- WWE's crews got the weekend off to enjoy the very exciting Super Bowl before they do three nights of TV tapings for the next two weeks of TV. Raw is in Austin on Monday night, Smackdown and ECW are in Corpus Christi on Tuesday, then Houston on Wednesday night.
- Adage.com has an article on WWE's contest for girls about to turn 15 to win their own WWE-style quinceañera. Melina and Carlito will appear at the winner's celebration. Article link.

- TNA Notes: The "Global Impact" DVD will be released at the end of the month featuring all of the TNA matches from the Jan. 4 Tokyo Dome show. They'll also have more "documentary" features on the wrestlers in Japan ... TNA has released the Feb. 21 New York City card, featuring a main event of Kurt Angle vs. Christian Cage. Also ont he card is Samoa Joe vs. A.J. Styles, Team 3D vs. Sabin & Shelley, Lethal vs. Dutt, and Kong vs. Gail Kim vs. Ms. Jackie Moore.

- Scanning the newspaper headlines on the UFC fight from last night, a lot of sentiment is that Brock Lesnar was humbled by Frank Mir. "Lesnar brought down to earth" seemed to be a common thread across the board. Brock's pre-fight wrestling heel promos certainly set him up for those headlines in newspapers this morning. ... Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Kurt Angle, and Rena Mero were among the wrestling dignitaries in attendance last night in Vegas.
- Jim Ross posted a new blog last night with some WWE news and pre-UFC fight thoughts on Lesnar's chances. Notes: WWE will begin producing another Ric Flair DVD, while working on the Curt Hennig DVD that is set for release in September. ... Ross recently did voice-overs for a new WWE video game concept produced by THQ. The game is scheduled for release in the fall ... Regarding WrestleMania match rumors, Ross said: "I personally have not heard one concrete thing mentioned regarding any proposed bouts for the March 30 extravaganza in the Citrus Bowl." - The Sunday Paper in Georgia is calling on nostalgia to hopefully save pro wrestling in Georgia if the state athletic commission passes strict regulations for independent promotions and drops WWE's exemption from regulations. Article link.
- The Houston Chronicle has an interesting look at roman numerals in sports, especially tonight's Super Bowl and WWE's back-and-forth on the WrestleMania numerical branding. "WWE's Wrestlemania is 23 going on XXIV in its strange back-and-forth branding, and their fans wouldn't know what a XXIV was if one hit them in the face with a spinning heel kick from the top rope." - Smackdown ratings for last night was a 2.8 overall rating off a 2.7 first hour and 2.9 second hour. The show finished fifth on the night, with the second hour finishing ahead of a Desperate Housewives re-run for fourth.

- With WWE's WrestleMania Axxess Tour in town this weekend, the Toronto Sun has a brief story on Hillbilly Jim's wrestling career, with a few quotes from Jim. Article link.

- Smackdown preview: A big show tonight with Edge & Chavo vs. Rey & Punk as one of the main events. The big singles match is Ric Flair vs. MVP in a Royal Rumble re-match with Flair's career on the line again. ... Tag action: Kane & Undertaker vs. Mark Henry & Big Daddy V. ... An update on Michelle McCool and continuation of the Palumbo-Noble feud.
- WMAZ in Macon, Ga. has a story on the proposed regulations in Georgia for pro wrestling. The next hearings are set for February 12 after the Georgia athletic commission suspended a decision pending further research in December. The article has a brief interview with TNA's booking coordinator, Bill Behrens. He explains his opposition to the spirit of the proposed regulations: "We weren't fighting being somewhat regulated. We recognize their laws that allow regulation. We were objecting regulation that went above the word of the law."
There is also talk of Georgia regulators lifting WWE's exemption from regulation in the state, which WWE has previously said would mean they won't run shows in Georgia. Behrens told WMAZ that WWE has suspended its next scheduled date in Georgia out of protest. Article link.
- Some notes on WWE's TV policy that was emailed to ticket-buyers for the Austin Raw taping on Monday ... "NO VIDEO. This includes the use of cell phones that can be used to capture videos. Non-professional still cameras will be allowed." ... Banner policy: "Signs will be allowed except on the "hard camera" side of the arena floor. No signs displayed can contain offensive language or images. In addition, no sign should contain free advertisements such as e-mail addresses, .com advertising, phone numbers or any other public establishments." ... Doors open at 5:00 p.m.. - MVP will be appearing at Landmark Chevrolet in Houston from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. today to promote the Smackdown/ECW tapings on Wednesday night at Toyota Center.
- Melina, Paul London, and Super Crazy will be appearing at the Fiesta Mart in Austin tonight at 6:00 p.m. to promote the Raw tapings on Monday night.
- Kurt Angle will be making a trip to the U.K. next Thursday, Feb. 7 for an autograph session in London at the Zavvi store in Piccadilly. Angle will be promoting TNA's UK tour in June.

