PWTorch Newsletter #77 Cover Story
COVER-DATED: July 12, 1990
HEADLINE: Sting wins NWA World Title
COVER STORY by Wade Keller, PWTorch editor

Baltimore, Md.: Sting defeated Ric Flair to become the NWA World Hvt. champion. At the 16:00 mark of Baltimore's "Great American Bash" on July 7, Sting rolled up Flair for a three count as he attempted a figure-four leglock.

The match took its toll on Sting, whose black and blue chest was brutally chopped throughout the match.

There was a feeling of a new era beginning, similar to when Ultimate Warrior beat Hulk Hogan earlier this year at WrestleMania. Sting said in a post-match interview that Flair was the greatest of all-time and that he had big shoes to fill.

Ironically, both current World Champions in the NWA and WWF teamed together as "The Blade Runners." Sting was "Flash" and Ultimate Warrior was "Rock." Criticized then as having no wrestling ability and getting by on muscle alone did not stop them. Sting now has lost weight and learned to wrestle well, while Warrior has bulked up...and almost learned to wrestle well.

The NWA plans a major rally around Sting. Sting will be given center-stage in the NWA and promoted as the star of the promotion, a la Hulk Hogan in the mid-'80s.

Keller's Below The Bottom Line Analysis
Sting: Strengths & Weaknesses

Never again in his life will Steve "Sting" Borden be judged like he will be over the next several months. Along with the NWA World Title - one of the two of the most meaningful wrestling titles on this continent - comes the evaluation from fans, promoters, and writers.

It is impossible to accurately predict how successful his reign will be from a financial standpoint for the NWA. There are many variables that work into his reign. One of which is how the NWA promotes Sting. Another is the quality of opposition he has and how well they are promoted. Another is the intangibles: How will the fans react to Sting?

One analysis that can be done the week after he won the NWA World Title is a brief analysis of Sting's strengths and weaknesses:

STRENGTH: In-ring charisma. Sting may well have more natural charisma and ability to communicate with the fans in the ring than any other wrestler besides Hulk Hogan. Sting has shown potential to surpass Hogan in this category, if given time.

WEAKNESS: Interviews. This is a category that he can easily improve on. But guidance will be needed. The pre-Bash interview on syndicated shows where Sting and Lex Luger had a three-minute interview where neither man knew what to say at the halfway point showed how far the NWA has to go in preparing wrestlers for interviews.
