1 -- CHRIS JERICHO & THE BIG SHOW vs. MVP & MARK HENRY -- Unified Tag Team Title match
Jericho went for a Code Breaker, but Henry blocked it and threw Jericho, who bumped into the ref. Show then KO punched Henry from the ring apron with the ref still knocked down. Jericho crawled over and scored the three count on Henry.
WINNERS: Jericho & Show in 12:00 to retain the Unified Tag Titles.
STAR RATING: *3/4 -- Decent tag match all things considered.
-Josh Matthews interviewed Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase backstage. Cody said, "DX is good; no, I take that back, DX is great." This is right out of how Dusty Rhodes would direct his heels to talk about him back when he was the centerpiece babyface. He said there are variables to finding a man's breaking point. DiBiase said they'll make DX tap out for the first time ever. He said their best is behind them, whereas Legacy is the future of WWE.
2 -- KOFI KINGSTON vs. MIZ -- U.S. Title match
At 7:00 Kofi made a comeback and hit a series of moves and near falls, which the crowd was into the whole way. When he went for the Boom Legdrop, Miz lifted his knees to block it. Miz went for a neckbreaker, but Kofi blocked it and hit the Trouble In Paradise for the win.
WINNER: Kofi in 11:00.
STAR RATING: **3/4 -- Very good match with a nice pace throughout that had the crowd into every move and near fall from the opening minutes. The type of mid-card match that enhances the entire PPV experience.
3 -- DX (Triple H & Shawn Michaels) vs. LEGACY (Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase)
Finish: When Cody applied a figure-four on Michaels, DiBiase applied a Million Dollar Dream on Hunter. Hunter then staggered toward the ring, but Michaels tapped out. Lawler said, "Oh my God." It sounded like he was genuinely surprised. Cole said it's easily the biggest victory of Legacy's career. Lawler said that's an understatement and it's a huge win for them.
WINNERS: DiBiase & Rhodes in 23:00.
STAR RATING: ***3/4 -- A memorable, newsworthy finish. A few spots weren't convincing, but there was also a lot to like about the pace and intensity and creativity.
-A commercial hyped the "Hell in a Cell" PPV scheduled for Oct. 4.
4 -- KANE vs. THE GREAT KHALI - Singapore Cane Match
Khali gave Kane an overhead chop, then checked on Ranjin Singh. Kane hit Khali with a cane and then choked him from behind. Singh rolled out of the ring. Kane then chokeslammed Khali for the win.
WINNER: Kane in 6:00.
STAR RATING: 1/4* -- Pretty lousy, but they did the most they could to try to make it watchable given their limitations, especially those of Khali.
-Eve interviewed C.M. Punk backstage. He said nobody gave him a chance against the "spooky Undertaker." He then talked about Jeff Hardy proving him right, a surprising acknowledgement of the weekend headlines that Hardy was arrested. He said those who live a clean lifestyle are rewarded. He said he wasn't scared of Undertaker's magic. The lights flickered. Punk and Eve appeared spooked. The camera panned over to Jimmy Wang Yang who had his hand on the light switch. He told Punk that was way too early, then wished him luck. A shaken Punk shook Wang's hand, but then headbutted him and attacked him.
5 -- CHRISTIAN vs. WILLIAM REGAL
Vladimir Kozlov and Ezekiel Jackson accompanied Regal, but then it was announced that ECW G.M. Tiffany banned them from ringside. Christian began with his obligatory side headlock a minute into the match. At 5:00 Regal controlled Christian with some chain wrestling. When Christian made a comeback and regained control, Striker said a distraction by Jackson and Kozlov might have come in handy at this point for Regal. At 8:00 Regal hit the Regalplex, which looked nasty, for a near fall. Striker said that move is rarely seen because of the damage it does to both competitors. Christian came back with a flying forearm and elbow. As Striker said Christian's neck could have been broken by the Regalplex, Christian seemed no worse for wear. A minute later Christian went for a top rope move, but Regal moved and then hit a rolling senton for a near fall. Christian tried to sneak in a Kill Switch, but Regal escaped. Christian went for again seconds later and hit it for the win.
WINNER: Christian in 10:00 to retain the ECW Title.
STAR RATING: **1/2 -- Good match.
