In Brief: From Miss Elizabeth to Kelly Kelly, figures of top female wrestlers have often been the most-sought-after wrestling toys on the market.
Several readers have inquired about action figures of WWE Divas. What’s out there? What’s coming out? Which figures are worth the most? Toys of the women of professional wrestling have been available since the mid-1980s, and remain among the most popular figures each time a new series is released.
In 1986, LJN produced a figure of Miss Elizabeth as a part of the WWF Wrestling Superstars line. It was the first female action figure included in a WWF toy line – and would be the last for more than a decade. LJN didn’t produce any more female figures, and Hasbro produced toys during the early 1990s, when there were very few women in prominent roles in the WWF.
Jakks-Pacific offered action figures of Sable and Sunny in 1997, both of which were poorly made, but fairly popular for their time. The Sunny figure was somewhat similar to the male Jakks toys in that it had moving arms and slightly movable legs, but the Sable toy was simply a solid piece of plastic with very little articulation.
As the Jakks WWF toy line evolved in the late 1990s and early 2000s, several more women were included in sets, such as Lita, Jacqueline, Marlena, Chyna, and Ivory. A more articulated figure of Sable was released in a 1998 two-pack with Luna Vachon, which remains a popular but affordable item today.
Jakks switched to what is commonly referred to as the Ruthless Aggression-style of action figures in 2003. These figures – along with the deluxe versions – are the most collected of all Jakks figures today, and toys of several prominent women from the past and present were released by Jakks.
Jakks produced toys of virtually every Diva from the early 2000s until 2009, including Trish Stratus, Stacy Keibler, Natalya, Maria, Stephanie McMahon, Candice Michelle, Kelly Kelly, Ariel, Torrie Wilson, Layla, and Vickie Guerrero. Many of the Divas had multiple figures made; some were released as Internet exclusives (such as Candice and Stacy), while others were sold in two-packs with toys of male wrestlers, such as Vickie (Edge), Layla (Miz), and Kelly (Balls Mahoney).
The WWE Classic Superstars line, which was sold from 2003 to 2009, included many famous females from wrestling’s past. The first figures of the Fabulous Moolah and Mae Young were included in this line, and Jakks also produced an LJN-style Trish Stratus figure. Several figures of Sunny were produced, including a Bodydonnas figure and a limited edition cowgirl from her days with the Smokin’ Gunns. Ringside Collectibles offered an exclusive figure of Sherri Martel, which can still be ordered from their website.
At one point, Jakks even released promotional pictures of a Linda McMahon figure from the infamous McMahon divorce angle in 2001. This figure was never produced, but a very limited number of prototypes made their way onto the secondary market and have commanded hundreds of dollars.
Mattel took over production of WWE figures in 2010, and it didn’t take long for the first Divas figures to hit retail shelves. Mickie James was among the first released, as was Beth Phoenix, who was first sold in a two-pack with Santino Marella.
Since then, Divas figures have been among the most valuable and collectible toys in each release. Many of the current and recent Divas have their own Mattel figures, including Eve, Natalya, Michelle McCool, and Maryse.
A figure of Layla was just released in the last few weeks, and Mattel recently unveiled images of the Bella Twins’s first figures, which will be available in the spring and will include the first toy Divas Championship belt. Kelly Kelly’s figure remains among the most expensive Mattel toys on the secondary market, but interest has waned in recent months; that may have something to do with Mattel announcing that a new Kelly figure will be included in Mattel’s 18th series this spring or summer.