- The Corpus-Christi (Tex.) newspaper has a story on the Smackdown/ECW tapings on Tuesday night. They have a basic in-character interview with MVP to promote ticket sales. Article link.
- The Smackdown/ECW TV tapings in Houston on Wednesday night has been pushed back to a 7:30 p.m. local start time. The taping was originally scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

- WWE, TNA, and ROH have no events this weekend, so all eyes on the Super Bowl. WWE's traveling crews are set for a major two-week international tour after taping TV in Texas this coming week. The wrestlers are being given a weekend reprieve from being on the road before traveling across the globe.

- There is a rumor circulating today that Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair will be booked for WrestleMania, presumably as Flair's last match with Michaels retiring Flair. It's certainly a very real possibility, but plans are not finalized for that match.
- TNA Impact notes: For next week's show, the matches are Christian Cage vs. Judas Mesias, X Division champion Johnny Devine vs. Homicide for the X Division Title, Kaz vs. Black Reign in a mouse trap pole match, A.J. Styles vs. Tiger Mask, Awesome Kong vs. Traci Brooks, and Hoyt & Rave vs. Shark Boy & Curry Man. ... Cornette will also try to sign Samoa Joe again.

- CNN has an article on Hulk Hogan's endorsement of Barack Obama, which Hogan announced on Jimmy Kimmel's show earlier this week. The article compares Flair's endorsement of Mike Huckabee to Hogan's endorsement of Obama. Article link.

- Raw ratings: The Jan. 28 Raw averaged a 3.87 rating with a 4.0 first hour and 3.7 second hour. The average viewership over the two hours was 5.7 million, which was a significant boost from the 4.8 million range for Raw the past several weeks. In the key demographics, Raw was the top-rated cable show among Males 18-49 in the first hour, which kicked off with John Cena's return promo. Overall, the show improved 24 percent with Males 18-49 from last week's pre-Rumble show.
- NWA Showcase TV: The third episode of the "Wrestling Showcase" on Colours TV is currently available to the NWA website. Link to watch streaming episode.
- ROH Notes: Ruckus is out of the hospital after spending a week in the hospital being treated for pneumonia. He's booked for ROH's next series of shows in New York at the end of February ... ROH is doing a storyline that Larry Sweeney has increased the asking price for Daniel Puder, which will result in Puder not appearing on upcoming shows. ROH is cost-cutting to save on travel expenses for wrestlers and talent who aren't major players or involved in significant storylines. ROH Newswire.

- Brock Lesnar notes: WWE's website currently has a banner for Brock Lesnar's debut UFC fight as the background on their homepage. A preview video for Lesnar vs. Mir is displayed prominently next to WWE's top stories. ... Tonight on Impact, Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar will talk more about Lesnar's debut UFC fight and their history against each other in wrestling.
- JBL has formed a new corporation, Layfield Energy, Inc., which issued a press release on his new "energy" drink. "MamaJuana Energy" launches today on the drink's website and will soon be available in retailers. The drink is billed as "an aphrodisiac to increase sexual performance in men." - ECW Notes: After developments on last night's show, a match between The Miz & John Morrison and Tommy Dreamer & Colin Delaney has been signed for the Feb. 5 ECW show. They'll be taping on Tuesday, Feb. 5 in Corpus Christi, Tex. before taping the following week's ECW and Smackdown in Houston on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

