Lucha Underground Report
July 22, 2015
Taped in Los Angeles, Calif.
Episode #37 aired on El Rey Network
Report by Joel Dehnel, PWTorch contributor

The show opened with a video package featuring the current winners of the seven medallions - Big Ryck, Texano, Blue Demon, and Chavo Guerrero.

Backstage: Ryck was in Dario's office. Dario said there was a reason he gave Ryck a lot of money his first night. He said he had big plans for him. Dario revealed one of the medallions to Ryck, adding that he would reveal what they do later tonight. Ryck grabbed the medallion out of Dario's hand. Dario told Ryck he has to choose between money and power, but Ryck asked why can't he have both.

Opening credits rolled which brought us to The Temple to begin the show.

Announcers: Matt Striker welcomed the audience to the show. Vampiro recapped last week, then he hyped Lucha Underground Prince Puma speaking tonight.

In-ring: Santos introduced Johnny Mundo for the opening contest. Next out was Texano.

1 – JOHNNY MUNDO vs. TEXANO

They locked up quickly until Mundo pushed Texano into the corner. Texano reversed it, then backed off. Mundo gained leverage and beat Texano in the corner, but Texano hit a dropkick and unleashed on Mundo. Texano slugged Mundo on the mat, then hit a superkick. But, Mundo tripped Texano and pulled him onto the apron for a neckbreaker.

On the outside, Mundo shoved Texano into the barricade then kicked him in the head. Mundo landed a few forearms in the ring followed by a kick to the head. Texano flipped over Mundo and hit some chops then a sunset flip. Texano hit a leg lariat for a nearfall.

Texano went for a powerbomb, but Mundo countered with a leg sweep. Mundo went for End of the World, but Texano rolled out of the way. Texano went for another powerbomb, but The Crew interfered for the disqualification.

WINNER: Texano via DQ at 5:55.

Post-match: The Crew continued to beat on Texano. Alberto then came down and beat down The Crew. Texano grabbed his bull rope and helped Alberto, then The Crew cleared the ring and Alberto and Texano came face to face.

[JD's Reax: I'm lovin' it. Somebody came down to help the babyface when he was out numbered.]

[Break]

Backstage: Hernandez was in Dario's office. Dario said he wants Ultima Lucha to be a masterpiece. He said next week Ultima Lucha will begin so he has something special for Hernandez. Dario explained to Hernandez he would be in a lumberjack match with Drago where the lumberjacks are the fans and they hold leather straps. The match is called the "Believers Backlash."

[JD's Reax: Wow, for some odd reason I really want a Miller Lite.]

In-ring: Santos introduced The Mack already in the ring. Next out was Cage.

2 – THE MACK vs. CAGE

Cage hit a big clothesline and a shoulder block. Cage headbutted Mack back into the corner, but Mack surprised him with a sunset flip for the pin victory.

WINNER: The Mack at 0:43.

Post-match: Both men brawled outside of the ring. Security tried to separate them as they took the fight up the stairs.

Dario came out and said that Ultima Lucha will start next week. He also announced The Mack will face Cage in a Falls Count Anywhere match. He held up his medallion and said he would tell the audience what the medallions mean right now.

[Break]

In-ring: Dario said the seven medallions make up the gift of the gods. He revealed a title belt that allows the holder to face the LU champion whenever he wants. He said he is a promoter and will not allow the holder to just cash it in whenever he wants (much snickering in the crowd). Dario said the match must be approved by him. He said the first titleholder will be determined at Ultima Lucha in a seven-way match. The medallions will be redistributed after the match.

Dario demanded all the medallion holders come to the ring. First out was Jack Evans followed by AeroStar, King Cuerno, Bengala, Sexy Star, and Big Ryck. Dario said each participant must put their medallion onto the belt. Dario said we have a problem, though. Fenix won the first medallion, but since Mil Muertes destroyed him, the medallion is up for grabs tonight in a battle royale. A twist for the ending with the two last participants can only win by pinfall or submission.

Suddenly, Fenix walked out from the crowd to a smirking Dario. The crowd chanted, "Welcome back." Dario told Fenix he is too late, but he can enter the battle royale. He wished him luck.

[Break]

3 -- FENIX vs. MASCARITA SAGRADA vs. SUPER FLY vs. MARTY 'THE MOTH' MARTINEZ vs. KILLSHOT vs. ARGENIS vs. FAMOUS B vs. RICKY MANDEL vs. DELAVAR DAIVARI vs. VINNY MASSARO -- Battle Royal for the last Ancient Aztec Medallion

Everyone began to brawl. Famous B hit a big leg drop, then eliminated Mandel. And, Argenis fell to the floor.

Killshot beat on Vinny. Killshot tried to take out Daivari, then hit a Diamond Cutter on Famous B. He went to the top, but Daivari pushed him out. Daivari also threw out Vinny.

Mascarita sunset-flipped Super Fly eliminating both of them. Marty and Daivari pushed out Famous B, then beat on Fenix. Fenix threw out Daivari. Down to two wrestlers, a referee came into the ring to adminster regular rules.

Marty attempted a few clotheslines on Fenix, then hit a dropkick. Fenix kicked Marty in the head, then leaped onto Marty, but got caught. Marty slammed him, then went for a dive but instead elected to give him the 'up yours' gesture. Fenix came in the ring and hit and armdrag, then a front flip dive to the outside. Marty went for a tilt-a-whirl, but Fenix caught his leg for the win.

WINNER: Fenix at 7:13.

Post-match: Fenix celebrated and put his medallion onto the gift of the gods belt.

[Break]

Announcers: Vampiro hyped Puma speaking for the first time tonight. They ran down the line-up for Ultima Lucha and said on August 5 the show will be a two-hour special.

In-ring: Santos introduced Prince Puma to the ring. Before Puma could speak, Mil Muertes and Catrina came out. Puma dropped his mic and belt, then beckoned Muertes to the ring. The Disciples of Death came out to take out Puma, but Puma beat them all down. He taunted Muertes then dove onto the disciples. Muertes came into the ring and they fought back and forth until Puma hit his 450 splash.

FINAL THOUGHTS: I'm not sure how to feel about the purpose of the medallions being towards participating in a seven-way match. That feels like quite the let down from what we were originally told them being for ultimate power and immortality. Knowing they are for a number one contender's match consisting of seven people feels like a disappointment, but realistically there's not a lot else they can do with the medallions. They sound great in theory to be these magical items, but when it comes down to it this is a wrestling show and it's a stretch to introduce mystical powers. Well, unless you count our returning friend on Sunday, The Undertaker.

SUMMARY RESULTS: (1) Texano defeated Mundo via DQ... (2) The Mack pinned Cage quickly... (3) Fenix recaptured his medallion.
