Thank you for joining me as we put WWE Raw "Under The Microscope." This is not a complete recap of the show. Instead, this is a closer look at some of the action, themes, or things you may have missed about the broadcast.
Yeah, well, I was only pretending to be hurt
You may not have liked the explanation, but at The Microscope appreciates any explanation after last week's corporate beatdown. Even the illusion of long-term planning is better than no planning at all.
Although plenty of video was shown of last week's event, IED was not mentioned by name. Fans remembered, as was evident by several signs including "Becky has IED" (sorry Becky) and "KEE & TAM = IED."
For the record:
IAD -- Airport code for Dulles International Airport
IED -- Intermittent Explosive Disorder
IID -- Ignition Interlocking Device
IOD -- Indian Ocean Dipole
IUD -- Intrauterine Device
So, although Randy Orton is in a bad situation with IED, it could be worse. If he had an IUD concern, it would have been a much different opening segment.
I know you
After the backstage bumrush of the McMahon kids, it was good to see Dean Malenko restore law and order to the hallway. Also, we had a quick glimpse of Mike Rotunda trying to break up the fracas. Rotunda isn't just another road agent for the WWE, as Irwin R. Schyster, he often teamed up with Ted DiBiase as "Money, Inc." I don't know if this means he would have been more likely or less likely to help DiBiase Jr. with The Legacy's treatment of legends.
Dancing Monkey On A Pole Match
With Orton's match against Shane McMahon booked for No Way Out, it continues McMahon's trend of gimmick matches. Although not every Shane-O match-o has been loaded with a stipulation, he has competed in a Street Fight against Eric Bischoff, another Street Fight with Kurt Angle, and a Last Man Standing match versus the Big Show. He also faced off against Test in a "Love Her or Leave Her" match. By the way, he loved her. At least for a short time.
McMahon is known for his high-risk stunts and one of his more famous ones happened in a Hardcore Match against Steve Blackman, when he feel 40 feet through the stage. McMahon also jumped from the top of the scaffolding in his match against the Big Show and his match against Angle featured several wince-worthy moments. Angle thought he cracked his tailbone after a suplex on the floor and McMahon fell head first on the floor after being suplexed into, but not through, the plate glass set. The glass didn't break on the first attempt, but Angle was kind enough to try again.
Nothing says wrestling like Susan St. James
Thumbs up to another fantastic look back at WrestleManias, with footage of the second annual event. This is proof once again that Vince McMahon's obsession with celebrities is nothing new. In addition to St. James, Ozzy Osbourne, Ricky Schroeder, Cathy Lee Crosby, and Elvira were just a few of the celebs in attendance at the different WrestleMania sites. Herb and Clara Peller were also part of the festivities. Peller is easily remembered as the "Where's The Beef?!" lady, but Herb is not as easily remembered. Burger King tried to start a trend with a character, named Herb, who would randomly show up at BK's around the country. If you saw him, you would win a prize. Burger King spent more than 40 million dollars on the "Where's Herb?" ad campaign, only to discover that few people cared about who he was or where he was.
WM2 also featured the NFL Battle Royale, featuring William "The Refrigerator" Perry, Russ Francis, Jimbo Covert, and other football players. I remember being impressed by Atlanta Falcons lineman Bill Fralic and looking back, I'm surprised that he didn't pursue it further. Traditional wrestlers also competed in this match, ranging from Dan Spivey and Hillbilly Jim all the way up to Hall of Famer Pedro Morales and should-be Hall of Famer Bruno Sammartino.
Cage
The promo proclaimed that Hulk Hogan defeated King Kong Bundy in the "one and only" cage match in WrestleMania history. I guess it depends on your definition of a cage. Without a doubt, it's the only cage match in WM history using the blue pipes with the large gaps in between which was so popular during the Hogan era. The only other possible claim would be from WM XV, which featured The Undertaker and The Big Boss Man in a Hell in a Cell match.
There has been a Cat Fight, a Blindfold Match, a Loser Must Bow Match, a Dumpster Match, and a Hollywood Backlot Brawl, but those are the only two cage matches in WrestleMania history. If a cell is only a cell, then there was only one. If a cell is a cage, then there were two. If you're Nicholas Cage, then you've never been to WrestleMania, although he did attend a ROH show researching his role of Randy "The Ram" Robinson in "The Wrestler." He later was replaced by Mickey Rourke, who may or not appear at WrestleMania, although likely not in a cage.
Nutty
Jerry Lawler wasn't just picking a random food item when he said that William Regal always looked like he had eaten bad peanut butter. Recently, salmonella was found in peanut butter, causing hundreds of people to be sick and was responsible for several deaths. The recalls associated with the salmonella outbreak are some of the largest in U.S. history.

"John Bradshaw Lardfilled"
In his defense, JBL has lost weight.
"618 Loves 619"
618 is the area code for Illinois, while Rey Mysterio's 619 is for Southern California. If you continue the order, 620 serves Kansas. 420 serves everyone.
Pick three, any three
Of all of the "veteran" wrestlers, Chris Jericho could have chosen, I'm sure it's no coincidence that he called out Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka, and Ric Flair. All are WWE Hall of Fame members and all are still in the good graces of management to make appearances. Flair is the first up next week and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw the other two on the road to WrestleMania. In recent interviews, Mickey Rourke has mentioned those wrestlers as possible influences for his movie role, but I have also read that Greg "The Hammer" Valentine was his main inspiration.
As for Flair's return next week, this will be his first live appearance on Raw since last year. Many may remember his emotional farewell surrounding his retirement, but his last appearance was actually June 23 when he appeared with Vince McMahon during the Million Dollar Mania.
House party
Count me as one of those all in favor of Mike Knox earning a spot in The Elimination Chamber during an untelevised house show. There are certain people who attend live events regardless of whether or not they are televised. There are plenty of others who don't bother simply because they don't feel that they'll miss anything by not going. This is a small example of giving those house shows more meaning. We're coming to your town this weekend and something important could happen. Not only do you want to be there, you need to be there.
Can you use the word in a sentence, please
If you were paying close attention to JBL's promo, you heard our candidates for word of the week.
Quixotic -- Foolishly impractical, especially in the pursuit of ideals Machiavellian -- Synonymous with ruthless politics, deceit and the pursuit of power by any means. Comes from the author of the book, "The Art of War" by Niccolo Machiavelli
What's in a name
I hope you noticed the announcers calling the John Cena vs. Chris Jericho match. His move which starts as a fireman's carry and ends with a slam to the mat is now called "The Attitude Adjuster."
Also, for the second week in a row, he lost control of his match after trying his "You Can't See Me" routine. There is hope for all of us.
Kane makes it happen
RedMachine93 -- Hey, can U B here next Monday?
DEADMAN -- Y?
RedMachine93 -- If U fight RKO, I'm in the chamber.
DEADMAN -- But there's a new Two and a Half Men
RedMachine93 -- TIVO?
DEADMAN -- No. I have Food Network and Gossip Girl
RedMachine93 -- LOL. I love that Blair
DEADMAN -- Me too.
RedMachine93 -- Please? I really enjoy the chamber. Please? Please?
DEADMAN -- Fine. More like the Big Whiny Machine j/k
RedMachine93 -- Sweet! I'll tell Steph
DEADMAN -- BTW you know I almost married her!
RedMachine93 -- Who didn't?! C U on Monday
Perhaps Kane just called him. Either way, it's The Undertaker and Randy Orton, plus a Ric Flair appearance. Yes, February is a ratings period.