- ROH Notes: Joey Matthews (a/k/a Mercury) has been signed for the Feb. 22 and 23 shows in New York. He's booked to face Kevin Steen on the Feb. 23 show in New York City ... ROH's two nationally-released DVDs, "Stars of Honor" and "Bloodstained Honor" are now available for pre-ordering on amazon.com. The official release date is April 1.
- Wall Street Strategies, a stock research firm, comments on their downgrade of THQ's stock and why THQ is not a compelling investment for investors. "The company is essentially failing to diversify its product base in the form of owned intellectual properties, placing heavy dependence on the aging WWE wrestling franchise and risky Disney/Pixar based offerings." - WWE's lead attorney Jerry McDevitt was profiled in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on Monday for his career of legal work, especially representing WWE. McDevitt had this to say about any potential claims from Benoit family's against WWE: "You want money because your son murdered his wife and his child? Are you out of your mind? How dare you. What the hell are you trying to blame anybody for?"
Benoit's family attorney, Cary Icther said: "I think that's the stuff that gives lawyers a bad name. Just because someone has made a claim against your client doesn't make them a villain, and they should not be vilified for doing so." Article link.

- Candice Michelle has a new blog on wwe.com updating her injury status. Candice said she's already been out 14 weeks, when she was only supposed to be out a maximum of 12 weeks. The fracture where her chest muscle attaches to the collarbone still has not healed, and she recently had an MRI that revealed minor contusions in her shoulder and biceps muscles. "The doctor has said it could be a few weeks or a month – but I don’t know what to believe when it comes to time frames," she wrote. "It's very frustrating and mostly disappointing to me." - According to philly.com, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino was called into the ring at Raw on Monday to lead the crowd in the "na na na, good bye" chant. (If you attended Raw on Monday, who was the chant directed toward?) ... The website also notes that a local TV and radio broadcaster Alycia Lane was at Raw on Monday and offered an on-camera position by Vince McMahon, although WWE has not confirmed the validity of the claim. - Jim Ross has a new blog on jrsbarbq.com discussing the news from the Royal Rumble and Raw. On John Cena's surprise appearance, Ross said he didn't see Cena backstage at any point before the show to tip him off. ... On Michael Buffer, Ross said he was not approachable and somewhat aloof, according to what Jerry Lawler told him. ... Regarding the Steve Austin DVD coming out in February, Ross writes that Austin hand-picked all of the material for the DVD. ... On Santino Marella's comment on Raw about Ross erecting a monument in his trousers, Ross writes: "Nice line by the entertaining Santino Marella ... - Political news site TheHill.com has a story on Henry Waxman's recent investigations as part of the House Oversight and Government Reform committee. The article includes a note about WWE registering Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis (Jerry McDevitt's firm) as legal representation in August 2007 "relative to congressional investigation of use of performance enhancing substances in professional wrestling." This was a few days after Mr. Waxman and Tom Davis sent their letter to WWE requesting information on WWE's drug-testing policy. Article link.
- Johnny Fairplay is featured in an article in the Canadian Press on the next season of "Survivor", which has past winners going against fans of the show. Survivor host Jeff Probst had previously said he wanted nothing to do with Fairplay after playing the straight man to Fairplay's "WWE antics." Probst was convinced to bring Fairplay back because he recognized every show needs a villain. According to the article, Probst had a change of heart about Fairplay during the new season and saw Fairplay as "struggling guy" trying to live his life. Survivor article.
- Chyna and Brooke Hogan are rumored for the next season of "Dancing with the Stars". The official line-up will be announced next month. Rumors link.

