WWE Velocity review
August 2, 2003
Taped on July 29

Hey everyone and thanks for checking out my Velocity review, which I like to think is more entertaining then the show itself. Not this week though! Tonight, we have Spanky vs. Matt Hardy, and Ultimo Dragon vs. Nunzio. This one should be good.

1st Quarter Hour

(1) Matt Hardy (w/Shannon Moore) beat Spanky. The announcers start by recapping Hardy's actions against Zach Gowen, and then put over his fight with Vince at Vengeance. Hardy poses and Spanky locks in a headlock. Hardy slams Spanky into the corner, but he counters with a missile dropkick. Spanky sends Matt to the corner, runs at him, and back flips off. Very impressive. Hardy nails the Side Effect for a two. Hardy distracts the ref and Shannon Moore stuns Spanky across the ropes. Hardy locks in a chin lock. Hardy goes for a mountain bomb but locks Spanky in the air in a choke. Hardy spins Spanky into a neckbreaker. Spanky gets up and hits a flying forearm for two. Spanky sends Matt to the corner and nails an enzuigiri for another two count. Spanky goes up top. Matt blocks him but Spanky shoves him off. Spanky misses a moonsault. Hardy gets up and hits the Twist Of Fate for the win. Very good match. These two both deserve so much more, and hopefully Matt will get some TV time with his feud with Zach.

2nd Quarter

Funaki interviews the Bashams and Shaniqua, who complain about the APA's Bar Room Brawl. The APA walk in and call Shaniqua a man. They tell the Basham's to find a partner and battle them and Funaki later tonight.

Josh and Cat thank everyone for ordering Vengeance.

We see Jamie Noble rolling up Billy Gunn at Vengeance last Sunday, to earn a night with Torrie.

We see the entire angle from Smackdown, ending with Noble and Nidia as well as Gunn and Torrie all in bed together. What pointless segments those were.

Ultimo Dragon is walking to the ring!

(2) Ultimo Dragon beat Nunzio. The announcers hype Rey Mysterio's new shirt as Dragon enters. You know, just because they both wear a mask, it doesn't mean they're the same person. Nunzio chases Dragon around the ring, and inside, he steps on him. Nunzio sends Dragon to the ropes and leapfrogs but Dragon rolls under. Dragon nails some kicks, and then Nunzio gets a takedown. Dragon headstands and hits a headscissors on Nunzio. Dragon nails another kick for a two count. Nunzio runs at Ultimo but falls to the outside. Dragon goes for the Asai Moonsault, but Nunzio pulls him off the apron, sending us to a break. Great match thus far.

3rd Quarter Hour

Back in the ring, Nunzio is working down Dragon with some arm holds and then hits a some shoulder breakers. Dragon escapes and nails a sleeper. Nunzio fights back and hits a sidewalk slam for a two. Nunzio locks in a choke. Nunzio puts Dragon on the top rope and goes for a backdrop. Ultimo blocks and hits a sunset powerbomb! Dragon nails some kicks and then his back flip neckbreaker for the win. Tremendous Velocity match!

We learn that Metallica's St. Anger is the theme of SummerSlam. By the way, that's a great song.

We see a short, but awesome, commercial hyping SummerSlam to the tune of St. Anger.

4th Quarter Hour

We see still shots of Angle winning the WWE title at Vengeance.

We see clips from Smackdown, starting with Lesnar asking Angle for the title shot. Angle teases no, but eventually accepts. Vince comes out and teases that Angle will turn on Lesnar. Vince books Angle/Lesnar vs. two handpicked opponents in the main event.

Later, Brock confronts Vince, and challenges him to a match next week on Smackdown, which Vince accepts.

We see the end of the main event, with Lesnar/Angle taking on A-Train/Big Show. A-Train works down Angle and then Big Show does the same, hitting a big legdrop. Angle eventually fights back and tags in Lesnar, who hits F5's on Show and A-Train. Angle tags himself in and covers Show for the win. Brock then F5's Kurt, for stealing the spotlight.

Vince comes out and says that not only will the match between him and Brock next week be a cage match, but Kurt Angle will be the referee! Well, obviously it's not Kurt turning, but Brock, since they teased it way to much. Should be interesting though.

Graphics hype Lesnar-Vince and Cena-Undertaker for Smackdown.

Still shots of Cena-Undertaker from Vengeance air.

(3) The Bashams Brothers & Sean O'Haire (w/ Shaniqua) beat The APA & Funaki. Match starts with Bradshaw booting down Danny Basham. Funaki tags in and Danny takes him out quickly. Funaki hits a dropkick and both men tag out. Ron Simmons quickly attacks Doug Basham, until Doug hits a Russian leg sweep. O'Haire tags in and lays boots to Simmons. Danny Basham tags in and takes Simmons into the corner. Bradshaw accidentally distracts the ref, while the Bashams double suplex Simmons. Simmons nails a big spinebuster. Funaki and O'Haire tag in. Funaki nails some punches. O'Haire goes for a gorilla press slam, but Funaki reverses it into a reverse DDT. The Bashams and the APA tag in and brawl to the outside. Funaki hits a bulldog for a two count. Funaki goes up top but O'Haire pulls him off with a mountain bomb for the win.

Doron's Digest: Very good edition of Velocity tonight, with Ultimo Dragon and Nunzio taking home best match honors. This was likely Dragon's best televised match since joining WWE. Hardy and Spanky also put on a great performance. All four of those guys deserve to be on Smackdown more often. Well, at least if there not there, you can always find them on Velocity, and at least here they get time! The main event was a fun match, which just seemed meant to get all those guys on the show. All in all, an above average edition of Velocity.

Doron Barbalat enjoyed this week's edition of Velocity more than any other since he started reviewing. He wants to remind Wade Keller that he isn't the only Velocity reviewer that would enjoy a spot in the Lounge, but feels that he hasn't reached that level of status yet. He desperately hopes you enjoyed his review, and pleads that you return next week.
