"SUPER ESTRELLAS DE LA LUCHA LIBRE" REVIEW
SEPTEMBER 12, 2015
AIRED ON WAPA AMERICA
REPORT BY JOSE MARRERO (@WRESTLINGFANWR)
-WWC Open.
-The show opened with a quick video package highlighting the two biggest feuds going into WWC’s next big event, Anniversario 2015 at the end of the month, which are Chicano (who AAA fans may remember as El Ilegal and boxing fans may know as Miguel Cotto’s cousin) vs. El Apollo (who TNA fans may remember as one of the original LAX members) and WWC Universal Champion “Mr. 450” Hammett (who NXT fans may have seen on the receiving end of a few squash matches on the last taping) vs. Carlito Carribean Cool.
-Quick promo from Apolo and his wife Havana hyping the Anniversario match against Chicano.
-The first match out of the gate is in progress and Willie Urbina and the Wizard Analyza are on the call. The match is for the WWC Tag Team Championships, as defending champions Ray Gonzalez, Jr. and Mike Mendoza take on challengers La Revolucion. For those who don’t watch WWC regularly, La Revolucion is basically a Shield rip-off consisting of three identically masked members who engage in many three-on-one beat downs. WWC started the faction last spring as a trio that was running interference for Carlito Carribean Cool, but they have since spun off into their own thing. They had a lengthy Tag Title run until losing it to the current champions this past August. As for the champions, Gonzalez, Jr. is basically a rookie to the business, son of Puerto Rican mainstay Ray Gonzalez, and Mike Mendoza is from the old IWA promotion where he competed as Enigma. He is pretty much the worker of the team.
1 - WWC Tag champions RAY GONZALEZ, JR. & MIKE MENDOZA VS. LA REVOLUCION #1 AND LA REVOLUCION #2 (w/Orlando Toledo) -- WWC Tag Title match
The match is already in progress with Gonzalez, Jr. and one of the Revolucion members scrambling to their respective corners to make a tag. Both men get the tag and Mendoza comes in with the house of fire routine until it eventually breaks down into a four-way with everyone. Mendoza gets to showcase his high-flying a bit with splashes both inside and outside the ring.
Gonzalez Jr. then brawls outside of the ring with one of the Revolucion members, who hits Gonzalez with a low blow that was really not sold much at all. Orlando Toledo gets involved tripping up Mendoza, which gets caught by the referee, who spends pretty much the rest of this match arguing with Toledo. This allows Angel Fashion to run in and hit a spear on Mendoza leading to a powerbomb and a pin. New tag champions to start the show.
WINNERS: La Revolucion to capture the WWC Tag Titles. Glad to see them get the belts back. They are not a great tag team, but a big improvement over the previous tag teams as Gonzalez Jr. is much too green for the spot he is put in. I’d like to see Mike Mendoza break away from this team and he probably will go onto feud with Angel Fashion which by WWC standards should be a good Jr. Hvt. match.
-Next, WWC previewed a sit-down interview between Ray Gonzalez, Sr. and Willie Urbina and the litany of plugs for the upcoming Anniversario 2015 show.
[Commercial Break]
-Back from break, Mike Mendoza is shown angrily going to the locker room area and attacking Angel Fashion, who was lying on a bench because I guess that run-in was really hard work. Anyways, he went to town on Fashion until Vanilla Vargas, who is Fashion's valet, came from behind and literally grabbed Mendoza by the testicles, bringing him to his knees. Mendoza sold this a lot better than Gonzalez, Jr. did earlier, as he was rendered so weak by the shot that Vargas was able to hold him down for Fashion to whip him with a belt. After the whipping, the heels left Mendoza on the floor, so I guess that feud is happening.
-Back in the arena, another match is in progress as Willie Urbina condemns Fashion's attack on Mendoza.
2 - CHICKY STARR VS. ORLANDO TOLEDO
The match is in progress. This is basically a manager’s match as Chicky Starr is a bonafide legend in Puerto Rico and Orlando Toledo is the top heel manager in WWC right now. Starr basically beat Toledo from pillar to post in this match, and even did a quasi-Hulk Hogan style comeback with an atomic leg drop at the finish. The finish came when all three members of La Revolucion ran down to ringside and Starr got the heck out of the ring for a disqualification finish.
After the match, Starr went outside the ring and grabbed the microphone and challenged La Revolucion to put their titles on the lines against the Sons of Samoa at the Anniversario Show. Without accepting it or being forced into it, Orlando Toledo and La Revolucion went nuts at ringside, so I guess in WWC if you suggest a match, it gets made automatically.
WINNER: Chicky Starr via Disqualification. This match was really nothing more than a way to set up the tag title match at Anniversario. The Sons of Samoans are Afa Anoa’I, Jr. (WWE fans know him better as Manu from the Legacy) and Lloyd Anoa’I (who has worked under a variety of names) who are obviously both the sons of Afa Anoa’I of Wild Samoan fame. They have never to the best of my knowledge worked as babyfaces in Puerto Rico, but are three-time former WWC World Tag Team Champions.