- TNA management was pleased with last weekend's turn-out in Ohio for the house shows in Troy and Youngstown, continuing what they believe has been "nothing but strong experiences in 2008." Steven Godfrey, TNA's public relations manager, tells the Torch: "It's exciting to start the year with this kind of momentum for our live shows, because we feel like this will create a buzz for our pay per view events in Greenville and Norfolk, as well as more live events slated for the coming months." TNA has a three-night tour of New York in late February, and they will be announcing another series of live shows soon.

- NWA Notes: The schedule for the "Pro Wrestling Showcase" TV tapings in Las Vegas includes: Feb. 10, Mar. 8 and 22, and Apr. 12 and 19. In addition to the upcoming Vegas dates, they will be taping TV on Apr. 6 at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, N.J. This follows an NWA East show on Apr. 4 in Newark, N.J. ... NWA World Hvt. champion Adam Pearce will be defending the NWA Title on Feb. 16 against Damien Wayne in Saluda, Va. ...
- Puerto Rico Notes: In the midst of a controversial situation involving IWA-Puerto Rico and Carlos Colon's WWC, the NWA-affiliated IWA has three shows this weekend with TV tapings on Feb. 1 and 3, and an arena show on Feb. 2. Talent scheduled to appear includes IWA's Unified champion Blitz, NWA Women's champion Awesome Kong, Rey Gonzales, Savio Vega, Miguel Perez, Jr., and IWA tag champions The Naturals (Chase Stevens & Andy Douglas). - TV Notes: The big TV media story today is NBC Universal president Jeff Zucker's speech at a conference in Las Vegas for programming executives. Zucker called for industry-wide changes to broadcast television, and said cable programming makes up 54 percent of NBC Universal's income, while broadcasting revenue from NBC only generates 5 percent.
With the writer's strike affecting NBC's available new programming, Universal sent out a simultaneous press release that they are considering episodes of their popular cable TV shows to be added to the NBC line-up. WWE Raw was included on the list of programs they're considering for NBC. They did not disclose when a decision will be reached. Multichannel News report. Variety report.

- TNA's website has a note that the "Global Impact" DVD documenting TNA's involvement in the Jan. 4 Tokyo Dome show will be released at the end of February or the first week of March.
- For last week's TV cable viewing, USA Network was pushed out of the top three spots by Disney Channel programming. The History Channel had the top-rated ad-supported cable program with "Life After People", leaving the two hours of Raw from Jan. 21 in the 6th and 8th slots. Raw averaged 4.9 million viewers. USA Network's "Monk" finished 5th, with the Democratic Debates on CNN being sandwiched in between Raw at 7th. Top 20 Cable ratings.

- CNNMoney has a press release from NEP Systems, which partnered with WWE to make the transition into HD. Plenty of technical information on the equipment used by NEP in the process. Said NEP chief technology officer George Hoover: "WWE challenged us with creating a mobile production facility ... This is a one of a kind unit that houses the most sophisticated sports telecast equipment out there today and we are proud to launch WWE into a new era of its growth." WWE VP of television operations Mike Grossman said, "This upgrade is the first of many technological advances for our brand in 2008." Press release.
- The Village Voice has a brief review from the Sundance Film Festival on a new documentary that looks at how the 1980s steroids era of Arnold, Stallone, and Hogan affects people's view of domination and power today. - ECW Notes: There will be a fiesta tonight in celebration of Chavo Guerrero winning the ECW Title on last week's show. Team VickiEdge will be on hand to try to keep ECW relevant on Tuesday nights. Unfortunately, no Rocky Romero to do his "azucar" dance as part of the festivities ... Kofi Kingston will have his second TV match.
- Raw Notes: From last night's show, three matches were announced for the No Way Out PPV on Feb. 17: Randy Orton vs. John Cena for the WWE Title, Elimination Chamber #1 contender match with Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Umaga vs. JBL vs. Chris Jericho, and Mr. Kennedy vs. Ric Flair with Flair's career on the line. ... Next week in Austin, WWE will tape the final two weeks of Raw TV leading to the PPV.
- Michael Sileck, WWE's chief operating officer, has joined the board of directors at Switch & Data Facilities Co. Press relase.
- Torrie Wilson is interviewed by long-time sports writer Ken Hoffman in today's Houston Chronicle about her new store near Houston, and her current standing with WWE. Torrie said, "I'm on leave from the WWE. My back has some degenerated disks, which are bulging and very painful. I just got a shot with a big, long needle. It's supposed to block the nerves." On taking a break to heal up, Torrie said, "I miss performing. I'm going crazy being away from wrestling. I thought it would be fun and relaxing to get away. You know, seven years is a long time. - WWE Stock: When the market closed today, the price of WWE stock was up 38 cents (2.72 percent) from Friday's trading to close at $14.35 a share. After 30 minutes of after-hours trading this evening, the price dropped to $14.01. During the day, the stock nearly reached a 52-week low, with the price touching $13.76 early this morning.
- The student newspaper at the Univ. of Missouri-St. Louis has a review of the recent WWE: Smackdown vs. Raw video game. Review link.

