Taped June 20 in Philadelphia, Pa.
Report by Mike DeRosenroll, Torch ROH specialist
In the studio, Mike Hogwood and Dave Prazak introduced the show and hyped the main event between Tyler Black and Jerry Lynn.
1 – THE BRISCOE BROTHERS (JAY & MARK) vs. KENNY KING & RHETT TITUS (w/Bonnie and Lindsey)
The announcers noted that this was the Briscoes's first match as a team since Mark's return from injury. They built up King & Titus as a tough test for them. In a heelish move, the Briscoes took the early advantage by attacking rather than go for an opening handshake. The Briscoes then proceeded to dominate the opening minutes of the contest, giving them an opportunity to showcase some of their trademark offence. At 4:00, King and Titus gained the advantage when King managed to tag in Titus while Mark's back was turned, allowing Titus to attack Mark from behind. King and Titus then got to look good showcasing some of their offense.
At 8:00, Mark made the hot tag to Jay but, surprisingly, King and Titus regained the advantage at 9:30 when King hit a chin breaker on Jay and tagged out to Titus. At 10:00, Titus hit a great looking super lung blower with the help of some outside interference from King. At 10:30, Mark had to interfere to break up a near fall for King. Jay managed to tag out at 11:00 and Mark cleaned house, leading to the Briscoes hitting the doomsday device on King for the win.
WINNERS: The Briscoe Brothers clean in 12:00. Good tag match, if somewhat formulaic, since all four wrestlers are good workers and displayed nice athleticism. The win re-established the Briscoes as top contenders in the tag team division, while King & Titus were elevated by looking like they could hang with the Briscoes.
After the match, the ROH tag champs the American Wolves came out and began cutting a promo on the Briscoes. Davey Richards said they were going to cripple the Briscoes again. Kevin Steen and El Generico ran out and attacked the American Wolves, interrupting the promo. Steen and Generico threw the Wolves into the ring, where the Briscoes joined in the beat down on the tag champs. Richards and Edwards managed to escape the ring, leaving Steen and Generico in a tense stare down with the Briscoes over the tag belts.
Backstage, Kyle Durden interviewed Nigel McGuinness. Durden asked McGuinness for his prediction on the upcoming main event between Tyler Black and Jerry Lynn. McGuinness ran both competitors down and said both of them needed to keep their eye on the ball tonight.
Highlights aired of Eddie Kingston's backstage attack on Chris Hero a few weeks ago. Prazak said that Kingston has demanded that Hero in the ring tonight.
Eddie Kingston came to the ring with his full ring entrance. However, Shane Hagadorn, Hero's manager, came out instead and said that Kingston had not proven that he deserved to face Hero. Instead, Hagadorn brought out Sal Rinauro, who has been treated as a jobber in his past TV appearances for ROH, to face Kingston.
2 – EDDIE KINGSTON vs. SAL RINAURO
Kingston sucker punched Rinauro before the bell. Once the bell rang, Kingston quickly laid out Rinauro with a spinning back fist.
WINNER: Kingston in about 10 seconds.
Going into the commercial break, Hogwood reminded viewers about the main event between Tyler Black and Jerry Lynn.
[Commercial Break]
A video package aired recapping Tyler Black's series of TV matches against "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson over the past few months.
3 – NIGEL McGUINNESS vs. AARON SCOTT
Scott got no ring entrance, signaling that this would be a squash match. McGuinness looks a lot more cut lately. Perhaps he needed this to catch WWE's eye. McGuinness easily toyed with Scott using chain wrestling, then grounded him and worked over his shoulders and arms with mat holds. The announcers noted that McGuinness's recent arm injuries have led him to rely less on his trademark lariats and more on mat wrestling and submissions. At 3:00, Scott showed some fighting spirit by getting to his feet and hitting some chops and a dropkick. However, McGuinness cut the comeback short with a DDT for the quick win.
WINNER: McGuinness clean in 4:00. Good enhancement match to help get over McGuinness's new submission style.
After the bell, McGuinness applied the London dungeon arm submission to Scott. Prazak said McGuinness was sending a message to the locker room.
Another video package aired, showing highlights of Tyler Black running through Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuinness, then showing highlights of the in-ring promo two weeks ago setting up Black's match against Lynn.
4 – TYLER BLACK vs. JERRY LYNN
Prazak noted during the ring entrances that it was Black who eliminated Lynn from the three-way elimination match in New York City where Lynn lost the belt and Austin Aries won it. Prazak also noted that this was the third time Black was facing a former ROH champion on HDNet, the other two being Danielson and McGuinness. This being a battle of two top babyfaces, it was very even for the first few minutes with Black and Lynn trading the advantage back and forth with a wide variety of holds. Finally, at 4:30, Black managed to ground Lynn with a drop kick and start to beat him down with a series of strikes.
At 7:30, the camera showed McGuinness coming down the ramp way. Black maintained the advantage, fighting off a couple of Lynn comeback attempts and showcasing his great athleticism, until Lynn managed to reverse a suplex attempt into an inverted DDT for a near fall at 9:30. At 10:30, Lynn threw Black over the top rope and to the floor, then went to the top rope and hit Black with a cross body dive to the floor. After some fighting on the outside, Black regained the advantage on the ring apron, threw Lynn back into the ring and hit a springboard lariat for a near fall at 12:30.
At 13:00, Lynn countered a buckle bomb into a head scissors and threw Black into the turnbuckles. Lynn then hit a super bomb for a near fall, and a TKO for another near fall. With Black softened up, Lynn went for his cradle pile driver finish, but Black managed to counter it into a Death Valley driver for a near fall of this own. At 15:30, Black hit a buckle bomb-super kick combination and seemed to have sure pin, but McGuinness put Lynn's foot on the bottom rope. The referee stopped counting when he noticed Lynn's foot on the rope. Black started yelling at McGuinness for interfering, allowing the veteran Lynn to catch him with a roll-up for the win.
WINNER: Lynn in 16:30. Good match with some nice counter-wrestling, but McGuinness coming to ringside made it obvious that the finish would not happen until McGuinness got involved and this made the late string of nearfalls lack believability. The finish renews Black's issue with McGuinness, which will give McGuinness a chance to pass the torch to Black before he goes to WWE.
As the show went off the air, the camera focused on McGuinness backing up the ramp way. McGuinness said: "Keep your eye on the ball, Tyler Black. Keep your eye on the ball. I'm not going to tell you again." Hogwood asked where Black's career would go from here.
