NWA-TNA PPV
OCTOBER 22, 2003
LIVE FROM NASHVILLE, TENN.
-The show opened with a screen shot of Stu Hart and then of Road Warrior Hawk acknowledging their deaths. Clips aired from the Jeff Jarrett-Hulk Hogan-Jimmy Hart attack followed by clips from last week's show. Then the opening montage aired and Mike Tenay and Don West introduced the show.
1 -- SONNY SIAKI (w/Trinity) & EKMO & LEGEND vs. 3 LIVE KREW (Konnan & B.G. James & Ron "The Truth" Killings)
Tenay said with Vince Russo on the shelf, he wondered if Siaki, Legend, and Ekmo had lost direction. He wondered who was going to take a leadership role for the troops. At 6:00 Trinity mistakenly hit Siaki with a top rope dropkick after James moved out of the way. James followed with a pump handle slam for the win.
WINNERS: Siaki & Ekmo & Legend at 6:15.
STAR RATING: 1/2* -- Some decent action, but a number of moves that showed light, had bad timing, or had premature bumps.
-Tenay said he'd have a special guest tonight to address rumors regarding Hulk Hogan, Bound for Glory, and Jeff Jarrett.
-Scott Hudson interviewed Jeff Jarrett backstage. Dusty Rhodes approached and said he'd be watching Jarrett's back. Jarrett said he is going to be watching Dusty, too. Dusty confronted Jarrett about calling him a "self-serving son of a bitch." He said he takes one to know one.
2 -- KID KASH vs. SONJAY DUTT
West said it's rare when a wrestler premiers one week in a tag match and is wrestling a singles match the next week, but Dutt was so impressive here he is. Dutt showed good fire early on, working the crowd. He hit Kash with some offense, sending Kash to the floor in retreat. He springboarded off the top rope and landed on Kid (barely) at ringside. West acknowledged that it didn't land with the force Dutt would have liked. Kash took over offense at 2:30 and applied a upside down surfboard. Kash came off the top rope and drove Dutt's head into the mat piledriver brainbuster style for the three count. West said he was trying to end his career and it was disrespectful.
WINNER: Kash at 4:42.
STAR RATING: *1/4 -- Really short, but it had some good spots. Better than the match between Dutt and Carly Colon on Monday's MLW show which was full of sloppy moves and bad timing, but this match didn't give Dutt much of a chance to really showcase what makes him special.
-After the match Abyss came to the ring. Kash fled, so Abyss actually gave Dutt a black hole slam. West and Tenay said Abyss is out for himself and no one else.
-Hudson interviewed Siaki, Legend, Ekmo, and Trinity. Siaki said A.J. Styles wouldn't even let them into his locker room. He said, though, that it's in their best interest that he remain NWA Champion.
3 -- SIMON DIAMOND & JOHNNY SWINGER (w/Glenn Gilberti, David Young) vs. DANNY DORING & ROADKILL
West and Tenay played up that Gilberti is claiming he isn't going to be a stereotypical '80s wrestling manager. When I first started watching wrestling, that would have been the equivalent of an angle where someone claimed they weren't a typical '60s wrestling manager. I wouldn't have had a clue what they were talking about. Roadkill got a hot-tag at 4:30 and threw his terribly looking softy clotheslines on both Swinger and Diamond. I mean, those are just horrible looking clotheslines, like one-third speed practice clotheslines during a light workout session. Roadkill springboarded off the top rope and nailed both Swinger and Diamond with each arm in a move that looked better. Doring leaped off of Roadkills back and launched onto Gilberti and Young at ringside. Roadkill followed with a big splash toward Diamond, but he moved. Swinger then gave Roadkill his Problem Solver finisher for the win.
WINNERS: Diamond & Swinger at 6:50 to retain the titles.
STAR RATING: * -- Just there.
-Another "Paid Announcement" aired with Shane Douglas. I know nobody will believe this, but Douglas opened the interview with use of the term "shoot" in one of his first sentences. He shook an arm of somebody who he said could be the next Franchise while surrounded by boobs in his face. West wondered who Shane was talking to. Tenay said Douglas would announce his new Franchise next week.
4 -- MICHAEL SHANE vs. CHRIS SABIN vs. CHRISTOPHER DANIELS
They showed Douglas scouting the match with a clipboard in hand in the rafters. Well paced opening minutes with various good exchanges without any real theme or dominant participant. Sabin and Shane suplexed Daniels off the second rope at 6:45. Daniels dove over the top rope onto Shane at 8:30. Sabin nailed Daniels with the Cradle Shock finisher for an apparent pin, but Shane yanked the ref out before he counted to three, saving the title. Sabin caught a Shane superkick attempt and went for a roll-up. Sabin came off the ropes with a flying DDT for a near fall, but Shane put his foot on the bottom rope. Shane shoved Sabin into the ref, then used that distracted to superkick Sabin in the face for the win.