-Justin Roberts introduced Pat Patterson, a Montreal native. They showed some fans in the crowd bowing. The crowd cheered whatever he told them in French. After saying he is proud to be known as the first Intercontinental Champion, he was about to introduce someone, but then Dolph Ziggler interrupted. Ross said that's not likely who Patterson was about to introduce. He told Dolph he wouldn't believe who asked about him in Montreal last night. "No one!" he then revealed to laughter. Patterson said he was just having fun with him. Patterson said if Dolph is lucky, some day he might become the IC Champion. He wished him luck.
As Patterson began to leave the ring, Ziggler tapped him on the shoulder and insulted him for a couple minutes and said he's a waste of time since nobody remembers him. The crowd began to chant, "Shut the f--- up!" He asked Pat if he was the first IC Champ back in the 1800s. He asked if his opponent was Abraham Lincoln. It's more a case of Ziggler stealing Abraham Washington's joke book. He tapped the mic and asked, "Is this on?" He said he wasn't talking about the mic, he was talking about his hearing aid. He then shoved Pat in the shoulder and said he's a great guy. He pushed him in the chest and said, "You're a hell of a guy." The crowd began the "What?" routine. He then called Pat a coward. He kicked him in the gut. Ross called Ziggler a coward for that "cowardly act." Ziggler was ready to kick him when John Morrison charged to the ring and made the save.
-They went to Cole and Lawler at ringside, who expressed disgust for Ziggler. Then they threw to a video package on Orton vs. John Cena.
6 -- RANDY ORTON vs. JOHN CENA -- I Quit match
Finish: Cena went on a flurry of aggressive offense in his comeback. He dragged him into the ring, back suplexed Orton, and pounded on him. He set up an Attitude Adjustment, but Orton escaped and hit an RKO. Orton reached for the key in the corner, but Cena held him back and then applied an STF with the chain wrapped around his neck. The ref asked Orton if he quit and he quickly said, "I quit! I quit!"
WINNER: Cena in 20:00 to capture the WWE Title.
STAR RATING: ***1/2 -- Good match. Methodical, but not boring. Intense with a good story told. The familiarity of these two against each other does take away some of the novelty of anything they do at this point.
7 -- C.M. PUNK vs. THE UNDERTAKER -- World Hvt. Title match
Grisham said Punk doesn't look intimidated. Ross said you can't judge a book by its cover. He said Punk is a major underdog in the first major title defense of this reign. When the bell rang, Punk bailed out to ringside briefly. He re-entered and ducked a Taker punch and threw him into the corner and pelted him repeatedly. Taker immediately fired back after taking more than a dozen blows and threw Punk by the throat over the top rope to the floor. Punk looked intimidated. Taker pursued him at ringside. Punk returned to the ring and tried to catch Taker on his way back in. Taker took control right away, though, and punched him in the corner. Taker went on sustained offense. When it spilled to the floor, Punk avoided a running boot. Then he stomped away at Taker near Grisham and Ross. Punk grabbed a chair and jabbed Taker in the gut and then swung at his face. Taker lifted his hands, but sold the impact.
Back in the ring, Punk hit a running kneelift in the corner. Taker came right back with an attack on Punk's arm. When he tried to do his top rope walk, Punk knocked Taker off balance. He set up a superplex. Taker punched out of it and headbutted Punk to the mat. Taker won a slugfest mid-ring during which the crowd cheered each punch. Taker hit a snake eyes, a big boot, and a legdrop. When he set up a chokeslam, Punk caught Taker with a kick to the side of Taker's head. When he moved in on Taker, though, Taker caught him with Hell's Gate. Punk immediately tapped out at 9:00. Taker was awarded the World Hvt. Title and his music played for a minute.
Smackdown G.M. Teddy Long walked out and announced that he regretted to inform everyone that Vickie Guerrero banned the Hell's Gate submission long ago and it hadn't been rescinded. So the match would continue. Any fans headed to the exits headed back to their seats. Taker went for a last Ride, but Punk escaped and applied the Anaconda Vice. The bell instantly rung. Ref Scott Armstrong frantically handed Punk the belt and ran up the aisle with Punk close behind. Punk kissed his belt on the stage as the ref disappeared. Long stood with his arms crossed like a mortician, expressionless. Ross said he didn't see a tap. "This is not passing the old smell test, I can tell ya'." Ross declared definitively: "The Undertaker did no submit."
WINNER: Punk in 9:00 to retain the WWE Hvt. Title.
STAR RATING: *3/4 -- It was good while it lasted, but the finish takes it down a notch. Really, we need to revisit the 1997 Bret Hart Swerve one more time?
