chavo Guerrero (9 percent)
The Miz can send Jeff Jarrett and Brian Kendrick thank you letters for helping his percentage in the Crashing Star category decline...but only by one percent. Miz receive 16 percent in June and 15 percent this month.