WINNER: Shane at 10:15 to retain the X Title.
STAR RATING: **1/2 -- Good stuff, but as much as the three-way element added to the action, it kept the match from telling much of a story.
-Hudson interviewed James Mitchell and Slash. Mitchell, of course, talked about Raven. He said many believe Hell is divided into nine levels and the lowest level is for those who turn on their friends. Mitchell closed by saying he holds the key to Raven's soul.
-Mike Tenay stood center-ring and said he would address rumors regarding Hulk Hogan and Jeff Jarrett. There was no pop when Hogan's name was mentioned. Tenay introduced Jimmy Hart, saying he was a longtime manager of everyone from Honky Tonk Man to the Hart Foundation to Hulk Hogan. Hart came out to Hogan's "American Made" song (which Hogan and Hart retained the rights to even though it was produced during Hogan's WCW stay). Hart pointed out some fans in the crowd wearing Hulk Hogan shirts. He said when he arrived at the airport there were Hulkamaniacs there asking if Hogan was going to be part of TNA.
Hart said he and Hulk have been watching TNA the last few months and they believe they have some of the best young names in wrestling. Hart said that impressed Hogan. He said Hogan and his attorney Henry Holmes have been talking with TNA. Tenay asked Hart if Hogan has signed with TNA. Hart said he has signed with TNA. That got a rise out of the crowd. Tenay repeated: "That's what we wanted to hear! Hulk Hogan has signed with TNA!"
Hart then commented on Jarrett. Hart said Jarrett hurt Hogan's knee and he is having an operation on his knee. Hart said as a result, "Bound for Glory" has been rescheduled, but when Hogan is better, he'll go after Jarrett. The problem with this explanation is that Bound for Glory was announced a week before Jarrett attacked Hogan, so from a storyline standpoint, the Nov. 30 PPV wasn't created only due to Hogan. Hart talked about Jeff's WCW Title reign and referenced that night in Florida where Jarrett laid down for Hogan at the Bash PPV. He asked Jarrett to come out and face him and explain why he did what he did.
Jarrett's music then played. Jarrett told Hart to never bring up that incident. Hart started a "Why, Why, Why" chant from the crowd. Jarrett entered the ring and told Hart to fly to Tampa and tell Hogan... then Jarrett attacked Hart. He punked him, kicked him, and then ripped off his shirt. Jarrett then unwrapped his wrist tape and wrapped it around Hart's arms, tying him to the middle rope. He then whipped Hart with a leather belt. Jarrett insisted Hart say "who the man is." Hart said, "Hulk's the man." A.J. Styles ran out to make the save. Jarrett fled to the back, and Styles followed closely behind. Referees and officials tended to Hart in the ring.
-Hudson backstage interviewed Swinger, Diamond, Gilberti, and Young. After brief comments by Swinger and Diamond, Gilberti told the tag champs as a reward for their win he had a couple Japanese girls from the local spa waiting for them at their hotel rooms. Gilberti gave a pep talk to the AMW's mystery challengers, The Naturals.
5 -- RAVEN vs. SLASH (w/James Mitchell) - Dog Collar Chain match
Slash got a near fall with a Death Valley Driver at 3:00. Raven came back with a Raven Effect DDT for the win. Slash bled pretty heavily during the match. Afterward, Raven attempted to hang Slash, but Mitchell attacked him from behind. Raven put Mitchell in a Cobra Clutch. Vampiro then ran out and kicked Raven from behind. Vamp squared off against Raven, then turned his back to look at the crowd briefly which seemed pretty dumb to do if you're about to fight somebody. Vamp sprayed green mist in Raven's face. Vamp threw a harmless looking clothesline in the corner. Raven avoided a subsequent Stinger Splash in the corner by Vampiro. When Mitchell hit Raven with a cane, Julio Deniro and C.M. Punk ran out for the save and cleared the ring. Raven chewed out Punk and Deniro for not letting him take care of his own business.
WINNER: Raven at 4:00.
STAR RATING: *1/2
-Hudson interviewed Don Callis backstage, with Red Shirted Security behind him, who said he has arranged for the Bound for Glory PPV to be rescheduled. Hudson said he heard from Erik Watts that Roddy Piper would be returning. Callis said Piper is gone. "Nobody wants to watch a degenerate drunk run around in a quilt," Callis said. Callis said if fans want to see D-Lo Brown, they ought to order the new D-Lo bobblehead doll. Callis then brought up Goldy Locks at the end and gave Hudson a strange look.