-Next is a clip from last Wednesday of Ray Gonzalez, Jr. working on rolls when Ray Gonzalez, Sr. strolled into the room. Now bear in mind I really don’t speak Spanish but from what I could tell Sr. asked Jr. about what he planned to do about La Revolucion now that his tag partner is indisposed. Jr. said he was given an opportunity to challenge for the WWC Puerto Rican Championship at Anniversario 2015. Sr. looked as if he was trying to dissuade his son from taking the match (probably cause Ray, Jr. is so damn green that he will look absolutely horrible in a singles match), but Jr. proceeded to tell him how great of an opportunity it was. Sr. wished his son luck and that ended the segment.
-Next is another plug for Chicano, who will be accompanied by his daughter, who they didn’t even bother giving a name other than El Hija de Chicano vs. Apollo for the Anniversario show. Chicano and Apollo then talked about their respective ladies, which made it seem like this might be a mixed tag match instead of a regular one-on-one match since the focus now seems to slowly be on the women involved.
[Commercial Break]
-Next is the sit-down interview with Willie Urbina and Ray Gonzalez, Sr. Urbina asks Gonzalez about his role in the Anniversario 2015 main event where he will be special referee in the match between WWC Universal champion “Mr. 450” Hammett and Carlito Carribean Cool. They mention how Gonzalez was the referee when Hammett won the title and Gonzalez references that when Apollo was the referee for the Hammett vs. Carlito vs. Chicano match when he screwed over Chicano and there was no clean finish. He says how for a match of this magnitude there should be a finish. Urbina brings up his history with Carlito, who joined La Revolucion putting him out of action for months with a back injury. It seems that he and Carlito have been feuding off and on for a decade. Gonzalez once again states his intention to call the match down the middle, then gets hot at Urbina and leaves the interview.
-Wizard Analyza says that after the break there will be a WWC Universal Championship match between the Mighty Ursus and “Mr. 450” Hammett.
[Commercial Break]
3 - WWC Universal Champion "MR. 450" HAMMETT vs. THE MIGHT URSUS (w/Juan Manuel Ortega) -- WWC Universal Title match
The match is already in progress with both men already down. Ursus is on the attack until Hammett rallies back. Hammett hits the worst-looking Canadian Destroyer Piledriver from the second rope (I guess we can call it the Puerto Rican Destroyer). I’m sure it sounded cool in planning but he had no business doing a move like that with a regular-sized wrestler much less Ursus who probably has about 75 pounds on him. The announcers sell it like it’s a devastating maneuver and of course in typical 2015 wrestling fare Ursus kicks out.
Hammett goes up top for the 450 Splash, but Ortega interferes allowing Ursus to get the upper hand. Ursus then goes for the Death Valley Driver and inadvertently knocks down the referee. Ortega tries to hit Hammett with a chair, but hits his own guy instead and Hammett hits the 450 splash for the win.
WINNER: Hammett to retain the Universal Title. I see Hammett as being a guy that has some potential. He is over with the WWC fans and while his appearance is too indy for me he looks to be a guy that WWC is trying to build around as they eventually break away from the Ray Gonzalez, Sr. and Carlito Carribean Cool’s feud at some point.
-Next is a quick promo from Ray Gonzalez, Jr. telling Orlando Toledo that he is challenging for the WWC Puerto Rico Championship. Peter “The Bad” Romance then complained to a bunch of referees about the lack of respect he is getting in WWC and from Tommy Diablo.
[Commercial Break]
-It’s "This week in WWC" with Willie Urbina, who opens up by talking about the Hammett vs. Carlito title match at Anniversario. He puts over Hammett as being a tough champion and they show some highlights of his matches with Chicano for the title including the match where he won the title. This brings us to a Carlito promo. Carlito complains how he has to basically deal with two opponents - not just Hammett, but also the referee, Ray Gonzalez, Sr. Hammett says in a promo that his championship is the most important championship in Puerto Rico (I thought it was the most important championship in the universe?) and says how he will win at Anniversario. I smell a Gonzalez heel turn here.
-Next is a promo from Orlando Toledo telling Chicky Starr how stupid he is for thinking the Sons of Samoa will defeat La Revolucion and how La Revolucion will run the Sons of Samoa out of Puerto Rico. He then goes on to accept the Tag Title challenge and makes the match official for Anniversario 2015.
-The show ends with more of Peter “The Bad” Romance complaining and looking for Tommy Diablo until he finally finds him. After some back and forth, Romance, who I should mention is the heel in this angle, challenges Diablo to a match for the WWC Jr. Heavyweight Championship that Romance himself holds. Diablo accepts and that ends the show this week. Urbina signs of with “We are WWC, we are wrestling."
