By Lee Stevens, Torch specialist

Thank you for joining me as we put Smackdown "Under The Microscope." This is not a complete recap of the show. Instead, this is a closer look at Friday night's broadcast.

BFF

John Morrison's choice for a tag team partner was quite credible considering that C.M. Punk is a former champion and he is the only man to ever with the Money in the Bank match two years in a row. His choice was also quite odd if you take a closer look at the history between the two. Jim Ross and Todd Grisham were correct to remark that the two were former adversaries, extended back to before John Morrison was even John Morrison.

Then answering to the name Johnny Nitro, Morrison won the vacant ECW World Championship in a match versus Punk when titleholder Chris Benoit failed to show for his match at the 2007 Vengeance pay-per-view. We would find out later about the tragic circumstances surrounding his absence. As for Morrison and Punk, they would meet again at the Great American Bash, with Morrison retaining his title and a similar result occurred at Summerslam. Punk would finally beat him in September of that year.

Or you can call me John

The announcers reminded us of possible choices if the name John Morrison is too "routine" for you as they called him "The Guru of Greatness" and "The Shaman of Sexy" during his tag match.

Other similar names which are already taken include:

-- The Wizard of Westwood: UCLA Basketball Coach John Wooden
-- The Barber of Seville: Popular opera, perhaps best known for the musical excerpt repeating the word "Figaro"
-- The King of Queens: TV show which ended its run in 2007, so perhaps the nickname is available, but it probably doesn't have the effectiveness of his other current pseudonyms. Although it could provide a unique counter to Triple H's use of "King of Kings." Perhaps not.

Although he dubbed himself "The Guru of Greatness," moviegoers experienced "The Guru" with a far less glowing description. "The Love Guru," starring Mike Myers, opened to poor reviews and thus far has recouped only $40 million dollars of its $60 million dollar budget. The movie received the most nominations for the 29th Golden Raspberry Awards and won three including Worst Picture and Worst Actor.

Ironically, "The Love Guru" featured actor Ben Kingsley who was born on December 31, the same date as actor Val Kilmer, who famously portrayed John Morrison in the movie "The Doors." Ah, the circle of life.

Shouldn't he be able to break up every pin attempt?

Shelton Benjamin can list a 40-yard dash time of 4.3 seconds on his resume, along with his wrestling honors at the University of Minnesota. As a comparison, Saints Running Back Reggie Bush was clocked at a similar time before he was drafted, as did Lions Wide Receiver Calvin Johnson.

Dance break

Although Chris Jericho was doing his best to be serious as he previewed Judgment Day, he lost me briefly when he was discussing the finality and intensity of the day as he chose the words "The end of the world as we know it," which immediately led to me brutalizing the lyrics to the classic/vintage R.E.M. song. If Judgment Day turns out to be the end of the world as we know it, surprisingly, I feel fine.

Today's Sesame Street is brought to you by the number 9

As Jericho celebrated a potential ninth Intercontinental Championship, Edge quickly countered with nine World Championships. Both are impressive accomplishments and it's a shame The Dudleyz weren't here to join the parade. If you take just their WWF and WWE titles, they have nine Tag Team Titles to their credit.

Congratulations and I'm sorry

While Edge has won the title nine times, he's obviously lost the belt nearly as often. Jeff Hardy quickly pointed out that the Rated-R Superstar doesn't necessarily stand for "retention" as he has been known to drop the title rather quickly. In January 2006, he defeated John Cena for the WWE Championship, but lost the belt to Cena later that month. In November 2008, Edge won the championship again, this time in a Triple Threat Match, perhaps best known for Hardy's absence due to a hotel attack. He would drop the title to Hardy the following month. The next month would bring another title reign, but the month after that brought another loss in The Elimination Chamber.

So, if you're scheduling a title celebration party for him, sooner is better than later.

Hail to the enigma

The sign of the night goes to the Jeff Hardy fan promoting a future career choice. Despite the "Jeff Hardy for President" plea, it's not a realistic option, if only because of his birth certificate. You need to be at least 35 years old to be elected President and Hardy won't turn the proper age until August of 2012.

And if USC is playing, it's even better

During the Divas match, Ross and Grisham correctly noted that this was the third time several of the participants were facing off, with each side gaining a victory. As a result, this would be the "rubber match." I heard the expression before and I know that it occurs under those circumstances, but I had never bothered to find out the reason why.

Although the definition of the phrase is clear, the origin isn't as obvious. Many word historians believe it stemmed from the sport of lawn bowling or "bowls," however nobody can agree why the third and deciding match is called the "rubber match."

Any legitimate ideas on how this phrase entered the sporting lexicon? Leave your comments below.

Double secret probation

Jim Ross isn't a fan of Dolph Ziggler's constant quest to introduce himself to the world. Just before his match with Jimmy Wang Yang, Ziggler was rebuffed in his attempt to shake his opponent's hand and Ross criticized him by asking, "who does he think he is, rush chairman or Zig Ziglar?"

His first reference brings us to one of the great introductions in movie history. In the 1978 film "Animal House," one of the members of the Delta House takes the time to greet just about everyone attending their party and most of them with the same line.

"Eric Stratton, rush chairman, damn glad to meet you." He was often followed by Boon, another member, who confirmed the exchange. "That was Eric Stratton, rush chairman, he was damn glad to meet you."

Stratton was played by Tim Matheson, who more recently directed the film Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia, starring Mr. Kennedy.

As for Zig Ziglar, he is an author and motivational speaker who was actually born Hillary Hinton Ziglar. He was the tenth of 12 children and although I can not confirm, I'm sure he would be glad to meet you too.