6 -- AMERICA'S MOST WANTED vs. CHASE STEVENS & ANDY DOUGLAS ("The Naturals")
Stevens used to be part of the Hotshots tag team. Storm had Douglas down after his 8 Second Ride finisher, but Gilberti distracted the ref. Stevens then KO'd Stevens with a chain, but Storm kicked out. Harris then suplexed Stevens, but Gilberti yanked Harris's leg out from under him during the move, so Stevens landed on top of Harris (although it looked more like a brainbuster suplex than anything). Stevens scored the pin as Gilberti held Harris's legs. Erik Watts came out and ordered the match to be restarted. Goldy Locks was with Watts. Stevens hit Harris with a tennis racket, but Storm superkicked Harris. Gilberti and Douglas beat up Storm at ringside. Meanwhile,e Harris nailed Stevens with a top rope crossbody block for the three count.
WINNERS: AMW at 7:30.
STAR RATING: *1/2 -- Good tag action.
-AFter the match Red Shirted Security attacked Watts. Don Harris ran out to make the save, cleaning house of all the heels.
-As West began plugging a new TNA DVD, Raven interrupted and began talking about Dog Collar Matches. He said he is going to take Dog Collar matches to the next level. He came up with a new match called "Dream Blood Gallows of Retribution Match" for his match against Vampiro next week. He said in each corner would be a chain with a dog collar and the winner is the first to put his opponent in a dog collar and hang him over the top rope. "Quote the Raven, nevermore," he concluded.
-Hudson interviewed Styles about his first rematch against the man he beat for the title a few months ago, Jeff Jarrett. Hudson asked Styles why he didn't visit Russo in the hospital over the last week. Styles said he told Russo not to do anything stupid, so his condition isn't his fault. Styles said he is walking in the champion and will leave the champion. Siaki along with Legend and Ekmo confronted Styles and asked him where "his head is at" and then told him they all have his back. Styles told them to keep out of his hair.
7 -- A.J. STYLES vs. JEFF JARRETT - NWA World Hvt. Title match
Tenay said whoever wins the match, the landscape of TNA will be altered. Before the match, Erik Watts and Don Callis came out to watch. Callis watched from the stage, Watts from ringside. They fought at ringside early and at 1:30 Styles clotheslined Jarrett over the security railing into the crowd. Styles then returned to the ring and postured for the crowd. He then leaped over the top rope with a flip dive onto Jarrett into the crowd over the railing. "That's why we call him the phenomenal A.J. Styles and that's how badly he wants to keep the NWA World Title, by risking his body like that," said Tenay. Really cool move. When they returned to the ring, Styles was going to springboard off the top rope, so Jarrett yanked on the top rope just as Styles landed on it, so Styles bumped to the mat hard. Jarrett then took over offense. Tenay and West complimented Jarrett for anticipating Styles's move so well. Jarrett applied a figure-four at 9:30. Siaki came to ringside to try to try to interfere, but Watts cut him off and then Dusty Rhodes elbowed him and escorted him to the back. Jarrett nailed Styles with a chair without the ref seeing and scored a near fall. Styles gave Jarrett a low blow to take back control. He put Jarrett's head over a chair and came off the top rope, but Jarrett moved just in time to avoid the guillotine legdrop. Jarrett then gave Styles a Stroke on the chair in full view of the ref. The ref counted to two before Styles kicked out. Jarrett went to ringside and grabbed the NWA belt. Watts warned him not to use it. Styles rolled up Jeff for a near fall, but Jarrett kicked out. Jarrett then KO'd Styles with the belt for the three count.
WINNER: Jarrett at 12:14 to capture the NWA World Hvt. Title.
STAR RATING; **3/4 -- Nice 12 minute match. If they're going to do a finish like that, they shouldn't have Watts restart a match earlier because someone's foot was under the ropes since Watts was in full view of Jarrett using the belt illegally, yet he did nothing about it. Neither Jarrett nor Styles were defined well as a babyface, which hurt the crowd heat. If they had ten more minutes of satellite time to work with, yet didn't use it and decided to stop the match after just 12 minutes, a length of time the newsstand magazines used to mock Hogan for when his title matches only lasted 10 or 12 minutes.
-Tenay interviewed Jarrett mid-ring. He said there isn't anything anybody can do about it, not Sting, Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper, or Randy Savage. Hart interrupted on the big screen. "Thanks for the wake-up call," he said. He said he just got off the phone with someone he used to manage and he will be back next week and will get his revenge. West wondered who he was talking about.
