WWE Main Event Results
June 3, 2014
Cincinnati, Ohio
Aired on WWE Network
Report by James Caldwell, PWTorch assistant editor

Main Event opened with Tom Phillips hyping IC champion Wade Barrett defending against Rob Van Dam tonight. On cue, Barrett's music played to bring out the Intercontinental champion.

In the ring, Barrett surveyed the crowd before noting he successfully defended the title against RVD at Payback on Sunday. Then, on Raw, RVD managed to squeak out a victory over him in a tag match because his "coward" tag partner, Cesaro, walked out on him. He said that in the "twisted minds" of WWE management, this has led to RVD getting another title shot tonight.

Barrett proceeded to run down RVD resting on his laurels and losing brain matter - from getting kicked in the head. Barrett said he repeats his initials over and over just so he can remember who he is. Barrett said he has a vacant expression on his face and is like a zombie.

"I'm afraid I've got some bad news," Barrett said, switching tone. He said when he delivers one final Bullhammer, the only thing left for RVD will be cast on "The Walking Dead." Barrett did a mock zombie voice, then RVD snuck in the ring sans music and chased Barrett out of the ring. The casual Tuesday night Smackdown crowd slowly picked up an "R-V-D" chant before RVD's music played. RVD and Barrett postured back and forth from a distance heading to break.

Tonight: Shield Shattered - a review of Seth Rollins turning on Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns on Raw.

Backstage: Cody Rhodes, in a suit, was shown talking to Goldust about the new tag partner he selected for his brother tonight.

[Break]

Payback Replay: Brie Bella quit before Stephanie McMahon could strip Daniel Bryan of the WWE World Title... Raw Replay: Stephanie announced that Bryan will defend the WWE Title against Kane at Money in the Bank. If he cannot compete, the MITB match will be for the vacant title.

This Monday on Raw: Daniel Bryan will be "live on Raw" to respond to Stephanie.

In-ring: Goldust's music played to bring out Cody Rhodes's brother for another tag team challenge. Kofi Kingston was then introduced as Goldust's tag partner. Suddenly, the Wyatts were in the ring as the opposition.

1 -- GOLDUST & KOFI KINGSTON vs. BRAY WYATT & ERICK ROWAN

The announcers gave the babyfaces an early out that it will be difficult for them to defeat a top tag team on their first night together without developing chemistry yet. Goldust opened the match by walking up to a masked Rowan for a bizarre to bizarre summit. Basic tag work early on before WWE cut to a backstage shot of Cody watching the match intently. Meanwhile, the empty rocking chair normally reserved for Bray Wyatt loomed in the background. On-cue, WWE went to a camera shot of the chair.

Kofi lost control of the match, then Goldust re-entered via tag and snapped off a head scissors on Rowan. A powerslam followed for a two count. Harper provided a distraction, though, allowing Rowan to roundhouse kick Goldust. Heels in control heading to break.

[Break]

Back to match action, Goldust remained on the defensive. Goldust teased a comeback and WWE cut to a shot of Cody selling nervous energy wanting to see his brother make that comeback. Goldust did make the comeback, then crawled across the ring to tag in Kofi. Kofi flew at the Wyatts, then clotheslined Harper to the mat. Kofi followed with the Boom Drop, then juggled imaginary objects to fire himself up for Trouble in Paradise, but Harper smashed him with a bicycle kick to the chest.

Chaos at 9:00. Harper wanted to end Kofi with a German suplex, but Kofi landed on his feet and went to the top turnbuckle for a flying head scissors that knocked Harper to the outside. Kofi followed with a flip-dive that rocked Harper. Back in the ring, Kofi hit a cross-body for a two count when Rowan broke up the pin. More chaos. Bodies flying. Kofi tried a roll-up on Harper, but he escaped. Harper then wound up and smashed Kofi with a discus clothesline as Kofi was going for Trouble in Paradise. Harper covered for the win.

Post-match: Goldust checked on Kofi and shooed Harper away as WWE cut to a backstage shot of a frustrated Cody after his brother lost another tag match with a new partner. After a replay of the action, WWE cut to a shot of Harper and Rowan standing next to the empty rocking chair. Suddenly, the feed cut out Wyatt-style.

WINNERS: Wyatts at 10:10. In just two nights, Harper has really come into his own as a stand-out star temporarily walking out of Bray's shadow. He just has a presence that WWE will eventually tap into in a major way.

Backstage: Renee Young brought in RVD for a promo ahead of his IC Title shot. Van Dam said everyone knows how cool RVD is, and Wade Barrett is clearly mistaking "coolness for weakness." RVD stumbled through his words that you don't measure wins and losses one at a time, but over the length of an entire career, which is why he is completely confident every time he steps into the ring. RVD said if anyone thinks there isn't enough fire behind his laid-back personality, he's got some bad news that the IC Title is going home with him - "R-V-D."

[Break]

Video Review: Batista quit on Raw, then Triple H found a way to fill his spot by getting Seth Rollins to join Evolution.

[Break]

2 -- IC champion WADE BARRETT vs. ROB VAN DAM -- Intercontinental Title match

Ring announcer Tony Chimel handled formal ring introductions before the bell sounded. Barrett took control of the match with an early ringside attack, sending Main Event to a break with RVD on the defensive.

[Break]

Barrett continued to work on Van Dam as the announcers brought up issues also involving Cesaro in this scenario. Barrett then missed with a corner attack, giving RVD an opening. RVD capitalized with Rolling Thunder as Saxton asked how much desire RVD has to become IC champion again. Barrett responded with Winds of Change for a nearfall, then he cut off RVD attempting a desperation Five-Star Frogsplash.

At 10:30, Barrett removed his elbow pad to tease the Bullhammer elbow, but Cesaro suddenly hit the ring. Cesaro attacked Barrett, causing the bell to sound, then Cesaro gripped Barrett for The Neutralizer. One more Neutralizer for RVD as Paul Heyman stood on the entrance ramp nodding in approval. Heyman continued to stand by on the stage, then Cesaro left the ring to join his advocate. "Nicely done," Heyman told his client. Back in the ring, Barrett and RVD recovered from Cesaro's attack, with the focus on Barrett being very upset. Main Event signed off with a final shot of Cesaro and Heyman standing together surveying the damage in the ring.

WINNER: No Decision announced, but presumably Barrett via DQ at 10:36; Barrett retains the IC Title. Fine match before the interference setting up a three-person feud of sorts. Not sure about heel vs. heel being the focal point of the issue, but it keeps RVD in the mix.
