Ring of Honor TV Report
April 11, 2009 - Week 4 on HDNet
Taped 3/1 in Philadelphia , Pa.
After the opening video package, they went back to "previously" from last week's show for Dark City Fight Club's squash match victory, Hero over Necro Butcher, and Bryan Danielson forcing Austin Aries to tap out. This week, the "veteran" Jerry Lynn is on the show.
In-studio: Mike Hogewood can't wait to see ROH champion Jerry Lynn face Brodie Lee. Hogewood said Lynn is now the champion, but this main event was taped before Lynn became champion. Dave Prazak just nodded along.
Inset promo: Kenny Omega gave us a word or two. He said he will be making an impact tonight. Omega went to the cliche-o-meter in an ironic way to say he will show that he belongs on ROH TV. After Omega came to the ring, Austin Aries cut a promo about being The Star, not just a star. Austin Starr...er...Austin Aries came to the ring to face Kenny O.
1 -- AUSTIN ARIES vs. KENNY OMEGA
Omega wanted a pre-match handshake, but Aries just slapped him on the hand. Crowd with a "You tapped out" chant after Aries tapped to Danielson on last week's HDNet show. Match started with some mat-based action that flustered Aries. Crowd with a "You still suck" chant. Crowd much more involved thus far from the second day of ROH TV tapings from March 1. Omega won an exchange off the ropes, then he posed as Aries heeled in the corner. Aries initiated a shoving match, then they had an exchange of holds and counters leading to a stand-off. Excellent start to this one.
Omega whipped Aries to the turnbuckle, then palm-thrusted him over the top rope to the floor. Aries backed off on the outside, then yanked Omega down to the apron when Omega wanted a top rope move. Aries began his attack at 5:00 to work over Kenny's head. Aries followed with the pendulum elbow drop after mocking the crowd. Omega then came back with a kick to the gut and enziguiri kick leading to a Polish hammer combo. Just saw Putski at the Booker T Fanfest during WM weekend. Still in great shape and a great guy to talk to.
In any event, Omega knocked Aries to the floor with a dropkick, then he connected with a running moonsault to knock out both men on the floor. Back in the ring, Omega wanted the electric chair German suplex, but Aries raked the eyes and chucked Omega into the corner turnbuckle. Aries followed with an amazing-looking running dropkick in the corner before blasting Omega with another shot to the head. All to set up the brainbuster that Aries connected with for the pin and the win.
WINNER: Aries in 12:00. Excellent TV match. Nice use of psychology with Aries working the head to set up the big dropkick and brainbuster for the win. Aries is definitely a star for ROH and could be a great heel champion if ROH wants to give him a second ROH Title reign. (***)
Backstage: Kyle Durden was with Jerry Lynn. Lynn is a living legend, etc. Now, how do you feel about ROH on HDNet, Jerry? He said it's exciting to be part of something that's about to explode on TV. Lynn said he's not afraid of facing a big man like Brodie Lee. Problem is Jimmy Jacobs playing mind-games with Lee. Comes down to this: bigger they are, the harder they fall...no wait, DROP.
Inset promo: "Dirty" Ernie Osiris was scratching himself trying to get through a promo, then Prince Nana jumped in the video to take him aside. Osiris then came out panhandling for money. Back to the inset for a scream-and-yell promo from Delirious.
2 -- DELIRIOUS vs. ERNIE OSIRIS
Prazak said no one can understand Delirious, calling him a moron. Bell sounded and Delirious snapped to attention. Delirious ripped away Ernie's dirty shoe and chucked it at him before no-selling some head-first slams into the top turnbuckle. Ernie tried to come back with a top rope move, but Delirious met him with a mid-air headbutt. Delirious followed with never-ending clotheslines and the Panic Attack before going up top. He nailed the Shadows over Hell splash to the back for the win.
WINNER: Delirious in 4:00. Okay match if you could get past the indy-riffic gimmickery in the match. Delirious is fine in his role as a comedy babyface with a slight, uncontrollable mean streak. (*)
Backstage: Kyle Durden was with Brodie Lee and Jimmy Jacobs. Durden tried to stir it up that Jacobs boots everyone who enters the Age of the Fall. Jacobs stole the mic to say everyone loses their commitment because they're afraid. Jacobs built up the dirty, mean trucker named Brodie Lee. He told Lee to decimate Jerry Lynn tonight. Lee did his best impersonation of a big man by shouting toward the camera: "All day, Jerry Lynn, all day!"
[Commercial Break]
Inset promo: Larry Sweeney stood by as Sara Del Rey and Sassy Stephie cut a promo for a women's match. Sweeney tried to ease up next to Sassy, who wanted nothing to do with him. After Sweeney's ladies came out for a women's match, they cut to an inset promo for Daizee Haze and Nevaeh. Daizee said Sara can't put out her fire. And other cliches. Fine.
3 -- SARA DEL REY & SASSY STEPHIE (w/Larry Sweeney) vs. DAIZEE HAZE & NEVAEH
Nevaeh is Heaven spelled backwards. Apparently she's tapping into the same demo that enjoyed Rellik's work in TNA. Sweeney tried to yell at some fans ringside to rile up the crowd before Haze made a comeback for her babyface team. Action broke down at 4:00 with Heaven taking Sara to the floor with a splash. Back in the ring, Haze landed a snap-over neckbreaker on Sassy for the win.
WINNERS: Haze & Heaven spelled backwards in 5:00. Just a chance to get the ladies of ROH on TV. Fine showcase for SHIMMER.
In-ring: Brodie Lee came out first for the main event. Jerry Lynn came out next to a respectful applause from the crowd.
4 -- Real-time ROH champion JERRY LYNN vs. BRODIE LEE
Lynn was not the champion at the time of the taping, so he didn't have the belt. Classic story early on with Lee trying to over-power Lynn, who used his speed to avoid Lee's attacks. Lee, with his super-stretched-out wifebeater tanktop under-shirt, over-powered Lynn in the corner before landing some easy-does-it chops. Brodie continued to dominate Lee before chucking him to the floor at 5:00. Jimmy Jacobs then showed up ringside to offer "moral support." Back in the ring, Lee missed with a big boot and Lynn followed with a dropkick that sent Lee scurrying to the outside. Lynn then flew over the top rope with a flip-dive onto Lee.
Pick it up at 10:00 with Lee back on the offensive back in the ring after he ran up top for a butterfly super-plex from the top turnbuckle. Lynn then walked into a Black Hole Slam for a nearfall. Lee appeared to be going for a figure four, but Lynn surprised Lee with a small package roll-up for the pin and the win. Afterward, Jacobs yelled at Lee for blowing the match.
WINNER: Lynn in 12:00. Decent, by-the-books main event. Lee showed some good athleticism for a big man. Match followed the classic wrestling formula of one guy dominating, then taking a quick loss to make it Even Steven. (**)
Next week: He's big, he's bad, and he's very European. Claudio vs. Brent Albright next week. Send feedback on this article to pwtorch@gmail.com and we'll regularly publish reader feedback in the "Torch Feedback" category on the Main Listing.
