PWTORCH YEAR-END VOTING 12/26: Torch readers submit nominations for TNA Match of the Year Dec 26, 2008 - 1:21:23 PM
TNA designed a template for how to present credible pro wrestling in this era with the remarkable and memorable Samoa Joe vs. Kurt Angle cage match from the Lockdown PPV in April. They quickly threw the template away and burned it somewhere behind the Impact Zone, but Angle vs. Joe was certainly one of the top matches of the year in pro wrestling.
Torch readers, here's your chance to nominate other matches that stood out in your mind or were historically significant and should be included on the year-end polls for readers to vote on.
Submit a pick for TNA match of the year and briefly explain yourself either by emailing pwtorch@gmail.com (recommended for PWTorch App and Mobile users) or adding your response in the "Comment" section below.
Year-End Awards Voting schedule
12/27 - ROH Match of the Year nominations open
12/28 - MVP of 2008 nominations open
12/29 - Wrestler of the Year nominations open
12/30 - Best PPV/Event of the Year nominations open
12/31 - Best Feud of the Year nominations open
1/1 through 1/4 - Readers submit nominations for each category
In my opinion, it's that Kurt Angle vs. AJ Styles at that PPV I can't
remember the name of due to its genericness. If only TNA could do stuff
like that more often, watching the product might not feel more insulting to
my intelligence than watching Teletubbies. Kurt passed the Torch to Styles
there.

I liked Angle vs Joe at Lockdown but imo it wasn't their best match. Imo
Angle vs Styles at Hard Justice was the TNA Match of the year. It was as
good as a last man standing match as you'll ever see.

Angle vs Joe at Lockdown. The match itself was not technically brilliant,
but it wsa very brave to pace it as they did. The build was fantastic, and
they really gave it a big event feel. I wish they did that more often.

I don't buy TNA PPVs, so I haven't seen a good TNA match all year.

I'll be different and pick the World X Cup elimination match from Victory
Road 2008. It's my favorite multi-tag team elimination match I've ever
seen, better than all the great old ECW matches in my opinion. MMGs,
Koslov, and Bucanero all brought their best, but it was Masato Yoshino who
gave the starmaking performance that elevated this one (and in true TNA
fashion, we've haven't seen the guy since).

Match of the year was the Victory Road Ultimate X match.....that was easily
my favorite this year, it was like the TNA of old.

Joe vs. Angle at Lockdown
Both Joe and Angle worked their asses off in that match and slow buildup
really paid off. Not to mention it made Joe look like a star.

Kurt Angle vs. Christian Cage at January's Final Resolution
I thought that was a excellent technical match and it was backed with that
(for once) decent story about Christian's Coalition falling apart and Cage
having to make it on his own. Great match + great story = TNA Match of the
Year

Samoa Joe vs. Kurt Angle (Lockdown)
Match was the culmination of over a years worth of build, told a great
story, was as physical, realistic and violent as any match you will see.
The commentary from Frank Trigg, the involvment of Marcus Davis, the
training videos and the obvious MMA tie in made it unique and fresh.

AJ STYLES/KURT ANGLE (LAST MAN STANDING) - the rules for this match
confused the heck outta me w/them having to get pin falls before the
10-count. Despite that, these two guys gave us the type of match that I
expected from the beginning of this feud. Two moments that stood out:
angle doing the "aj styles flip" from the stage and aj styles talking trash
to angle after the match. This match did more for aj than the entire rest
of the feud.

Kurt Angle vs Samoa Joe Lockdown. One of the few TNA matches that felt like
a big time deal & them trying something new with a part wrestling part MMA
match.
