OVW TV review
October 15, 2005
Taped October 12 in Louisville, Ky.
Exclusive report by Killian, PWTorch.com correspondent

Paul Heyman followed up on last week's Bobby Lashley "Goldberg style" match with The Boogeyman (he's comin' to getcha!) with a fast-paced, action packed show this week. In the biggest news of the tapings, it was announced that at the October 26 tapings at the New Davis Arena in Louisville, Matt Cappotelli would finally return from his broken leg to face his former "Thrillseekers" tag team partner Johnny Jeter for the OVW Heavyweight Championship.

The show opened with highlights from last week's Lashley vs Boogeyman match. Ken Doane and Dean Visk attack Lashley afterwards. Brent Albright makes the save and we get a Lashley-Albright handshake to build up to tonight's main event tag team match.

(1) SETH SKYFIRE AND CHET THE JET DEFEATED THE TOLANDS FOR THE OVW SOUTHERN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS, AND THE TOLANDS HANDED THE TITLE BELTS OVER IN A CLASSY GESTURE.

Good, solid action. The Tolands went for the Vegematic, but Seth sat up and tried a roll for a two count. Chet threw Chad Toland out of the ring, set up Tank, and Skyfire came off the top rope with the legdrop; Skyfire and Chet did the Tolands's own finish on them for the belts. After the match, in a display of class, the Tolands handed the title belts over to Skyfire and Chet, and shook their hands. Tank kissed the belt before relinquishing it in a nice touch.

(2) CHRIS CAGE PINNED ARON "THE IDOL" STEVENS BUT THEN GOT HIT WITH THE IDOLIZER ON THE CONCRETE FLOOR.

Stevens came out with Beth and Shelly and did a promo admitting that at a live event this weekend, Cage scored a pinfall over him. But in the process, Cage suffered a neck injury. Idol was great here, and has vastly improved on the mic. Cage came out in a neckbrace, and against doctors orders took the match. Idol beat on Cage's neck, and set him up for the Idolizer, but Cage reversed out of it and scored a pinfall victory. When Cage got his hand raised, Idol attacked him and threw him outside the ring. He then lifted the ring mats and exposed the concrete floor, and hit Cage with the Idolizer on the floor. This looked really sick, because Cage's head bounced off the concrete. Referees came out and chased Idol away. Great angle.

We see Micki James and the medics putting Chris Cage on the stretcher, and then go backstage to see OVW Champ Johnny Jeter talking with Jillian Hall. It seems Jeter is getting nervous about his impending doom - the fact Matt Cappotelli is coming back. Jeter begs Hall for help, citing the fact she got MNM on the cover of Smackdown magazine, she got the Tolands into WWE, she is guiding the career of JBL. But flattery gets you nowhere, and Hall turns down Jeter and walks out. Jeter screams, "oh yeah? Well at least I don't have a big mole on my face!"

(3) C.M. PUNK PINNED ELIJAH BURKE WITH THE UNLIKELY ASSIST FROM DOUG BASHAM, BUT STILL REFUSED TO SHAKE BASHAM'S HAND.

Elijah dominated the match, but Punk held his own. Good back and forth action. Basham came to ringside with Mo Green. Basham said something to Al Snow, but it was not audible on television. Elijah was setting up Punk for the Experience, but Basham hopped up on the ring. Elijah swung, Basham ducked, and then pulled down on Elijah's neck. Elijah snapped backwards, right into Punk, who scored a quick pin. Basham slid into the ring and offered a handshake to Punk. Basham then gave Punk an autographed 8x10. Punk ripped the 8x10 in half and refused the handshake for a second week in a row, and left the ring. Elijah then started punching Basham, since Basham cost him the match. This may read confusing, but it came off great. Lots of different matchups that can come out of this.

Backstage, WWE Dummy Diva Maria recaps the evening, complete with new tag team champions and the Idolizer on the floor to Chris Cage. She then plugs the main event tag team match, but Ken Doane's valet Sosay bumps into Maria and says, "Excuse You!" Sosay says Maria dresses like a tramp. Maria thinks about it for a minute and decides to go after Sosay. But Paul Burchall is there, and stops Maria in the hallway and brings her to knock on Johnny Jeter's door. Burchall offers his services as a bodyguard to Jeter, who is so nervous about Cappotelli, he accepts. Jeter claims he's going to Danny Davis, and he's going to arrange for Burchall to be Cappotelli's first opponent when Cappotelli returns. Jeter skips his merry way out of the dressing room. Burchall turns to Maria, but before he can make a statement, there's a knock at the door. This is one of the all time classic dressing room angles, as the person on the other side won't reveal who it is. Finally, Burchall opens the door, and it's Cappotelli, who attacks Burchall with the crutch, just like Cappotelli attacked Mr Kennedy last week with the crutch, and there's blood flying everywhere. Fantastic angle.

We're promised by Dean Hill and Al Snow that by the end of the night, we'll have confirmation on the return of Matt Cappotelli.

(4) DEUCE SHADE PINNED JAMIE NOBLE BUT REFUSED TO COMMENT ON LAST WEEK'S SITUATION INVOLVING "THE CONMAN" RON CONWAY.

Noble looked great, and carried Deuce to a good match. Deuce won with the Deuces Wild. After the match, Al Snow tried to get Deuce to comment on last week's situation where Rob Conway, the WWE's Conman, came out during Deuce's match, but Deuce said he'd rather not comment.

(5) KEN DOANE AND DEAN VISK DEFEATED BOBBY LASHLEY AND BRENT ALBRIGHT WHEN VISK PINNED LASHLEY TO SET UP A SINGLE'S MATCH.

Doane and Visk were in the ring when Albright came out first. Albright wasted no time and jumped in the ring. Lashley's music hit to a big pop, and Lashley came through the curtain, and realized the fight was on. Visk attacked Lashley at the curtain, but Lashley beat him to the punch. Doane hit an RKO off the apron to the floor on Lashley, knocking him out for a while. Doane and Visk doubleteamed Albright. Lashley came back into the ring and made a big comeback, hitting spears on both Doane and Visk. Kenny Bolin ran in, hit Lashley with the infamous briefcase, but Lashley no sold it and tackled Bolin and started beating the crap out of him. Sosay dove off the top rope, but Lashley caught her and laughed, and then Gorilla Pressed her to the floor, where Visk caught her. Doane attacked Lashley from behind, but Lashley set Doane up for the Dominator. Visk hit a low blow on Lashley, and then a clothesline, and got the upset pinfall. Good brawl. Great comeback by Lashley. Lots of heat on the finish.

Dean Hill announced next week will be Lashley vs. Visk - one on one - and the place popped big. Then Dean announced Cappotelli will officially return to the ring in two weeks, and then Al Snow said, "Remember when Danny Davis said he was going to make Johnny Jeter's life a living nightmare? Well, when Capotelli returns in two weeks, he will face Johnny Jeter for the OVW Heavyweight Title!" People went crazy. Jeter came out and gave the best heel promo of his career to close out the show.

My thoughts are this: This has been building since the middle of the summer. Cappotelli's broken leg was the thing that caused all the plans to be changed. Jeter has been a great heel champion, and the entire promotion has benefited from it. It's all set up now. A great TV episode to set things up. OVW returns to the new Davis Arena, 4400 Sheperdsville Road, Louisville KY this Wed night at 8pm for Lahsley vs Visk and the final buildup to Cappotelli's return vs. Johnny Jeter.