- Raw notes: WWE has announced two tag matches for Raw tonight. The big one will be Randy Orton & JBL vs. Jeff Hardy & Chris Jericho. Also, Triple H and a surprise partner will face Snitsky & Umaga. ... John Cena will open the show to confront Randy Orton.

- WWE sent out a press release on John Cena returning from injury at the Rumble. They wrote that he was supposed to be out for over a year, but he shocked everyone by returning in the 30th slot. (Cena was cleared from injury ahead of schedule, WWE kept that information under lock and key, and Cena played coy during interviews last week to create the surprise at the Rumble.) In the press release, WWE says Cena will make his choice on Raw tonight of which belt to challenge for at Mania. Press release.

- Jim Ross has a new blog on jrsbarbq.com discussing the Rumble from his broadcast position. Ross predicts Flair's next opponent will be Mr. Kennedy, talks about how a Hardy win would have affected the title picture, and Mike Adamle being thrown in the "live fire" last night. Blog link.
- There were technical issues with the HD feed of the Rumble last night on Dish Network. The audio was reportedly skipping throughout the show, and the Spanish SAP feed would sometimes cut in. (Thanks to Adam Lebow.)

- Royal Rumble/Raw notes: UFC bought advertising outside of Madison Square Garden for last night's Rumble to promote the Lesnar-Mir fight on Saturday. ... Batista was the "iron man" from the Rumble, as he lasted the longest in the match. (He also spent a good amount of time on the floor mid-way through the Rumble.) ... On Raw tonight, there will be a Cena-Orton confrontation, as expected. WWE.com is teasing that Jeff Hardy might be in line for another opportunity against Orton for the WWE Title ... JBL and Jericho will continue their feud. No matches have been confirmed yet.
- ROH Notes: The new ROH tag champions Davey Richards & Rocky Romero will have their first title defense on Feb. 23 in Manhattan. Opponents TBA. ... From the DDT promotion in Japan, Kota Ibushi will debut on April 11 in Boston. His other dates are Apr. 12 in Edison, Apr. 18 in Detroit, and Apr. 19 in Chicago. ... - PWG Notes - last night's show: Davey Richards was scheduled for a tag title defense, but he did not make the show. PWG said he missed his flight. Richards wrestled the previous night at the ROH show in Chicago with Chris Hero, Rocky Romero, and Roderick Strong, who all appeared on the PWG show. ... Joey Ryan & Scott Lost were declared PWG tag champions with Richards not appearing on the show ... Low-Ki retained the PWG Title against El Generico.
- Yahoo Sports has a lengthy interview with Torrie Wilson about her fitness career, new store outside of Houston, and the current state of her WWE career. Regarding her current injuries that have kept her off TV lately, Torrie says, "I just had four big shots in my back for a nerve block. I've got two herniated discs and a bulging disc." On her future, Torrie says, "I'd like to stick with wrestling as long as I can. I don't know how much longer my body can hold out." Interview link (scroll half-way down).
